  Terra Foundation Postdoctoral Research and Teaching Fellowship for American Art

  Endowed by a generous grant of the Terra Foundation, this two-year research and teaching fellowship in Paris offers a postdoctoral scholar the opportunity to pursue their own work, and teach at Université de Paris (ex-Diderot) and Université de Paris-Nanterre. The fellow will receive a $ 42,000 annual stipend (to cover all costs including travel, housing, visa, health insurance, research, and so on; to be disbursed in euros).

  Quand New-York regarde l’École de Paris (1930-1950)

  Réception, relectures, appropriations

  Le dialogue que choisit d’instaurer le musée de l’Orangerie entre le peintre de l’École de Paris Chaïm Soutine (1893–1943) et l’expressionniste abstrait américain Willem de Kooning (1904-1997), donne aux chercheurs l’occasion d’explorer la réponse de l’expressionnisme abstrait américain alors naissant, à l’art produit par les artistes européens installés à Paris pendant l’entre-deux guerres. Ce colloque ambitionne de reprendre les sources pour mieux comprendre cette histoire et incite les candidats à participer à un bilan de ce qui était visible de l’art européen aux États-Unis avant 1950. Il souhaite également s’interroger sur les conditions de la naissance de l’expressionnisme abstrait américain dans son rapport à la tradition figurative européenne et notamment française, dans le contexte spécifique de la Seconde Guerre mondiale.

  Dans l’atelier. Matières, formes et savoirs du travail artistique.

  L’atelier est le lieu par excellence du travail artistique. Il est à la fois un espace matériel, une unité de vie et un creuset des formes. Pourtant, il reste souvent un monde en soi aux yeux de la tradition historiographique, c’est-à-dire une unité close sur elle-même, qui recèle le secret du travail artistique en même temps qu’il le dissimule. En confrontant l’histoire de l’art aux autres sciences sociales et à l’expertise des sciences de la conservation et de la restauration, on interrogera les formes du travail collectif, la construction de la valeur, l’élaboration et la transmission de savoirs et de savoir-faire dans les pratiques artistiques.

  These grants provide support for publication projects on historical American art (pre-1980) that make a significant contribution to scholarship and have an international dimension. Projects may include translations of texts on American art; publications written by non-U.S. scholars or those with a significant number of non-U.S. contributors; and publications with a focused thesis exploring American art in an international context.
