Postdoc position in the LIMAH (Linking Media in Acceptable Hypergraphs) research program looking at research practices relating to Hypergraphs

Résumé

Available multimedia content is rapidly increasing in scale and diversity, yet today, multimedia data remain mostly unconnected, i.e., with no explicit links between related fragments. LIMAH aims at exploring hypergraph structures for multimedia collections, instantiating actual links between fragments of multimedia documents, where links reflect particular content-based proximity—similar content, thematic proximity, opinion expressed, answer to a question, etc. LIMAH leverages technological aspects and usage aspects from the standpoint of law and human science to apprehend linked media contents globally and develop a long term vision of the domain in addition to scientific and technological contributions.

Foreword

Available multimedia content is rapidly increasing in scale and diversity, yet today, multimedia data remain mostly unconnected, i.e., with no explicit links between related fragments. LIMAH aims at exploring hypergraph structures for multimedia collections, instantiating actual links between fragments of multimedia documents, where links reflect particular content-based proximity—similar content, thematic proximity, opinion expressed, answer to a question, etc. Exploiting and developing further techniques targeting pairwise comparison of multimedia contents, LIMAH addresses two key issues of content-based graph-oriented multimedia collection structuring: How to automatically build from a collection of documents an hypergraph, i.e., graph combining edges of different natures, which provides exploitable links in selected use cases? How collections with explicit links modify usage of multimedia data in all aspects, from a technology point of view as well as from a user point of view? LIMAH leverages technological aspects and usage aspects from the standpoint of law and human science to apprehend linked media contents globally and develop a long term vision of the domain in addition to scientific and technological contributions.

Scope and objectives

Linking multimedia contents refers to the creation of explicit and meaningful links between multimedia documents, or fragments of documents, thus creating linked media in what could be called a Web of Media in analogy with the Web of Data. Note that there are however significant differences between the notion of linked media and that of linked data, the latter organizing knowledge databases by means of links between concepts: Links in linked media do not instantiate knowledge organization but rather reflects proximity, limiting ourselves to content based proximity in LIMAH. Linked media remains a major challenge with numerous potential applications in all areas of multimedia where the strong increase of ubiquitous access to the Internet and the resulting convergence of media on the network open countless opportunities. Typical such applications are digital archives management, media aggregation and sharing sites, connected TV and in particular second screen applications, or online courses.

Outcome

The main outputs of the project are technological advances to organize a multimedia collection with links of different natures, evaluation of such a structuring on media practice along with demonstration platforms on the usecases considered, and a better insight regarding the evolution of media practices and law in light of linked media contents.

Missions et activités principales

Media practices in linked media contexts

The following results are expected from the postdoctorate work:

  1. A stateofthe art and precise analysis of the domain, especially tackling the following questions: What are the users' habits with respect to linked media, to multimedia devices?
  2. What are the economic, societal, anthropological, technological stakes?
  3. A scientific questioning of the assertion that the use of one technology perfectly fits into other infocommunicational and cultural practices;
  4. A deep study of shifts in TV and TV consumption, and their implications on content production.

In order to tackle these questions, the following methodology will be adopted:

  1. Focus on what is emerging: new objects, new uses;
  2. Describe uses building a methodological apparatus able to deal with the heterogeneity of traces, to distinguish between actual practices and reported ones, and to detect the strategies of the dominant actors, focusing on the way users explore links between contents;
  3. Go beyond sociological analyzes to understand the emergence of new practices in audiovisual productions and in the individual and collective uses of these technologies;
  4. Go beyond the technical determinism, and consider that sociology of usages takes into account users' “ways of seeing” and connects their practices to symbolic universes;
  5. Consider users and the analyze of their own practices: double mediation of technical and social aspects;
  6. Study the relationship between “saying” and “doing”.
