GREET-ICARIE
Welcome to the First Conference Amadeus on European Enlargement, organized by the Research Group on Emerging & Transition Economies at the University of Marne-la-Vallée on June 13 and 14, 2002.

PRESENTATION :

The enlargement of the European Union (EU) to the Central and Eastern European Countries, seen as an unprecedented challenge in term of scope and diversity, appears to be an historic opportunity. It also constitutes a fertile ground for new researches and debates. Among them, the question of the nature and importance of the shift from local to the national and/or the supra-national level in Europe seems to be important. Such changes in the political area are strongly connected with economic, social and cultural transformations. These deep changes involve new processes, new actors and new practices but also renewed international relations visions.

The revitalization of historical links and the development of economic exchanges with CEECs have lead to a de facto integration in the EU context. The enlargement process will generate important costs for both EU members and CEECs. Legitimately, some questions have to be enounced: Why do CEECs prefer adhesion to partnership? What is the optimal rhythm for the enlargement process? What are the reactions of Western and Eastern public opinion toward this unprecedented process? Responses are economic but also politic, social, cultural and embedded in history.

This conference will offer a multidisciplinary forum for dialogue on issues surrounding these questions. The papers are expected to address the relationship between further "Europeization" and the Eastern Enlargement of the Union, either in the CEECs (in the process or not of accession to the EU), in the CIS countries or within the EU itself. The panel will be organized under four thematic axes :

A. Political:
(A1) democracy and legitimacy;
(A2) security and integration;
(A3) European peripheries;
(A4) Eastern and Western public opinion to enlargement process.

B. Economics:

(B2) growth and convergence; network and regional dynamics

C. Social:
