Zusammenfassung

The conference aims to bring together scholars from different disciplinary backgrounds, especially language and communication research, and professional specialities (e.g., healthcare, social care, therapy, law, mediation, management, business, journalism, education). It encourages research and reflection developing interdisciplinarity, methodological diversity, inter-professional collaboration and explores the relations between language use and social practices taking place in institutional and organisational contexts. A special emphasis will be on cross-boundary collaboration and translation of research findings to ensure impact. For this 2014 ALAPP conference, a special attention will be dedicated to the topic of Learning through and for professional practice.

Inserat

After Cardiff in 2011, Sydney in 2012 and Kuala Lumpur in 2013, the University of Geneva will host the 4th International conference on Applied Linguistics and Professional Practice.

Conference theme

For this 2014 ALAPP conference, a special attention will be dedicated to the topic of Learning through and for professional practice. Professional and vocational learning, and the educational and practice-based experiences that support it, are currently the subject of increased interest and attention in the fields of educational, psychological, sociological, and business management research. They are also becoming a priority for governments, employer organisations, professional bodies and unions, who are concerned about developing and sustaining competent workforces and workers to meet important social and economic goals.

Professional and vocational learning is not constructed independently from language use. To some extent, it is deeply shaped by discourse and by the complex range of semiotic means used by participants when engaging in professional practice. For instance, at least to some extent, it is by conducting interaction with experienced workers, by negotiating meaning with these experts, by reshaping participation in the workplace that workers learn to take part in productive tasks and become members of professional communities. From that standpoint, issues related to vocational and professional training can be seen as a particularly relevant and fruitful terrain for exploring inter-professional connectivities between academic expertise in applied linguistics and professional experience.

ALAPP 2014 welcomes contributions on any topic linking professional practice with language and communication issues. The following topics will be of particular interest:

  • Globalization, work and language learning
  • Language and institutional demands in professional contexts
  • Skills and competence development through language and communication
  • Language, communication and workplace learning
  • Linguistic and semiotic aspects of professional expertise
  • Transitions from school and tertiary education to work
  • Vocational learning, communities of practice and identity construction
  • Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) at work and in vocational and professional education
  • Language and reflexivity at work and in vocational and professional education
  • Multimodality in professional practice and vocational learning
  • Language, activity and development

Submission guidelines

Individual papers, posters and thematic symposia can be submitted in English and French through the conference website (http://www.unige.ch/alapp2014)

Submissions will be possible through the online conference management system ConfTool

from November 1st 2013 to January 31st 2014.

To submit a proposal, you should first log on the conference management system and create an account by providing your details and a valid email address. You then get a user name and a password.

Once you are logged into the system, you may submit one or multiple proposal(s), along the three possible formats eligible for the conference.

We recommend that you read instructions below carefully before initiating the submission procedure.

  • Submit an individual paper

Individual papers are oral presentations of 20 minutes, followed by a discussion of 10 minutes. Individual papers will be grouped in sessions including 3 to 4 oral presentations. Individual papers are submitted directly by their author(s). Submissions require the following items:

    • Information about author(s). You may indicate multiple authors and distinguish between presenting and non-presenting authors.
    • The title of contribution.
    • A detailed abstract of 500 words max. Your abstract should explain clearly the topic, the theoretical orientations and empirical field of the proposal.
    • One or multiple conference topics related to the contribution. This will help the reviewing process and the preparation of the conference program.
    • Up to five keywords relevant to the contribution.
  • Submit a poster presentation

Posters are visual presentations of research results. Posters are grouped in interactive sessions involving five or six posters. A short oral presentation of about 5 minutes for each poster is given to an audience gathered as a group. After the authors’ brief presentation, an in-depth discussion between them and the audience follows. Interactive poster sessions are directed by a chairperson who is in charge to lead the session and the discussion. Posters are submitted directly by their author(s).

  • Submit a thematic symposium

Thematic symposia combine 3 thematically related papers, invited and submitted by a convener. Each symposium lasts 120 minutes and includes 3 oral presentations of 20 minutes, followed by a discussion. Thematic symposia are placed under the responsibility of a chairperson and also include a discussant, identified by the convener. Submissions should include the following items:

  • A title and a 500 words abstract related to the symposium proposal. The abstract should explain clearly the topic, the theoretical orientations and empirical fields of the proposal.
  • One or multiple conference topics related to the symposium proposal. This will help the reviewing process and the preparation of the conference program.
  • Up to five keywords relevant to the symposium proposal.
  • Nominate the person who will act as chair for the symposium.
  • Nominate the person who will act as discussant for the symposium.

For each of the three papers included in the symposium, indicate a) the names and details of the author(s), b) the title of the symposium papers, c) a 500 words abstract.

Reviewing procedure

Each complete proposal will be reviewed anonymously by two members of the scientific committee.

Evaluation criteria include quality of the proposals, innovation and relevance to the conference topic. Decisions of acceptance will be communicated to authors by April 30th 2014.

Email address :  alapp2014@unige.ch

The conference will take place in University of Geneva, Switzerland, 10-13 September 2014
