Résumé

Le/La chercheur-se postdoctorant-e est recruté-e pour travailler plus spécifiquement dans l’axe 1 du programme. Le profil recherché est celui d’un-e spécialiste d’histoire religieuse américaine et plus spécifiquement des expressions religieuses africaines-américaines (Amérique du nord et Caraïbes anglophones en priorité mais le reste de l’Amérique n’est pas exclue). Il/Elle aura à travailler autour de la construction de contre-généalogies raciales produites à partir de supports religieux (malédiction de Gehazi dans Bible, création de la race blanche par Yakûb dans les récits de la Nation of Islam) inversant le stigmate qui faisait des Africains ou des Noirs les descendants d’un lignage maudit (marque de Caïn, malédiction de Cham…) ou remodelant la notion de peuple élu. Il/Elle pourra, dans ce cadre, mener ses propres travaux mais devra participer à la coordination de la recherche collective en particulier autour de la production de la base de données collaborative et collective du programme.

Presentation

The Postdoctoral Researcher is recruited to work more specifically in Axis 1 of the program. Requested profile is a specialist in American religious history and more specifically of African-American religious expressions [North America and the English-speaking Caribbean as a priority but the rest of America is not excluded]. He/She will have to work around the construction of racial counter-genealogies produced from religious supports (Gehazi curse in the Bible II Kings 5, creation of the white race by Yakûb in the narratives of the Nation of Islam…) reversing the stigma that made Africans or Blacks the descendants of a cursed lineage (Cain’s mark, Cham’s curse…) or reshaping the notion of elected people. He/She may, in this context, conduct his/her own work but will have to participate in the coordination of collective research particularly around the production of the collaborative and collective database of the programm.

Tasks within the programm

Research works.

  • Database implementation and operation
  • Participating in a collective monograph: When religion creates “race”. o Participation in workshops organized through the project
  • Participation in the final colloquium of the project.
  • Participation in an international symposium organized as part of the project.

Support for the facilitation of research

  • Participation in project management meetings o Co-organisation of 4 workshops
  • Animation of a blog.

Contribution to the development of a historical database 

  • Extraction of corpus texts or images: collection of information to fill in the database. 
  • Omeka database implementation online. Collaborative content moderation
  • Qualitative and quantitative exploitation of the database in collaboration with project team members and participation in team workshops.

Support for the promotion of research

  • Contribution to the organization of a HEMED Workshop (2021) and to the implementation of the online course (written contributions and webdoc)
  • Contribution to the production of Webdoc sequences for the general public
  • One-off contribution to the promotion of research among the student public (research seminars, one-off intervention in undergraduate courses), the school public (development of teaching sequences) and the general public (virtual exhibition, scientific culture activities)

Expected diploma and skills

  • Doctorate: preferably in history (religious history or African-American history) but applications of researchers with degrees in other disciplines (sociology, anthropology, etc.) will be reviewed.
  • Familiarity with African-American religious sources. 
  • Familiarity with digital tools related to research. A mastery of video editing would be appreciated.
  • French and English fluent.
  • Installation at Le Mans would be valued but mobility Paris/Le Mans is allowed. o Experience in teamwork and leading research would be appreciated.
