Since 2011, the European Union is facing a dramatic migrant crisis, involved by the political and social turbulences occurred in the Middle East, Central Asia and the Corn of Africa. According to the UN Refugees Agency, over 1.5 million people were forced to leave their countries since 2014. Blank spaces. A Survey on absence

Lacuna is the term which conventionally refers to the void generated, within a text, by the loss of some elements: letters, words or even sentences. It is a cavity collecting a writing suspension able to compromise the whole discourse meaning. However, the lack of words is not always identifiable as a space of incongruence or philological desperatio. Rather, it can emerge as a representational criterion and be defined as the result of external contingencies or as a voluntary or unaware communication forswearing.

It reflects the aims of the project, ie. to create a tool to capture RSS feeds concerned with international news for a number of newspapers in the world (French-, English- and Spanish-speaking), before using it to answer some research issues: what is an event? how to explain the sub/over-representation of some spaces or actors? can the flow of information be modelised at global scale?

Interactional competences and practices in a second language (ICOP-L2)

Throughout the past two decades, interactional competences and practices have gained unprecedented attention in research on second language (L2) acquisition, use and education. Following Dell Hymes’ conceptualization of communicative competence, various lines of research have for long been concerned with pragmatic development in an L2, mostly focusing on the realization of speech acts. Yet, it is only recently that research has started to systematically investigate how people's capacity to engage in social interaction is affected in their L2 and how their ability to participate in such interaction evolves over time.

    Cognition Verbs

    Modality, evidentiality and cognition

We will explore cognition verbs from a cross-linguistic perspective. The data from a sample of languages will enable us to examine the interaction between language and cognition, the evolution patterns of cognition verbs and the near-synonymity of phrases such as I think, I guess or I suppose. The keynote speaker Jan Nuyts (university of Antwerp) will present historical data that questions the origin of the parenthetical uses of mental state verbs, and allows us to reinvestigate the questions of grammaticalisation and subjectification.

Situated in the socio-discoursal and socio-cultural approaches to LSP studies (Belcher 2004), this international conference engages with the dual objective of pursuing enquiry related to studies in FASP (fiction à substrat professionnel), a genre of fiction identified and codified by Michel Petit (1999) and Shaeda Isani (2004), on the one hand and, on the other, exploring new avenues of reflection regarding other narrative forms, both fictional and non-fictional of potential interest to ESP studies.
