Narratives and the Social Sciences
Interdisciplinary Perspectives
Storytelling is a human practice that characterizes existence as a whole, responding to educational, social and cultural needs: from memory-making to establishing of relationships, from sharing experiences to forming a self-image, from learning to entertaining. If culture is our toolbox, then storytelling characterizes our way of using these tools to give shape and meaning to the disorder of experiences, and to present our actions as individual and social actors. In everyday life, we are all storytellers and make use of implicit narratives in one way or another. The perspective adopted for this International conference aims to highlight every possible side of this topic. Anthropologists, sociologists, literary and film critics, semiologists, linguists, economists, aesthetics and image scholars, cultural studies experts and geographers are invited to present their work.

Le innumerevoli declinazioni del rapporto tra storia e progetto hanno segnato la cultura architettonica italiana del secondo Novecento, e sono state l’elemento della sua riconoscibilità sulla scena internazionale. Il convegno intende esplorare gli scambi, le tangenze, le sovrapposizioni e gli attriti tra i progettisti – dell’oggetto architettonico quanto della città e del territorio – e gli storici dell’architettura nel contesto culturale, politico, economico e sociale dell’Italia del secondo Novecento.

Les deux journées prévues visent à nourrir la réflexion de nouvelles contributions interdisciplinaires sur les possibles applications de l’histoire environnementale dans le champ des études urbaines et paysagères, ainsi que de la conservation et de l’architecture. L’objectif est d’ouvrir des pistes de recherche conjointe entre l’Italie, la France et d’autres pays, dans la perspective de publications collectives et nouvelles occasions de rencontre.

People and Cultures of the World
The first edition of the International Conference Peoples and Cultures of the World, organized in 2019, was an important opportunity to focus on conceptual definitions and critical aspects concerning identity formations. In this second edition, we want to deepen our previous reflection and consider new topics. For example, is it still possible today to speak of cultures that are somehow homogeneous and spatially circumscribed? Or, instead, is it more appropriate to overturn these assumptions and overall deconstruct the concepts of culture and space? How is it possible to study various cultural dynamics in a world where Identity and Otherness are not only organized in terms of generalized proximity or distance, but also according to overlapping global and local forms? To this respect, what is the position of social scientists regarding individual, subjective and processual experiences? To what extent do “subjective” or “objective” approaches contribute to the result of the research and to the formalization of the process?

XXVe séminaire d’histoire de l’art Vénitien (2022)
Née modestement de la rencontre du sable et de l’eau, Venise a crû, en un miracle, jusqu’à devenir au fil du temps « le plus prodigieux événement urbanistique existant sur terre » (Le Corbusier). Cet essaim d’édifices posés en îlots compose aussi un mirage de pierre tant la cité de bâtisseurs s’est heurtée à l’éloignement de toute bonne carrière de pierre, obligeant à recourir à la pierre plutôt en parement sur des structures de briques, et à se tourner naturellement vers le remploi de pierres d’anciens monuments. Étudier les Pierres de Venise (1851), c’est donc revenir sur l’histoire d’un défi constructif et architectural, depuis la quête et l’acheminement des matériaux, des ruines d’Altino aux carrières d’Istrie, et l’organisation des métiers lapidaires (tagiapiera, scultori, terrazzieri), jusqu’à la réalisation des façades, ponts, puits, margelles, escaliers…

2020 has shown us that we live in a fragile and isolated society. Now is the time to re-establish relationships towards a more convivial ground(s): we propose to participate in this movement through architecture, urban and territorial planning, and design. Ground(s) is rich and polysemic notion that encloses both the tangible and intangible. Ground(s) is an essential and non-renewable component of our natural capital that do not only contribute to our basic human needs but are also key component of our sense of belonging and heritage. The ground(s) constitutes the place where communities grow and leave their imprint. In this respect, they can also function as a medium to shape, establish and strengthen relationships.

Les dimensions sociales de la cartographie cognitive
Les représentations cognitives de l’espace géographique sont très souvent étudiées dans le but de mieux comprendre la manière dont les individus résolvent les problèmes spatiaux du quotidien auxquels ils peuvent être confrontés. Les études sur les dimensions sociales de ces représentations cognitives de l’espace ont débuté modestement dès le milieu des années 1970. Aujourd’hui, les analyses sur les dimensions sociales de la cognition spatiale ne sont pas pour autant unifiées. Or tous ces objets analysés sous le prisme de la socialisation devraient également permettre d’apporter quelques éléments de compréhension sur la cartographie cognitive. Le réseau Cartotête s’est donné pour objectif d’explorer ces dimensions sociales qui participent à la construction des représentations cognitives de l’espace.

Il Dipartimento di Storia, Disegno e Restauro dell'architettura (DSDRA) della Sapienza, Università di Roma, bandisce una call for papers per selezionare i contributi del convegno internazionale “Forme dell’abitare a Roma. Echi dell’antico nell’architettura del primo Novecento”, che si terrà il 11 e 12 Novembre 2021 a Roma. Il convegno intende focalizzare l’attenzione sul tema dell'architettura residenziale a Roma mettendo in relazione gli studi sulle tipologie e sul linguaggio architettonico dell'antichità con le esperienze dei primi decenni del Novecento, realizzate contestualmente allo sviluppo abitativo della Capitale.

PhD students from the XXXIV cycle of the joint PhD Programme in Historical, Geographical, Anthropological Studies (University of Padova, Ca' Foscari Venice, Verona) are happy to invite you to their conference, titled "Crises and Infrastructures: Responses to Change Between Materiality and Immateriality. A Dialogue Between Anthropology, Geography and History". We will be exploring the interactions between various examples of Crises and Infrastructural response, trying to push for an interdisciplinary dialogue. We aim to reflect not only on the role of infrastructures as means of problem-solving, but also on the varied outcomes of critical moments. Interdisciplinary perspectives
The conference aims to explore the relationships established between cinema and urban areas. We want to stress the connections woven between cities and cinema, films, fiction and documentaries – important unconventional sources for the understanding of social and cultural contexts. We intend to focus on the modalities used in films to tell stories – through images and speech – concerning cities, territories, and places, residents’ lives in relation to spaces, to buildings, to landscapes, as well as to its urban culture as a whole. The perspective we have chosen for this conference is interdisciplinary and cinema will be considered as a medium to be understood and interpreted in several, possibly comparative, ways.

La rénovation des bâtiments et des espaces de la ville comme politique urbaine, de l’Antiquité à nos jours
Partout dans Rome, les monuments sont couverts d’inscriptions, antiques ou modernes, qui ne rapportent pas uniquement le nom de leur constructeur, mais célèbrent leur restauration. À l’image de Sixte IV, les papes urbanistes du Quattrocento et du Cinquecento se sont présentés avant tout comme des restaurateurs, quand bien même ils modernisaient la ville. Bien avant la Renaissance, les empereurs antiques se voulaient déjà des reconstructeurs, tel Auguste réparant tous les temples délabrés de la ville. Rome semble être une ville qu’il faut sans cesse restaurer, reconstruire, faire renaître. Cette rencontre a pour but d’étudier comment, durant toute l’histoire de Rome, de l’Antiquité au XXIe siècle, les notions de restauration ou de reconstruction ont été à la fois un moteur de l’urbanisme romain, un programme politique des pouvoirs publics et un idéal partagé ou non par les différents acteurs de la ville.

This meeting aims to foster a discussion about the continuities and disruptions which have conditioned the multi-ethnic dimension of our cities. We would like to focus on the specificities of places and time in our millennial history that have produced both tangible and intangible cultural heritage (a heritage which today seems strongly under attack). We aim for a historical perspective – by drawing attention on well-documented case-studies offering comparative insights – without however forgetting to ask ourselves the meaning of our research in the troubled world we live in; without anachronisms, but also without hiding behind the pretext of specialisms, while in front of our eyes the Mediterranean world is more than ever a theatre of death, exclusion, suffering.

This meeting aims to foster a discussion about the continuities and disruptions which have conditioned the multi-ethnic dimension of Mediterranean cities. We would like to focus on the specificities of places and time in our millennial history that have produced both tangible and intangible cultural heritage. We would like to broaden the traditional horizons of our disciplines under the issues of our times, questioning the role of historical research and the forms of scientific communication nowadays, when old practices seem more challenged than ever by the overwhelming expansion of new technologies.

Habiter le mouvement, XVIe-XXIe siècle
L’atelier thématique a pour objet la relation entre mobilité et modes d’habiter l’espace, selon une perspective interdisciplinaire et de longue durée. Le choix de cette thématique puise ses racines dans plusieurs projets collectifs et recherches individuelles menées au sein de l’UMR TELEMME et de la MMSH. La notion d’habiter proposée dans cet atelier est comprise dans le sens le plus large du terme : « faire avec l’espace », qui ne se limite pas à celui de « résider stablement », mais qui est aussi synonyme de fréquenter, d’être dans un lieu pour des raisons diverses et triviales : travailler, s’amuser, se réfugier, s’abriter, se réunir, se promener, parcourir, boire et manger, etc.

EAUH 2018 Rome – Urban renewal and resilience cities in comparative perspective
La session veut explorer l'histoire des associations volontaires, se concentrant sur la période 1880-1940, et mettre à jour le rôle qui ont joué les mouvements civiques dans la construction d'une conscience commune fondée sur l'identité et la dimension mémorielle. Seront retenues les propositions qui s'intéressent à un des aspects suivants : les élites professionnelles locales ; les associations nationales et internationales comme arènes de l'engagement de la société civile ; les autorités locales.

Border towns and the resilience of frontiers in Early Modern cities
The session welcomes contributions that deal with questions of shifting borders and how these shifts impacted the political, social, economic or religious organization of a given city or cities in Europe. Papers may focus on questions of practice, concerning the resilience of local political elites and administrations or the local population. They may also deal with the contemporary considerations to change the space of both cities and states, political agendas, procedures to implement them and the 'instruments' to control these implementations.

La troisième édition de cet atelier doctoral sera l’occasion de reconsidérer la pluralité des modes de développement des études environnementales, qui se sont déployées à partir d’ancrage disciplinaires variés (environmental history, géohistoire, science studies, géographie historique, political ecology, sociologie, archéologie environnementale, anthropologie…). Parmi les thèmes de l’atelier doctoral : « Historiographies et écriture de l’histoire à l’épreuve de l’Anthropocène » ; « Échelle globale et environnements situés » ; « Les archives de la terre : traces, paysages et collections » ; « Matérialités et rapports à la terre ».
