PhD Studentships – Department of Classics

(School of Humanities, The University of Nottingham)

The Department of Classics is offering two research studentships related to Professor AH Sommerstein’s Leverhulme Trust-funded research project: ‘The Oath in Archaic and Classical Greece’. Each studentship, exclusively for doctoral research related to the archaic and/or classical Greek world and crucially (but not necessarily exclusively) involving the topic of oaths or swearing, will cover the UK/EU level of tuition fees and pay a maintenance grant in line with national guidelines (expected to be around £10,800 in 2004-5), for three years (subject to satisfactory progress).

Those wishing to be considered for a studentship should apply for admission as a research student to the Department of Classics using the standard University application form (available at All applicants intending to pursue eligible research projects (see above) will be considered automatically as candidates for the studentships. Deadline for application is Monday 5 July 2004.

Informal inquiries may be addressed to Professor Alan Sommerstein via email at
