Abstract

The Revista de História of the University of São Paulo (Brazil) invites interested scholars to submit proposals for articles to be published as part of a ‘dossier’ concerning intermediate groups in the Portuguese dominions on the Early Modern Age. Throughout that period, ‘middle people’ strove to assert themselves in rural areas and helped to shape old and new urban centers in the Portuguese World, corresponding to an increased demand for specialized services and ensuring the necessary extensions of royal representation functions and Church activities. Even though almost non-existent in juridical or normative terms, those groups were recognized both by nationals and foreigners as a complex and vibrant intermediate social layer. Time has come to try and distinguish its specificities, trends of formation and effective roles in social dynamics.

Argument

This dossier is expected to gather studies on specific fields, with relatively narrow geographical and chronological focuses, as well as some larger or more comprehensive views, that may eventually draw comparisons with other European or Latin American territories. Some scholars with proven track records have already been invited to contribute, but we strongly encourage other researchers to apply.

Selection process will take particular account of the originality of the approaches and the diversity of academic affiliations.

Submission guidelines

Proposals of no more than five hundred words should be sent to treismiranda@gamil.com and brunofeitler@gmail.com, with a short biographical note,

until October 15th.

If accepted, final articles must be submitted for evaluation until April 15th, complying with the Revista de História’s guidelines for the elaboration and presentation of articles (http://revhistoria.usp.br/index.php/publique).

Proposals (abstracts) will be selected by the organizers of the dossier. The final texts of the whole dossier, once reviewed by the organizers, will be submitted individually to two ad hoc reviewers appointed by the Editorial Board of the Revista de História (double blind evaluation system). If the reviews diverge, the text will be submitted to a third ad hoc reviewer. This procedure will result in the approval or disapproval of the texts, as well as in the request for reformulations responding to the referees’ critics or suggestions.

Publication is due to occur in 2015.
