    The Thinking of the Image

Interdisciplinary approaches to imagery and imagination

What shall we call an “image”? Is it that from which knowledge proceeds or that which anticipates knowledge? Is image something only able to be recognised as object of thinking or it shows per se, in its polysemy and equivocal constitution, a deep, still unexplored generative form of thinking? From the point of view of the understanding of the digital age, where we entered in, to a strong consideration of the new frontiers of science, knowledge, and philosophy and from here up to societal and cultural dimensions, the thinking of the image still remain an enigma. The aim of the international conference is, perhaps for the first time, to study and to explore in a genuine interdisciplinary approach the multiversal horizon of human imagery and, in particular its constructive, generative capacity of building a world-meaning.

Anthropology and Social Movements Network Workshop

This two-days workshop’s theme will be “Social Movements and Citizenship”, and will have a panel discussion devoted to “E. Isin and Political Anthropology”. When conducted under the umbrella of ‘citizenship’, a significative amount of the anthropological research rests on premises which derive from philosophical works, and a significant part on Engin Isin’s theory of “Acts of citizenship”. The working hypothesis for this proposal is that many anthropologists interested by social movements, activism, “ordinary politicization” and micro-politics use Engin Isin’s notion of “acts of citizenship” and, in doing so, put to work its underlying normativities on which relies the theory’s conception of citizenship.

Science, Technology and Nationalism in India

Although the question of nationalism in India has been of interest to many social science scholars, the relationship between science and nationalism has seldom been discussed in an in-depth manner. STS perspectives and debates allow a framework that investigates the pivotal role and position of science and technology in the realization of state policies in India through several technoscientific projects and illustrates how deeply it is enmeshed within the larger political and social goals of national growth and development. Therefore, we would like to investigate the role science and technology play in these imbrications, the challenges they pose, and how these new assemblages reconfigure power relations between the Global North and the Global South within India, between States and markets.

Careers in politics, politics as a career

Developments in 19th and early 20th century Europe

During the nineteenth century, the field of European politics witnessed a host of significant changes, prominent among them being the increasing tendency towards its professionalization. Against the backdrop of major social and cultural shifts, politics ceased to be exclusively regarded as the traditional elite’s ‘duty of honor’ and opened its doors, first to the middle class and then, with the extension of the franchise, to lower social and professional strata. The aim of our workshop is to follow how politics became not only a stand-alone profession, but also part and parcel of careers in other professional fields during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. We are interested in the factors underlying this process, in how it manifested in different European spaces and under different historical conditions, as well as in its outcomes and societal impact.

The Stuff of Tradition: Materiality and Media in Folklore Studies

In the forthcoming 11th international conference of Young folklorists, we seek to examine the complex relationship of folklore studies with materiality by juxtaposing it with recent re-orientations to media and (re)mediation. The conference aims to explore various materialities inherent to our data and methodology – whether obvious or ambiguous – and rethink their position in our field. We invite scholars to discuss both academic and vernacular notions on the transmission of tradition and its social and material embeddedness. We also encourage methodological discussion on how folklore scholars are themselves bound by various (new) media and technologies of documentation, archiving, and presentation.

Religion in higher educational institutions in Africa and beyond

(Re)Conversion, Power, and Authority from a comparative perspective

Religious diversity is a feature of contemporary Sub-Saharan Africa and the outcome of many dynamic socio-historical processes. Over the past centuries, Christianity and Islam in particular, claimed a significant influence on social, political and even economic interactions across the continent. While trade, missions, migrations, and demographic growth imposed new forms of religious cohabitation, being religious and displaying it has become prevalent in many parts of the continent. This has affected the status of religiosity in private and public domains, has shaped modes of belonging, power relations, and ultimately how people interact, especially in multi-religious settings.

Doing Fieldwork in Centres of Power

    The Example of Deliberative Bodies

The aim of this call is to gather contributions in order to publish an edited volume on the methodological and epistemological challenges specifically posed by the practice of fieldwork in centres of power. The ambition is to draw on the experience of researchers who have already been confronted with these issues in order to offer examples, paths for reflection and keys to researchers in anthropology, sociology and political science who would like to venture into them in their turn, in order to help them grasp the challenges they pose and adjust their fieldwork practices to respond to them. To narrow the perspective as much as to emphasize a form of power centre that is now widespread, deliberative assemblies are taken as a case study. The latter bring together institutions with different reasons for being (e.g. political, legal or religious) and their scale (local, national or international).

Political Mobilization in the US: New Stakes and Evolutions

The objective of this panel is to compare the various social mobilizations that took place in Africa during the years 1956-1958 and which arguably constitute a historical watershed. The main aim of the panel is not the making of an abstract comparative analysis, but the analysis, based on the testimonial material collected, of how the memory of these events has been structured over time. Moreover, we are interested in understanding what the impacts of these social movements were on the structuring of states and what continuities can be found between the mobilizations of that period and the ary social mobilizations that have shaken the continent in the last ten years, from the ‘Arab Spring’ of 2011 onwards.
