Jason Corburn is an associate professor in the department of city and regional planning and the School of Public Health at the University of California, Berkeley. He directs Berkeley’s Center for Global Healthy Cities (www.healthycities.berkley.edu) and co-­‐directs Global Metropolitan Studies (metrostudies.berkeley.edu/). Professor Corburn also leads Berkeley’s joint MPH-­‐MCP (public health & city planning) joint graduate degree program. In addition to numerous journal publications, Professor Corburn has published three award-winning books. Street Science: Community Knowledge and Environnemental Health Justice (MIT Press 2005) won the 2007 Paul Davidoff Best Book Award from the Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning and was voted in 2009 by the Journal of the American Planning Association as one of the 30 most influential books in the first 100 years of American City Planning.

Corburn’s second book, Toward the Healthy City: People, Places and the Politics of Urban Planning, (The MIT Press, 2009) highlights the histories, disconnects and contemporary attempts to reconnect city planning and public health and analyzes some of the first Health Impact Assessments in the United States. Healthy City Planning: From Neighbourhood to National Health Equity, published by Routledge in 2013, deepens, his intellectual contributions to the theory and practice of integrating social justice, place-­‐based policy and human health. Healthy City Planning highlights Corburn’s on-­‐going collaborative projects in Richmond, California, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and Nairobi, Kenya, all aimed at improving the living conditions and reducing health burdens for the urban poor. Professor Corburn has worked for almost two decades with urban communities of color on health and environmental justice issues.

Corburn currently leads the Richmond Health Equity Partnership in California, which has brought together city and county government, the school district, community based organizations to address chronic health inequities in Richmond, California (www.richmondhealth.org and healthyrichmond.net).

Professor Corburn is currently also a member of the Scientific Advisory Board for the International Council for Science (ICSU)’s Urban Health Research Initiative. He is an advisor to UN-­‐Habitat, the World Health Organization, the US Centers for Disease Control, the California Air Resources Board, and the California Endowment. He has been a visiting lecturer at the University of Nairobi, Kenya, and the State University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He is a recipient of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Health Policy Investigator Award and the RWJF Health and Society Scholars award. Jason was formerly a senior planner with the New York City Department of Environmental Protection. Professor Corburn received a Ph.D. in Urban Environmental Planning and a Masters in City Planning from MIT, and completed a post-­‐doc in epidemiology at Columbia University’s School of Public Health.
