Argument

In a context characterized by the contemporary advance of economic policies and neoliberal development models, the question of spatial justice (SJ) has played a major role. As a concept, an academic method, and a tool of action SJ brought together a significant diversity of research and processes that, in Latin America, address the links between space, politics, and social tensions in diverse contexts, with different populations and from multiple disciplinary or political perspectives.

The concept of spatial justice, as well as that of spatial injustices, has become a narrative with increasing consensus in specialized literature and activism around issues such as spatial inequalities, informal settlements, housing policies and real estate speculation, debates on urban security/insecurity, extractive mining, agrobusiness, labour market flexibilization, and so on.

A large part of academic works developed in this field have proposed theoretical discussions based on empirical data, and from this point authors have been discussing on all the apparatus that comes with the idea of spatial justice. The articulation of the theoretical and empirical dimensions seems fundamental, bearing in mind the need to address the Latin American anchorage of a debate on spatial justice that has been developed in other geographical contexts, with other meanings and other projections. The question then is about spatial justice in Latin America, for increasingly unequal territories that in turn produce more inequality, and about the relevance of spatial justice as a category for Latin American geography, urbanism, and social sciences.

From this perspective and under the concepts of justice and spatial injustices, Cuadernos de Geografía: Revista Colombiana de Geografía opens a call for contributions, research results and reflections framed in the following areas:

  1. Institutional and informal expressions of spatial (in)justices in recent and ancient contexts of violence and peace building.
  2. The new forms of economic production and its socio-environmental consequences: spatial (in)justices in political ecology debates.
  3. Spatial justice and struggles for recognition. The problem of territorial identities in the neo-liberal context.
  4. Inequalities, injustices and conflicts in the production of space, territorial planning and public policies.

The manuscripts will be selected according to their capacity to articulate empirical studies framed in one of the above thematic areas, with theoretical discussions regarding the concepts of justice and spatial injustices. Such theoretical discussions may address, among others, issues such as: claims to universality versus situated conceptions of justice; (re)distributive justice, compensatory justice or restorative justice both at the level of resources and the costs of economic development; real empowerment, strategic positioning or invisibility of claimants. They can also address social class issues related to other forms of affiliation, positioning and belonging, such as culture or religion. Finally, manuscripts could also address topics such as the articulations and contradictions between different conceptions of justice and forms of neoliberalism in multi-scalar territories; the distortions between utopian discourses, and the uses of the category of justice in the context of the tensions between the legal and the legitimate.
