    Revue « Anthropology of the Middle East » n° 20.1, 2025

Collecting, Growing, and Exploring in Early Modernity

This workshop aims to focus attention on the collections of naturalia, on the one hand, and on the attempts to grow exotic plants in Europe and the adventurous journeys that the search for tropical plants and animals they encouraged, on the other. The organizers of this workshop invite interdisciplinary contributions addressing the topic from the perspective of each discipline, from art history to material culture, from botany to gastronomy, from travel literature to cartography. Proposals that feature a female figure as protagonist are particularly encouraged, as the importance of the female contribution to this topic, although demonstrated, remains under-researched and under-published.

    Image Deluge and Globalization

The fields of visual studies, cultural history, and art history have encountered considerable challenges in addressing the plurality of images. These disciplines typically favor a singular outlook on images, neglecting the sheer deluge of visual representations that characterize the modern media landscape. Nevertheless, the constant flood of images has been part of our daily lives since the introduction of mass reproduction techniques, evolving alongside the gradual development of engraving, illustrated print, advertisement, cinema, television, video games, and now digital media. Observers of these consecutive stages of mass visual communication and consumption have consistently linked this phenomenon with the broader concept of globalization, often raising concerns about cultural homogenization, and loss of identity. This conference aims to provide a comprehensive exploration of image globalization, representing the wide range of subjects and methodologies used in the domain.

    Capitalization and the Start-Up Economy

Critical Perspectives on Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Venture Capitalism

For the past twenty years, social sciences have studied financialization as a process affecting many (if not almost all) aspects of contemporary societies. More recently, research at the crossroads of sociology, economics and the science and technology studies (STS) developed a new understanding of financialization, centered on how “things are turned into assets” (Birch and Muniesa 2020). Such a perspective provides useful tools for critically examining the start-up economy and emerging business practices related to venture capital funding. This workshop aims to bring together scholars from science and technology studies and beyond who work to develop a transversal perspective across various cultural sites and practices. Through different formats (keynote, round table, panels), the workshop will offer a setting to conduct in-depth discussions on capitalization.

Toys Matter: The Power of Playthings

The overarching conference theme, Toys Matter: The Power of Playthings, is designed to span the role toys play in our individual and collective identities, the various ways they reflect and shape our worlds (both positively or negatively), and the impact of technology, environmental concerns and societal/cultural crises on toy design, manufacture and use. Sessions will provide toy scholars and industry professionals opportunities to reflect on extant toy research while looking forward to expand our understanding of what counts as a toy, the power of playthings, and the many ways they matter -- for both children and adults. We invite work that examines the power of playthings both historically and in our ever-changing worlds, especially as we navigate these precarious and even perilous times. All play objects (i.e., physical, digital or hybrid) are included in the scope of toys to be discussed including games and indoor and outdoor play spaces.

Meta, Matrix, Mater. Renaissance Metaphors of the Matrix

The female sex has become the core of an increasing number of early modern studies since the rise of a gender-sensitive feminist viewpoint in art history. Many have dealt with images of a hairless and polished vulva, sometimes ostensibly eroticized. Pending this approach, the 2022 CHAR Workshop, Meta, Matrix, Mater. Renaissance Metaphors of the Matrix, wishes to re-explore the imaginary of the female sex from within and focus on the metaphors of the matrix in images and material culture in the Renaissance.

    Himalayan Journeys. Circulations and Transformations

This conference goal is to foreground movement as a particular social dynamic and to consider mobility and circulatory regimes, trails, routes and roads as the “connective tissue” within various historical and political contexts and against the backdrop of rooted cultures and identities inscribed in particular landscapes. We wish to explore how these circulations relate to cultural practices, imaginaries and materialities and how they are socially transformative. What can the study of circulation tell us about the Himalayas, their social and spatial dynamics ? Does the Himalayan social fabric produce peculiar circulatory regimes and pathways ? How have relations between states and circulatory phenomena evolved ? What are the new cultural and moral geographies that emerge from this global-cum-local circulation ?

Ambiances souterraines.

Christian-Muslim Missionary Encounters, Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries

Mission and Modernity Research Academy (MiMoRA#3)

The study of missionary work occupies a central place in the interdisciplinary body of scholarship on relations and exchanges between Christianity and Islam in pre-modern as well as modern times. Most notably from the nineteenth century onwards, missions became an essential aspect of the globalization and modernization of these two ‘world religions’. Scholars from various disciplines have discovered the missionary encounter as a ‘space’ par excellence to observe and analyze Christian-Muslim interactions, which range from rejection and conflict to dialogue and mutual exchange. This research requires the breaching of the boundaries between disciplines, languages, scripts, archival heuristics, geographical and chronological specialisms; and the creation of an interdisciplinary scholarly dialogue. The aim of this international and multidisciplinary week-long research academy is to stimulate further critical study of the multilateral research on Christian-Muslim contacts and relationships in missionary contexts.
