  Folger Institute Fellowships

  Long-term, short-term and artistic Fellowships (2024-2025)

  Each year the Folger Institute awards research fellowships to create a high-powered, multidisciplinary community of inquiry. This community of researchers may come from different fields, and their projects may find different kinds of expression. But our researchers share cognate interests in the history and literature, art and performance, philosophy, religion, and politics of the early modern world. The Folger Institute at the Folger Shakespeare Library offers long-term fellowships for scholarly research and short-term fellowships for both scholarly and artistic research. For the 2024-25 year, applicants may request virtual, onsite, or hybrid residencies.

  Les dimensions transnationales de l’activisme dans la culture contemporaine du livre

  A is for Activist est le titre d’un livre pour enfants à succès publié en 2013 par Innosanto Nagara. Ce petit livre cartonné véhicule un message fort : les livres peuvent être des catalyseurs de changement. Le monde de l’édition a tantôt facilité, tantôt entravé le progrès politique et social dans divers contextes internationaux. L’activisme en édition a certainement une dimension transnationale : si les facteurs nationaux et identitaires doivent être pris en compte, reste qu’ils s’inscrivent dans un réseau transnational présentant des inégalités de pouvoir et de « capital littéraire » (Casanova 2004). Ce numéro spécial puise son inspiration dans « l’activisme imprimé » qui s’est développé dans le long XX^e siècle (Schreiber 2013) pour proposer une réflexion sur l’activisme qui a cours aujourd’hui dans l’industrie de l’édition, et sur les recherches qui s’y rapportent.

  How do we globalize the long eighteenth century?

  Quelle globalisation pour le long XVIIIe siècle ?

  Every student of the 17th or 18th century encounters in his or her own way the global historical dimensions of the more or less ‘domestic’ (provincial, national) subject being addressed. For decades, perhaps, many of us ignored these ramifications, which among other things were hard to treat because we are generally hardpressed to bring to such subjects the kind of specialized knowledge we are used to. (There are of course exceptions, involving colleagues who consciously adopt a global approach, e.g. Atlantic studies, though even these are no doubt truncated in different ways.) In all, the global was not an ‘aporia’ of our studies, so much as something more or less difficult to draw into the discussion and, in that sense, an ‘impensé’.
