DIY cultures, democracy and creative participation

The year 2024 marks the 10th anniversary of KISMIF and the 50th anniversary of the Carnation Revolution in Portugal. In addition, remembering the recent loss of Howard S. Becker, the KISMIF Conference will dedicate one of its thematic lines to scientific contributions related to the work of Becker, with the intent of recognizing the transformative and innovative potential of his sociological research, thus highlighting the importance of the concept of art worlds – amongst others – which he developed and which – since 2014 – has served as the motto for the organisation of this far-reaching international conference. As such KISMIF 2024 will serve as a pivotal occasion of reunion and celebration.

Territories, communities and sustainability: views from Southern Europe

The theme “Territories, communities and sustainability : views from Southern Europe” is a challenging approach to study the links between different areas of knowledge, inviting interdisciplinary outlooks to sociologists and other social scientists interested in environment, development and educational issues. This can be a particularly relevant reflection in the post-pandemic phase of current times, highlighting regional and local features of a global experience. It allows comparing Southern European societies, between themselves but also with other European (and non-European) societies, and therefore, providing insights to better understand each geographic and cultural area.

    Cities in Transition

A review of historical discourses, planning decisions and conservation strategies

This interdisciplinary conference, realised by the Vienna University of Technology in cooperation with the University of Bamberg (KDWT), and the research network UrbanMetaMapping asks: Which phenomena in society, planning and heritage conservation accompanied historical transformation processes of cities and, above all, (how) did they interact? What insights can be drawn from the observation of historical processes and what can be derived from them for current developments? The focus of interest lies on historical processes of evaluation, selection, and planning in the historic building stock and the discourses of different players - individuals, institutions, or organisations - that accompanied these processes. Also to be examined are the effects of planning and conservation decisions not only on the built but also on the social structure of cities.

Trusting the State? Law, Bureaucracies and Politics

From uncertain relationships with frontline workers, public servants and even judges, trust in the state emerges as a central issue in the relations between the state and citizens and users of public policies. This workshop aims to explore the place of trust and mistrust in interactions with, or perceptions of the state in various contexts, and to further explore how trust in the state and its institutions is constructed, enacted or contested. To do that, we connect and combine three entry points through which state-citizen interactions have been considered so far: politics, bureaucracies, and the law.

Urban Neoliberalism in the 21st Century: Exclusion and Struggles for the Right to the City

    Journal “Forum Sociológico”

Journal Forum Sociológico has an open call for papers on the scope of a special issue about urban neoliberalism to be published in the 1st semester of 2024. The issue aims to question and document the urban transformation experienced today, based on focused research - conceptually and empirically - on the urban margins of contemporary metropolises and taking into account the way in which three planes intersect, in concrete terms - like the elements of an experience chemistry - react together in the urban space: the question of class and the ethnic-racial question, to which, crucially, the question of gender is added. How do these three plans complicate and problematize the contradictions of the new contemporary neoliberal urban model? We invite the presentation of articles with an interdisciplinary approach, crossing all disciplines with a focus on critical urban studies.

Penser l’action civique en relation avec les politiques urbaines et la planification

In this seminar, Dr Iolanda Bianchi will present her recent work on the democratisation of local public services by way of the paradigm of the common. The presentation will focus on two urban contexts, Naples and Barcelona, and examines the common-inspired transformation of their local public services, respectively, water services (Acqua Bene Comune A.S.) and sociocultural facilities (Citizens Asset Programme). The seminar will reflect on the capacity of public-common institutions to represent an alternative and more democratic management modality for local public services.

    Inhabiting Collectivity

Guest editors Nele Aernouts (VUB), Emmanuelle Lenel (USL-B) and Christine Schaut (ULB) invite contributions for the themed issue of Clara 10 “Inhabiting Collectivity”. This issue of Clara pursues a twofold objective. At a larger scale, it aims at shedding light on the context within which collective housing is produced, on their underpinning architectural and spatial models, and on the interplay among the involved actors. At a smaller scale, it questions the intentions underlying this production by investigating its architectural and social mechanisms, and how these can foster or instead hinder certain uses and forms of sociability.

European Energy Shortages during the Short Coal Age (1860-1960)

The winter of 2022-2023 in Europe may become the harshest since 1944 due to fuel and electricity scarcity. This is an obvious moment for revisiting historical energy shortages. The proposed workshop will target the period of repeated fuel shortages in Europe from roughly 1860 to 1960 – the century during which coal supplied more than 50 % of all energy in Europe.

    Housing co-creation for tomorrow’s cities

    RE-DWELL Conference 2022

Responses to different crises allow us to rethink housing conceptions and identify initiatives, policies and patterns that can make a difference for the future. Recently, the Covid-19 pandemic has revealed critical failures of current housing systems and the changing nature of our understanding of housing challenges. Initiatives and collaborations with a transformative potential have emerged or have been reinforced in that context. Moreover, transformations of conceptions, of policy agendas and of professional practices have been steered since a longer time by the recognition of the affordability crisis and of climate change as major challenges for the housing sector. The conference will focus on present or past collaborative initiatives that bring together local actors, from institutions to the third and private sector, regional and central governments, technicians, residents and sometimes academia. We will discuss the potential of such multi-actor processes and of co-creation to adapt the ways we conceive, build and manage housing to present and future challenges that cities face.
