Rocky Landscapes at the intersection of people and rocks

The past human activity of digging rock outcrops produced different features, among which quarries and rock cut sites. Quarries and rock-cut features often coexist within the same rock formation, or overlap with one another, creating a complex landscape in which the interaction between human communities and the bedrock is enhanced. The conference aims at exploring the landscapes and environments of human-rock encounters.

Andalusi Architecture: Shapes, Meaning and Influences

    “Arts” journal

The goal of this special issue of Arts is to gather knowledge regarding Andalusi art and inspire readers to learn more about it. Indeed, the importance of Andalusi art in its developmental stage and in the evolution of Hispanic architecture is undeniable. At present, a large group of monuments and archaeological remains continue to remind us of that great period of history in the Iberian Peninsula (from the 8th to the 15th century). Accordingly, and in consequence, a few years ago, Arts published a Special Issue titled “Andalusi Architecture: Shapes, Meaning and Influences” to highlight the importance of Andalusi art in the scientific community, and numerous prominent international specialists participated. The importance of this publication lies in the dissemination of artistic elements of Andalusian art, not only during the 8th and 15th centuries, but also in later centuries as a reminder of their influence.

To mark the five hundredth anniversary of Leonardo da Vinci’s death, the “Istituto Autonomo Villa Adriana e Villa d’Este - Villae” (Tivoli, Rome) is organizing a conference with the theme of: “Leonardo and Antiquity”, at Hadrian’s Villa. At the dawn of the 16th century, Leonardo da Vinci visited Villa Adriana, then known as “old Tivoli”.

Cathedrals and Mosques: Building Urban Memories and Landscapes in Southern Europe (12th - 14th centuries)

This international conference will discuss interdisciplinary questions regarding the importance of cathedrals and mosques in the definition of memory and urban landscape in the medieval Mediterranean from the twelfth to the fourteenth centuries. Our research aims at analysing the role these two buildings played in configuring the urban fabric of the Mediterranean world. One of our primary objectives is to understand how these buildings defined medieval landscape and urban space. How did they modify and condition the social and functional organisation of their urban surroundings? What architectural features contributed to their place in civic memory (decoration, architectural style and building techniques)? We are interested in the place they occupy in their cities’ urban planning and topography.

Lost and Transformed Cities: a digital perspective

The city is by definition a living entity. It translates itself into a collectiveness of individuals who share and act on a material, social and cultural setting. Its history is one of dreams, achievements and loss. As such, it also bears a history of identity. To know the history of cities is to understand our own place in the contemporaneity. The past is always seen through the eyes of the present and can only be understood as such. On the occasion of the 261st anniversary of the 1755 earthquake in Lisbon, we invite scholars and experts in the fields of heritage studies, digital humanities, history, history of art and information technology to share and debate their experience and knowledge on digital  heritage.
