*  *  *

Published on Friday, January 07, 2011

Abstract

  • la philosophie politique du Parti libéral ;
  • l’électorat et les élus : la composition socio-professionnelle et la géographie politique du parti ;
  • l’organisation du parti au parlement et dans le pays ;
  • les programmes électoraux et  les réformes prônées par le parti libéral ;
  • les mesures et les domaines d’intervention phares des gouvernements libéraux ;
  • les difficultés que rencontre le parti au pouvoir ;
  • les personnalités politiques, intellectuelles, militantes du parti ;
  • la concurrence idéologique et politique.

Comité scientifique :

  • Susan Finding (Poitiers),
  • Trevor Harris (Tours),
  • Tim Whitton (Clermont Ferrand).

The Liberal Party in Britain : past and present

Day Conference organised by MIMMOC  (Poitiers) – GRAAT (Tours),  Friday 18 March 2011,

Venue: MSHS, Bâtiment A5, 5, rue Théodore LEFEBVRE, 86000 POITIERS

Since May 2010 the British Cabinet has once more had Liberal Party members, a party which had been absent from government for eighty-five years. The Liberal Party, majority party in the Commons in 1906, lost that majority in 1910. The government nevertheless remained, at least partly, in Liberal hands until 1924. In the same manner, member of a coalition government in 2010, the Liberal Party was not without influence in previous Cabinets. Does history repeat itself? Questions to be explored are those which explain when and why the Liberal Party lost power, and when and why it regained it. These include :

  • the political philosophy of the Liberal Party,
  • voters and candidates: the socio-professional make-up and geography of the party,
  • party organisation in parliament and in the country,
  • manifestos and reforms put forward by the Liberal Party,
  • specific Liberal Party measures and fields of intervention,
  • difficulties encountered by the party in government,
  • politicians, intellectuals and militants,
  • ideological and political alternatives.

Scientific committee:

  • Susan Finding (Poitiers),
  • Trevor Harris (Tours),
  • Tim Whitton (Clermont Ferrand).

Papers will be published in a forthcoming issue of the online journal Cahiers du MIMMOC in 2011.
