SPECIAL ISSUE OF FRENCH HISTORICAL STUDIES

ON

FRANCE AND ISLAM

The Editors of French Historical Studies are soliciting articles for a
special issue on France and Islam.  Papers on research topics covering
all chronological periods from the medieval to the present are welcome.
The editors would be especially pleased to consider submissions from the
medieval and early modern periods as recent trends have meant that these
periods are not always as well represented as the modern and
post-colonial periods.  The aim is to have a series of articles that
cover the chronological spectrum. We understand "France" in the broadest
way, including the medieval Frankish kingdoms, the Crusaders and
Crusader states, and those people who called themselves "Franks" and
were called by Muslims "Ifranj/Firanj."

The framework of the issue will rest on three considerations, namely:

1.     RELATIONS between France and Islamic countries

2.     ENCOUNTERS AND RESPONSES of France or the French to Islam or of Islamic countries or Muslims to France or the French

3.     INFLUENCES of Islam or Islamic countries on France or on French
communities and French influences on Islamic countries or on Islamic culture

There are no thematic preferences and the editors encourage scholars to
submit any topic they feel would fit into the general framework of the
issue.

Queries regarding potential submissions and all other inquiries should
be addressed to the guest editors, Patricia Lorcin and Paula Sanders
plorcin@umn.edu or sanders@rice.edu.  Articles can be either in English
or in French but should conform to French Historical Studies stylistic
guidelines  (see http://fhs.ucdavis.edu/style.shtml for details).

Manuscripts can be sent electronically to the Managing Assistant of
French Historical Studies, Eteica Spencer at the following e-mail
address: egspencer@ucdavis.edu. Manuscripts can be sent by mail to
Eteica Spencer, French Historical Studies, History Department,
University of California, Davis, Davis CA 95615.

The deadline for submissions is October 1, 2005.
