(Neo)Cybernetic Paths for an Epistemology of Digital Cultures

    “Open Philosophy” Journal

This volume of Open Philosophy aims to draw a line between the classical cybernetic schools and sub-disciplines on the one hand and their implications in cultural theories and the contemporary positions influenced by them on the other. We want to refer complexity back to its genealogical roots and in this respect critically trace the realisation of operationally closed systems and self-organising processes.

    Arabists and Hebraists (18th - 20th century)

Hamsa Journal of Judaic and Islamic Studies

Looking for new contributions about the theme within the universe of Arabic and Hebraic studies, the next volume of HAMSA will be dedicated to the topic Arabists and Hebraists (18th -20th century). It is intended to summon up Arabists and Hebraists whose activity was developed inside or outside the Academy, also encompassing those who work in a solitary way or in non-traditional more and less ephemeral groups, or alternative networks. The chronological range extends from the 18th to the 20th century, allowing the inclusion of the beginning of modern Arabic and Hebraic studies, in Europe, Middle East and new American states, as also others less obvious regions of the world.

Forest citizenship for disaster resilience: learning from COVID-19

Postdoctoral fellowship of the Research Project Trans-Atlantic Platform (FAPESP/ESRC/NSF)

The Project “Forest citizenship for disaster resilience: learning from COVID-19” and the Department of Sociology at Federal University of São Carlos (UFSCar) are receiving applications for one postdoctoral (PD) scholarship to develop research on forest citizenship in Amazonia. This scholarship is associated with the Trans-Atlantic Platform, supported by FAPESP Grant 2021/07558-3, directed by Prof. Dr. Rodrigo Constante Martins in Brazil, Luke Parry in the United Kingdom, and Peter Newton in the United States. The main goal of this postdoctoral fellowship, which was pre-approved by the Sao Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP), is to investigate how forest peoples, notably rural communities and riverine populations, have made use of specific practices and actions to face the pandemic of COVID-19, and how the strategies adopted by these social groups - outside the established institutional circuits - have been constituted as important instruments for the maintenance of their ways of life.

Moyen Âges d’en haut et d’en bas : perméabilités, interactions et débats entre recherche académique et cultures populaires

Medieval studies and medievalism both focus on the same object, the Middle Ages. Yet their approaches are different. Long separated, medieval studies and medievalism are now challenged to rethink their links in research, teaching and social dissemination of knowledge. The summer school aims to help young researchers to strengthen their understanding of these scientific developments, to position their research effectively, and to develop networks with international researchers. The school, in French and English, proposes lectures by world-renowned specialists, debates, meetings with professionals and practical workshops.

    Religion and Identity

Intersections of collective and private identity with religion and spirituality

Ever since the very first human social formations, the spheres of religion and identity have intersected significantly. Examples of the endless forms by which collective and individual identities are interwoven throughout the entirety of our human existence are embedded in our historical records. How is identity constructed, shaped, and maintained by religious activities? How do religions change the identities of their converts? The upcoming conference hosted by the Department of Religious Studies at the University of Szeged aims to open a symposium where topics concerning the intersections of religiosity and identity – should it be private or public – can be discussed in a broader sense.

Translating Knowledge: From Theory to Praxis

Translating academic knowledge into social praxis has always been a central question for critical theory. This is particularly true in an age of polycrisis. Climate change, the COVID-19 pandemic, and housing precarity yield a unique moment that urges us to consider how to bridge the gap between academic and practical knowledge. We understand translation not only in the linguistic sense, but in a broader sense as interpretations, associations, and representations that mediate between different contexts. Together with John Clarke and Shahram Khosravi, this graduate conference aims to ask: What can be gained or lost in the translation of knowledge? How can translation be used for community-oriented social research? How can it be used as a critical methodological tool? We invite papers that draw on empirical analyses as well as theoretical ones.
