Envisioning Latin America: Power and Representation in audiovisual (re)productions

Forma Revista d'Estudis Comparatius. Art, Literatura, Pensament

This issue seeks to critically address power structures in audiovisual (re)productions in and from Latin America and discuss how these play a role in the societal construction and representation of individual and collective identities, the ‘us’ and the ‘other’. By doing so, it aims at understanding how these representations – and broader discourses associated therewith – can be critically examined through media productions (cinema, television, radio, photography etc.) and their use as historical sources.

Art, Images and Material Culture in Transit

As is well known, during the Early Modern period, hundreds of objects, artworks, painted and illustrated documents and manuscripts were sent from the Spanish viceroyalties in America to Iberian Spain. This circulation has been the object of renewed academic interest in recent years. In response to this trend, it seems necessary to better understand the particular place that Madrid, as both city (villa) and court (corte), occupied within this broader phenomenon. We invite proposals based on original research that can contribute to advancing the current state of knowledge and explore new questions and theoretical frameworks for our better understanding of these unique objects and works of art.

The International Conference Cultural Coordinates in present-day museology: Five neologisms is aimed at research that focuses on analysing the contemporary museological discourse and its effects on cultural communication. Numerous questions arise, for example, regarding curatorial practices, the new formulas of knowledge transmission, museology’s potential contributions to social cohesion, the mediation made possible by the new technologies and the critical contribution to be expected concerning issues such as gender demands, environmental sustainability and others. The sections are headed by the corresponding neologisms into which the themes that are the subject of debate and analysis are divided.

Le but de ce numéro de la revue Socioscapes est d’analyser de manière critique la relation entre le racisme, la santé et l’environnement, en particulier la relation entre le racisme environnemental et les inégalités de santé, l’imbrication des maux environnementaux avec les maux sociaux du racisme et du capitalisme, à travers la collecte d’études théoriques ou empiriques. The Iberian East Indies

Frontiers, Actors, Dynamics

The historiography of imperial Spain and of the Iberian-initiated first globalization has recently been renewed by the study of exchanges between Asia and America and of the Spanish Pacific. The purpose of this one-day seminar is to further this historiographical renewal and to shed some new light on the Iberian East Indies, at a time when Spain and Portugal were the two main European powers in the region. The focus will be put on exchanges, dynamics of cooperation and rivalry between empires and also between various key actors: missionaries, merchants, soldiers and officials. The aim is thus to improve our understanding of the multiple connections between the Asian territories of both empires.

Cozinhando imagens, tejiendo feminismos. Latin american feminist film and visual art collectives

During the last years, there has been a revitalization of feminist movements internationally. In Latin America, the performance of ‘A Rapist in Your Path’ by the collective LasTesis on 25 November 2019 put Chilean feminism in the global spotlight. This revitalization is also pushing for political and legal reforms, such as the approval of a bill legalising abortion in Argentina on 30 December 2020. The alliances between feminists, artists, and filmmakers in Latin America are not new. Fuelled by the 1970s women’s movement, several feminist film collectives emerged during this decade and instrumentalized cinema to raise awareness about women’s issues and intervene in political contexts.

Contributions of articles for electronic journal Verbum et Lingua

The electronic magazine Verbum et Lingua: Didáctica, lengua y cultura will dedicate its 16th edition (July-December 2020) to the topic of Chican@s studies. Grosso modo, for Ornelas, Ramírez and Padilla (1975), the Chican@s studies have made a great effort to integrate four main constructs: race, class, culture and gender/sexuality. These constructs are present in the work of different artists who express their ideology in order to politicize and lead their community(ies) to change. According to Macias (2018), the Chican@s field of study seeks to make research holistic and multidisciplinary, as well as inclusive, comparative, grounded, up-to-date and critical. At the same time, it seeks to apply the results to social justice, education, as well as to the change of the global Chican@ communities.

In this way, Art and Music, as resources, have been one of the key elements to be able to understand a culture since it has been the mechanism through which humans have been able to capture and transmit ideas and knowledge.

Romance Languages in Medieval Latin Documentation

Following recent discussions on the presence of Romance elements in medieval Latin documents, we propose this meeting, which aims at offering a new opportunity to reflect on all forms of manifestation of Romance languages in the mentioned texts, as well as to present the latest scientific advances made in their study in the wider European context. Thus, issues related to how, both morphologically and syntactically, the diplomas show the transition from Latin to Romance languages, the mechanisms for Latinizing Romance elements, or the presence of borrowings from other languages that were assumed by Romance languages, may be subject to analysis. Similarly, contributions will be welcome regarding the role that medieval Latin lexicography plays in relation to Romance language and how dictionaries and lexical databases contribute to their study.

Myth: Theories of a Controversial Concept

The bibliography on modern reworkings of mythical narratives is immense: Greco-Latin myths in novels and adventure films, adaptations of Celtic, Norse, or Slavic myths in cinema, TV series and comics, the relationships between Eastern and Western myths… The list is endless and somehow overabundant compared to the smaller (though still huge) bibliography of theories of myth. Different key factors of our contemporary society (the phenomenon of globalisation, the dogmas of relativism, the logics of immanence) make the definition of myth even more difficult for the non-specialized public and for academic researchers alike. These questions, among others, are those that the 7^th International Conference on Myth Criticism aims to answer.

Verbum et Lingua : Didáctica, lengua y cultura est une revue académique du département des langues modernes du Centro Universitario de Ciencias Sociales y Humanidades de l'université de Guadalajara. Elle a été conçue comme une publication spécialisée dans l'étude des langues d'un point de vue linguistique, didactique et culturel. Cette revue, qui répond aux besoins du milieu professionnel au Mexique, est publiée tous les six mois, de janvier à juin et de juillet à décembre. Elle publie également des articles, des essais, des entretiens et des critiques en cinq langues : espagnol, anglais, français, allemand et italien, sans restreindre l'étude ou l'inclusion d'autres langues. Rhythm is a central element in the creation of meaning in art, and its configuration is such that it requires a multi, inter and transdisciplinary approach. The difference of materials, procedures and events masks the resemblance of rhythmic phenomena that are similar in different arts and hides their identity or their homology. In the work of some scholars, the concepts do not seem to belong to a particular artistic discipline, being rather characteristic of the rhythmic phenomenon. The objective of this conference is to provide an instance for exchanging knowledge, concerns and aspirations for those who have been devoting themselves to the study of rhythm and artistic creation on the subject.
