Imago, Actus et Verbum. Challenges and Questions in Medieval Studies
A crossdisciplinary dialogue between philology, philosophy, history, art and literature
On the outset of the 21st century, cross-disciplinary studies on the Middle Ages seem to be in need of a careful reconsideration of their nature, scope and aims. This is specially so after the series of "turns" undergone by historiography in the last four decades. Despite their differences, philosophy, history, philology , literary studies and art are also bound through their work on texts; and all are currently faced with both methodological and substantive issues raised by important shifts in contemporary society. This congress is devoted to a global assessment of the current state of affairs in medieval studies, but also the upcoming challenges.

Terra universalis. New perspectives on Early-Modern first globalization.
2021 The Renaissance Society of America Annual Meeting
For several years, the new concept of space that emerged between the end of the 15th and during the 16th century has been the object of study by several disciplines. Besides well-known works by historians of science, contributions by epistemologists and historians of geography analysed the genesis of both the concept of universal Earth – i.e. the representation and conception of the word as a unity – and new perspectives on art and science.

The conference “Other times, Other Spaces” explores history (time and space) as something in constant transition, something in the making here and now. The world has witnessed wars, pandemics, and natural and man-made disasters. Today, we are more than ever threatened by climate change, depletion of resources, devastating pandemics, and disparities between the rich and the poor, North and South and West and East. The fears of the past are haunting the present, our here and now. Radical transformations are taking place across the world. Human relations are atomized, fragmented, alienated, and yet, paradoxically, consolidated by disasters and calamities such as the current Covid-19 pandemic. As a result, our perceptions of the world and humanity are being rethought and reshaped every day.

Les dimensions transnationales de l’activisme dans la culture contemporaine du livre
Mémoires du livre / Studies in Book Culture, vol. 26-2, automne 2022

Issue 13 of On_Culture (Summer 2022)
The editorial team of On_Culture, would like to draw your attention to the call for abstracts for issue #13 of On_Culture (Summer 2022) on “In_Visibilities”. This On_Culture issue will approach questions of in_visibility from a power-analytical and ideology-critical perspective. Avoiding a binary opposition, visibility and invisibility are conceptualized as two mutually entangled concepts. By using the underscore in the orthography (in_visibility), we want to highlight the processual continuum between the two concepts and create a space for ambiguities that put the visibility concept under re-negotiation.

Resistance and protest in postcolonial Africa: representations in language and literature
Exploring verbal and nonverbal expression and representation of resistance, dissent and dissidence in Postcolonial Africa
Language and discourse are central in power mediation in any society. This concern has provoked scientific burgeoning that led to the development of a social approach to linguistics, called critical linguistics (CL), which recognized power relationships as a central theoretical issue, and discourse as well as text as its main unit of analysis. Given the complexity of globalized understandings and practices of citizenship and political engagement, there is a need to explore how Africans are participating as activists and emancipated citizens in a vibrant public sphere. This volume seeks to explore the verbal and signed acts of resistance and protest in the postcolonial context of Africa from a variety of angles and epistemological approaches. It explores how knowledge and political/social call to action (rejecting leaders, resisting, dissenting) is perceived, shared and used by the individual and/or social groups in postcolonial Africa.

Humankind and Fat. Attraction, Repulsion, Health and Politics
12th International Symposium of CORPUS
Fat that our bodies accumulate, fat we consume, our representations of fatty foods and bodies… The relationships between humankind and fat are a fascinating topic for social and medical scientists. They are highly variable according to the places and the times and, often, much more nuanced and complex that the dominant discourse suggests. Not very so long ago, European peasants valued fat. Today, their urbanised descendants have panic attacks if they have to move a hole in the belt! However, even if they are lipophobic, they are still linking some traditional fatty foods with festival meals. Western canons of beauty radically changed since the time when Romanian sayings went that a beautiful woman had to be fat or that a fat man was healthy. Entertainment media teach us that perfect people are thin. Nevertheless, the apparent triumph of this ideal of the body beautiful does not mean that fatter bodies totally lost their sex appeal or their power of fascination. Out of Europe, the relationships between humankind and fat can obviously differ, even in our globalized world.

Melancholic Anglo-French Literature by Women: Narrative and Poetry (XVII-XIX)
In today's literary world, deeply impacted by gender studies, in which women writers and their works are sometimes highlighted that, were it not for the political sway of these studies, would never have received particular consideration, it is necessary to bring to light those whose work helped to elevate narrative and poetry in the English and French languages.

Las Vanguardistas: Spanish Women Poets in Transnational Contexts (1920–1975)
Spanish avant-garde poetry has traditionally been associated with the “Generation of 1927”, a group of male poets that has dominated critical discussions of literary history for almost a century. Studies that have embraced the generational model have often considered the Spanish avant-garde either as a unique national phenomenon or as an imitation of foreign literary models. This special issue challenges these views by considering women’s participation in avant-garde circles in and beyond Spain and placing the Spanish avant-garde in a transnational context.

Perspectives on Women’s Autobiographies from Africa and the Diaspora
This international conference aims to examine the autobiographies of women from Africa (during colonial and post-colonial periods) and the Diaspora to shed light on the meaning and significance of the various messages conveyed through those texts. Although there is an abundance of autobiographical texts by these women, many remain unknown to the general public. From that angle, the conference is positioned as a real prospect to further bring those half- veiled writings to public's attention. As such, the conference intends to bring together scholars, researchers, experts and doctoral students, in human and social sciences, as well as in languages and arts, affiliated to universities, research centers, NGOs and civil societies in Africa and around the world. Their objective is to present and discuss women's autobiographical writings from Africa and the Diaspora from a multidisciplinary perpective.

Eroticism, Poetic Concretism, and Visuality (1960-1970)
The erotic imaginary and the relation between body, gender and text nourished the daring experiences of neo-avant-garde visual poetics in the 1960s and 1970s by establishing themselves at the core of “verbi-voco-visual explorations” (McLuhan, 1967). Without losing sight of the vast cultural heritage and references of historical avant-gardes as well as of Beat Poetry, Fluxus and Situationist visual-erotic production, the symposium aims at reconstructing and assessing the impact of erotic desire on Concrete and Visual Poetry through a rich corpus of literary works, magazines, and ephemera starting with the Bibliothèque Kandinsky – Centre Pompidou collections and expanding the reflection to other relevant examples of post-war experimental poetry. In addition to keynote lectures and academic presentations, the conference will host poetry readings and performances in order to prompt an interdisciplinary and international debate on the issues, and to examine a unique body of works that illuminate the far-reaching conceptual and poetic implications of neo-avant-garde verbo-visual eroticism.

Romantic Legacies in Modern and Contemporary Film Aesthetics
The ‘return’ to Romanticism in the recent consideration of modernist cinemas can be taken as a way to frame the apparent contradictions in the work of a number of key figures: the revolutionary cinema of Jean-Luc Godard seems at odds with the seeming reactionism of a sanctification of natural beauty in his ‘late’ works. The strict materialism of Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet, in its turn, gave way to reflections on the necessity of myth and utopian ideals in the politicization of art. And although the cinema of Marguerite Duras is characterized by a destructive negativity, her films exhibit a minute attention to material presence. We believe that the same contradictions that characterize these works can be found in the films of a number of contemporary filmmakers - Chantal Akerman, Abbas Kiarostami, Hong Sang-soo, Wang Bing, Lav Diaz, Albert Serra etc. - allowing us to align them with the project of aesthetic modernism. It is our contention that this project can indeed best be approached by considering its romantic undercurrent.
