  Formalism/Idealism: Comparative Literary History (1860-1960)

  The colloquium at the Paris Center will make a case that the practice and theory of comparative literature in the 21^st century must be accompanied by ongoing reflection on the history of the discipline.  In particular, the participants will ponder the following questions: how did Formalism (attention to artistic form, either atomized or holistic) coexist with Idealism (defined provisionally as resistance to positivism, empiricism, and even to “rationalism”) in different varieties of comparative literary history, as instantiated by these and other scholars? What kind of insight might a reconfiguration of the field that examines (rather than merely instantiating) the tension of Formalism/Idealism provide into the history of literary scholarship which customarily is divided into separate schools (literary evolutionism, Russian Formalism, Czech and French structuralism, New Criticism)? In what ways may the dilemmas of the age of the “splendeurs et misères” of comparative literature reflect on the discipline’s recent agendas?

  L’Europe fait débat. Cette évidence s’impose et se trouve renforcée par un certain nombre d’événements récents, en Ukraine, en Grèce, en Espagne, mais aussi par des proclamations critiques dans bon nombre d’États membres, en opposition à la valorisation de la construction européenne et des espoirs qu’elle porte. Un inventaire comparé des qualités qui sont prêtées à l’Europe et des maux dont elle est jugée responsable serait toujours en retard d’une lecture, d’un discours, d’une diatribe. D’ailleurs l’heure n’est pas au bilan. Parce que sa mission réside aussi dans la participation au débat sociétal éclairé et argumenté, la MESHS est fière de consacrer son Printemps des sciences humaines et sociales à l’exploration de diverses facettes de l’Europe. Un programme de conférences propose des variations autour d’une interrogation essentielle – qui relève de notre essence et qui, à ce titre, nous est primordiale : « comment peut-on (ne pas) être européen? ».
