Appel à contribution - Histoire
This international conference wants to reflect on the interaction between local agents and the institutional State Building policies between the 17th and the 19th Centuries. The construction of the Modern State, far from being a top-down vertical process, has consisted of a debate, often tense - if not adverse - between the interests of local communities and the State apparatus or raison d'état. In this way, the aim is to achieve a much more complete knowledge of the construction of the Modern State based on the study of the local sphere. The conference presented here is undoubtedly boldly conceived: to bring together marginal orisolated aspects and intertwine them to revisit specific historiographical hypotheses.

Dynamics of Belonging: Exploring Home and Homeland in Scandinavia and the Baltic Sea Region
The 15th Annual International Conference on Baltic and Nordic Studies
In reflecting on the notion of home, individuals in both the Scandinavia and Baltic Sea Region engage in a multifaceted introspection. Whether one envisions home as a microregion, encapsulating the unique landscapes and cultural tapestries of Scandinavia or the Baltic Sea Region, or defines it on a national scale, the discourse expands to include the intricate layers of personal and collective identity. This contemplative journey involves both longstanding inhabitants and newcomers, prompting a profound meditation on the concepts of home, homeland, homelessness, or a state of being without a defined nation. This conference aims to delve into the nuanced dimensions of cultural identity, sustainability, connectivity, migration, security, education, innovation, and artistic expression within the captivating landscapes of Scandinavia and the Baltic Sea Region.

Four PhD positions (part-time: 65%) are offered from the spring 2024 in the framework of the international research project “The Aggressor: Self-perception and External Perception of an Actor Between Nations”. The interdisciplinary project investigates the identity-forming construction of national enemy images across Europe, which are shaped by aggressors from neighboring countries. The project examines the dynamics of personalization of such enemy imagery, with special attention to concrete historical figures. It comparatively researches and systematizes the perception and interpretation of concrete enemies as aggressors based on historical case studies, focusing on their discursive construction and changing significance in the politics of memory.

How New Migration Governance Changed the World in the Long 1970s
The conference “The Global Migration Turn: How New Migration Governance Changed the World in the Long 1970s” examines the radical transformation in mobility and migration patterns and policies that occurred between the late 1960s and early 1980s. It focuses on the shift from active immigration policies to more restrictive stances in North America and Western Europe and explores the causes and consequences. Themes include changing immigration policies, refugee issues, and the role of international organisations. By bringing together scholars across disciplines, the conference aims to bring fresh, ground-breaking perspectives to the study of postwar global history. We aim to decipher the transformations that took place during the extensive period of the 1970s, which shaped migration as a globally prominent issue, particularly between an expanding West and the rest of the world.

The Contribution of Women to International Law and International Relations: between War and Peace
Third Global Online Congress on International Relations and International Law of the European University of Valencia
More than 20 years ago, UN Security Council Resolution 1325 (2000) underlined the fact that women play a key role in promoting peace, security, development, and human rights. States were invited to ensure that women are better represented at all levels of decision-making processes in national, regional, and international institutions and mechanisms for the prevention, management, and resolution of conflicts. The aim of the congress is the analyze of women’s contributions to the areas of international relations and international law in the context of war and peace processes, both from a general approach and illustrated in specific political and legal areas.

Appel à contribution - Histoire
This workshop seeks to explore how different methodological approaches to international and transnational organisations can bring new histories into view. Rather than approaching international and transnational organisations from a strictly institutional point of view, we, instead, wonder how these organisations and their archives can become the basis for telling other, local, regional or international, stories that shift the focus to the broader context in which these organisations operated. By going beyond the institutional histories the workshop probes to re-evaluate the historiographical position of these organisations, while maintaining a clear view of the historian’s placement, challenges and limits.

Migration within the EU Context seen through a multi-disciplinary and plurilinguistic view
The purpose of the Conference is to analyse and deepen, also from a comparative perspective, the way in which, in the 21st century, language and legislations in the migration perspective have become almost indivisible, as one influences the other on a rather deep level.

The European space. Geo-economic balances and State powers in the long run
In the construction of the European space(s) a crucial role has been played by economic actors and relations, which often overpass national borders and intertwin with the nature and roles of political powers and national States. Even well before the last globalization (or re-globalization), traditional government systems were pressed by the internationalization of economies: by centrifugal pushes, the need for external resources, or the emergence of new actors on the international stage in economic, technical, and social fields, that have increasingly influenced both the private and the public life. In more recent times, then, a new institutional framework developed at the supranational, European, level getting new functions and involving actors, such as trade unions, charities, business interests, scientific institutions, and churches, reinforcing the dynamics of cooperation, integration, and convergence beyond national borders.

Working with partners in the UK, Spain, and Norway, the aim of the project is to explore the impacts of industrial patronage – with a particular focus on the ethical dimensions of this relationship – on European museums of science and industry in both comparative and historical context. The project will compare insights drawn from a wide spread of historical case studies with a range of contemporary workshops exploring the ethics of industrial patronage. This position is based at AMU’s Humanities Faculty in Aix-en-Provence. The successful candidate will carry out research in archives in France and Britain while also participating in events organised by the various partners.

Violence and Conflict in Alexandre Kojève’s works
“Philosophical Journal of Conflict and Violence” - Special Issue
Alexandre Kojève is well known for having initiated a whole generation of intellectuals into a certain reading of Hegel. From the claim that the struggle for recognition must be necessarily a “bloody” one to the assessment that the replacement of those elites whose authority has expired may call for their annihilation, not to mention his equation of biological “death” with human freedom or his interpretation of revolutionary terror as a pedagogical tool to bring forth the perfect citizen of the post-historical age, Kojève´s corpus offers not few topics in which to ground such a reexamination. The special issue of Philosophical Journal of Conflict and Violence (PJCV) seeks cutting-age articles from contributors which openly explore the aforementioned topics as well as others along the same lines.

European Energy Shortages during the Short Coal Age (1860-1960)
The winter of 2022-2023 in Europe may become the harshest since 1944 due to fuel and electricity scarcity. This is an obvious moment for revisiting historical energy shortages. The proposed workshop will target the period of repeated fuel shortages in Europe from roughly 1860 to 1960 – the century during which coal supplied more than 50 % of all energy in Europe.

A game of states? Sport and international politics
Eracle Call for Papers Vol. 6 (2023)
In recent years, the increasing fragmentation of the international system, linked to rising China-US tensions, the emergence of populist movements, the consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic and the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, casts further complexity and uncertainty on international sport, calling for renewed scholarly attention and inquiry. Against this backdrop, we invite scholars of sport as a social phenomenon and institution – historians, sociologists, political scientists, International Relations and Media and Communications scholars – to submit proposals addressing the multifaceted nexus between sport and international politics.

Series of lectures by Perry Anderson
Few attributes are more important to the European Union than that of Rechtsstaat. The connotations of the term are both internal and external: it can refer either to the supremacy of law within its own borders, or to its respect for international law beyond them. Historically, the “law of nations”, as it was originally called, predates the jurisprudence of the Union, a relatively recent creation, by many centuries. At its centre lay a concern with the regulation of armed conflicts between peoples and States: relationships of power traditionally settled by war. What is the bearing of these on a contemporary political system priding itself on its commitment to peace? This series of lectures will look, in turn, at the origins and evolution of the law of nations in Europe; at the origins and nature of law within a Union that defines itself as neither national nor international; at the kinds and results of the ensuing statecraft and democratic will-formation; and in conclusion, at the historical juncture of the Union at the time of war in Ukraine.
