Histoire et mémoire : réinterprétation épistémologique du passé de l’Afrique dans un contexte postcolonial

    “Práticas da História” journal

This special issue of Práticas da História is interested in receiving contributions, referring to colonial and post-colonial African contexts. It is important to better understand what is happening in different African countries, at the level of the Academy but also in other spaces where social memory and history confront each other, and how political, ideological, economic and linguistic factors interfere in those situations. In the case of the former Portuguese colonies, which will soon celebrate 50 years of independence, there are additional factors, such as the later end of colonial rule and the delay in historiography about Africa that occurred until recent decades, both in Portugal and in Brazil.

(Digital) Retrospectives on Historiography from Africa. Decolonization, the African press, and the uses of knowledge

Journal « Práticas da História »

This special issue of Práticas da História reflects on contemporary epistemological possibilities and constraints in the writing of history. Therefore, it welcomes both contributions that dwell on African journals (scholarly, literary, artistic and ephemeral periodicals) from the 1950s to 1980s, and on the histories behind said periodicals. We look forward to contributions that explore different and contested visions of decolonization and future-making for the African continent and its diaspora. We also invite articles investigating differently situated historiographies from Africa: that use local vernacular by incorporating idiom, local imagery, myth and folklore; that relate to the present or the deep past. We also encourage more nuanced takes on the “nationalist historiography” that when viewed as a monolith was so dominant at the time.

Vicissitudes of the Posthuman Forty Years After Foucault’s Death

Forty years after Foucault's death and sixty after the publication of An Archaeology of the Human Sciences, we would like to invite you to interrogate the posthuman as an open problem and process on the historical and epistemic level. In particular, we would like to discuss whether and how historiographical and methodological issues pertaining to the archeological project have been transformed, scaled down, transposed or partially resolved today.

Doctoral researcher in the field of history of citizen participation

The recent focus on citizen and participatory science has led to new perspectives on the contributions of “amateur” or citizen historians – recognizing the pejorative aspect of the “amateur” term – to the production of historical knowledge. The doctoral researcher will study citizen-based associations and their historical and heritage productions. The research will help replacing the debates about public participation into broader and longer historical perspectives and provide new highlights on how members of the public take part in preserving and interpreting the past.

History of the History of Archaeology: between Archaeologists’ and Historians’ Concerns

Figures, Trends, and Perspectives (International Union of Prehistoric and Protohistoric Sciences - IUPPS 2023 conference)

Since several decades, historians and sociologists of science scrutinize the history of science as a practice. References demonstrate, first, the relevance of investigating who are the writers of disciplinary histories and what are the uses of these histories and, second, archaeologists’ concern to this regard. This session organised by the “History of Archaeology” commission is intended to strengthen these studies from the case of archaeology.

7th International Workshop on Historical Epistemology

This international workshop on Historical Epistemology is dedicated to exploring new ways of approaching the historical, conceptual, methodological, and technical relations between the arts and the sciences. Rather than looking for logical criteria for demarcating these domains, the workshop aims to question the arts/sciences dyad from the vantage point of its history.

Clio Reflects. XXI Historical Fiction by Women and about Women

We invite authors and researchers working in various academic disciplines to submit chapter proposals that look at post-2000 historical fiction, whether literary, visual and performing art, e.g., film and television series, or in games, and explore questions such as: what do women look for and, more importantly, find in the past? For what purposes and with what effects do female authors intersect historical fiction and reality? How does female historical fiction situate itself with regard to history? What insights does female historical fiction contribute to our current state of knowledge?

    Other Times, Other Spaces

The conference “Other times, Other Spaces” explores history (time and space) as something in constant transition, something in the making here and now. The world has witnessed wars, pandemics, and natural and man-made disasters. Today, we are more than ever threatened by climate change, depletion of resources, devastating pandemics, and disparities between the rich and the poor, North and South and West and East. The fears of the past are haunting the present, our here and now. Radical transformations are taking place across the world. Human relations are atomized, fragmented, alienated, and yet, paradoxically, consolidated by disasters and calamities such as the current Covid-19 pandemic. As a result, our perceptions of the world and humanity are being rethought and reshaped every day.

    Arabists and Hebraists (18th - 20th century)

Hamsa Journal of Judaic and Islamic Studies

Looking for new contributions about the theme within the universe of Arabic and Hebraic studies, the next volume of HAMSA will be dedicated to the topic Arabists and Hebraists (18th -20th century). It is intended to summon up Arabists and Hebraists whose activity was developed inside or outside the Academy, also encompassing those who work in a solitary way or in non-traditional more and less ephemeral groups, or alternative networks. The chronological range extends from the 18th to the 20th century, allowing the inclusion of the beginning of modern Arabic and Hebraic studies, in Europe, Middle East and new American states, as also others less obvious regions of the world.

Imago, Actus et Verbum. Challenges and Questions in Medieval Studies

A crossdisciplinary dialogue between philology, philosophy, history, art and literature

On the outset of the 21st century, cross-disciplinary studies on the Middle Ages seem to be in need of a careful reconsideration of their nature, scope and aims. This is specially so after the series of "turns" undergone by historiography in the last four decades. Despite their differences, philosophy, history, philology , literary studies and art are also bound through their work on texts; and all are currently faced with both methodological and substantive issues raised by important shifts in contemporary society. This congress is devoted to a global assessment of the current state of affairs in medieval studies, but also the upcoming challenges.

    Reading History in Antiquity

    Audience-oriented perspectives on Classical Historiography

Although the outcomes of reader-response criticism have repeatedly and meticulously been used in the analysis of other genres of classical literature (epic, tragedy, and oratory), the application of such a perspective still remains a significant desideratum in the field of classical historiography. The conference “Reading History in Antiquity: Audience-Oriented Perspectives on Classical Historiography” aspires to fill this gap.

History and drama: The pan-European tradition

    DramaNet Conference V

Rereading Aristotle, Dionysius of Halicarnassus, and Demetrius through the lens of contemporary narratology provides scholarship with a potentially fruitful perspective for investigating the relationship between historical narrative and other forms of literature. In particular, the reflections of Dionysius and Demetrius on narrative style at the micro-level, as well as those of Aristotle on history and tragedy as ways of representing knowledge at the macro-level, might enable historians and comparatists to focus on the question of how pan-European historical narratives are related to the drama of their times.

Pour mener à bien cette entreprise de croisement des recherches, nous organisons un colloque du 19 au 21 octobre 2017, auquel seront invités des chercheurs de différentes disciplines et spécialistes de divers espaces.

Intersections of Art, Science, and Technology in Soviet Film and Culture

By maintaining the tension between artists’ imaginative approaches to technology in the Soviet Union (Meyerhold’s Biomechanics), film directors’ use of science such as physiology (Eisenstein’s Expressive Movement), and scientists’ own theorization of art history (Lev Vygotsky’s The Psychology of Art), this workshop aims at unpacking the historical and political forces behind Soviet film theory, film practice, and art history in relation to science and technology. While examining the juncture between art, science, and technology in post-Revolutionary Russia, with a focus on the avant-garde period until the death of Joseph Stalin, cinema is thus considered as a device beyond its medium of film (Francois Albera, Maria Tortajada: Cinema Beyond Film) and the medium-specificity of the arts is called into question.

From Xenakis to the present: the Continuum in music and architecture

    Continuum 2016

Since the Classical era and the Middle Ages, and in particular since Plato’s Timeus, the concept of continuum has preoccupied thinkers. In the early 20th century, this notion was reactivated by the theory of relativity as well as other theories such as the uncertainty principle, changing our perception of the world, and consequently artistic discourse. We propose to examine where we are today in terms of the concept of continuum, both in theory and in practice. An interdisciplinary approach will enable us to evaluate the relevancy of this notion, comparing and contrasting it with other methodologies, during this international conference.
