The European Network Remembrance and Solidarity, a governmental institution of culture based in Warsaw focusing its activities on researching, documenting and disseminating knowledge about twentieth–century European history, memory and commemoration, is seeking: researchers of cultures and politics of memory

The ENRS is developing an easily searchable and regularly updated online database about current developments in the realm of memory culture and politics of memory across European countries. The database will be a useful compendium for journalists, researchers and memory practitioners working, or interested, in cultural memorialisation, public history or politics of memory in Europe today, relating to such questions as what historical topics dominate European public discussions or how is history represented in the public sphere and what are public and political attitudes to it?

The ENRS is seeking researchers to prepare monthly reports on the memory culture and politics of memory in a selected European country. The reports will cover significant current events and phenomena related to history, remembrance, and memoralisation and concern a broad spectrum of public memory media, such as: museums, exhibitions, film, performative arts, popular culture, TV, newspapers, new media, public and political statements, and popular publications, both at the national and local levels.

Key Responsibilities

o Study of culture of memory and politics of memory in a selected country (including online and field research);
o Writing monthly reports (5,000-8,000 words) based on a form provided and a list of key issues;
o Participation in two training workshops (in July 2017, and October/November 2017) organised by the ENRS;
o Regular online contact with the project Coordinator and the ENRS;
o Seeking possible partnerships and liaising with European projects of a similar profile;
o Participation in promotional activities.

Candidate’s Profile

Essential

  • Education: a Master’s degree in Anthropology, Cultural Studies, European Studies, History, Political Science, Sociology, or similar disciplines;
  • Language skills:
    • English (C1 level or higher), including very good writing skills;
    • Fluency (C1 level or higher) in the language of the country that will be the object of the investigation
  • Ability to conduct research and draft brief analytical pieces;
  • Interest in history and memory;
  • Openness and objectivity in writing;
  • Self-discipline and ability to meet deadlines;

Desirable

PhD or post-graduate education;
Scholarly publications and/or experience in writing concise reports in English;
Research experience, in particular as regards memory politics and cultures.

Employment conditions

  • Work on a basis of a specific-task contract (monthly reports) from July to December 2017, with possible contract renewal in 2018;
  • Gross salary of 500 euros per monthly report

  • Two training workshops in Warsaw introducing the Correspondent to the methodology of the project;
  • Opportunity to gain experience in an international institution, a leading centre in the field of public history;
  • Cooperation with a young and dynamic team;

Recruitment Process 

The Project Recruitment shall be executed in two stages:

  • Stage One shall consist in the evaluation of the Applications by a selection team appointed by the Selection Team, consisting of the representatives of the IENRS Secretariat and the Country Coordinators of the ENRS, chaired by its Chairperson. That stage shall result in a list of maximum 25 Candidates qualifying for Stage Two;
  • Stage Two shall consist in interviews conducted at the Organiser’s registered seat over the telephone or the Skype communicator to verify such aspects as the Candidate’s motivation, his/her research interests, knowledge of history as well as English and/or the other foreign languages declared by the Candidate as known in the Application. The interviews shall be conducted by members of the Selection Team.
