Abstract

On the occasion of the bimillenary of Livy's death, an international conference will be organized, on October 5 and 6, at Paris Nanterre University and the École Normale Supérieure of Paris.

Argument

2017 will mark the 2000th anniversary of Livy's death. Three years after the celebration of Augustus' death, this conference will be the opportunity to review the various readings that current scholarship develop on Livy's works, and to question its transmission and impact on our past and contemporary representations of Rome's history and society.

Scholars are invited to focus on :

  1. The structure of the Ab urbe condita : do the work's divisions into chapters, decades or books reflect Livy's composition ? What about the use and choice of sources ? How much were the composition and publication conditions modified throughout the writing process ?
  2. The transmission of the Ab urbe condita : How was it transmitted, since Antiquity, throughout the centuries ? To what extent can we talk about the ''canonization'' of this work ? Which part did it play in historical studies during the XIXth and XXth centuries ?
  3. The narrative development : if we study the Ab urbe condita in the mirror of the rhetorical conception of historical writing in Antiquity, we have to question the connection between the historical narrative of events and truth. What are the methodological principles and issues of this narrative ?
  4. Livy and power : what are Livy's relations with the new imperial power ? More broadly, what is Livy's approach of the imperium romanum ?
