    Narratives of Water

Flows, Routes, Crises in the Atlantic World

Our two-day conference, “Narratives of Water : Flows, Routes, Crises in the Atlantic World,” wishes to explore the multifaceted dimensions of water through literary texts (understood broadly to include also theatre plays, graphic novels, movies, TV series, video games, podcasts, and other cultural products). While Blue Humanities started out focusing primarily on oceans, we encourage scholars interested in submitting a contribution to expand the scope of their investigation also to other waterscapes, including freshwater bodies on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean, and to water-related atmospheric phenomena such as rain, snow, hail, and storms.

    Power struggles in popular music

International Congress French Association of American Studies “Power and empowerment”

For the last fifty years, scholars have routinely analyzed popular music as a site of resistance against the dominant social, political, and economic structures. Typically, the Birmingham Centre for Contemporary Cultural Studies (CCCS) founded in 1964 by Stuart Hall and Richard Hoggart explored, on the basis of the subcultural theory developed in the 1920s at the University of Chicago, the appropriation and transformation by working-class and middle-class youth of the commercial products thrown at them by the culture industry, claiming that “popular music is an integral node in the lifeworlds, collective identification, and resistance practices of young people” (Taylor 4). They also examined the “semiological guerilla warfare” (Eco) that resulted when, in turn, the cultural industries appropriated and commodified the sounds and practices released by subcultural youth and converted them into “an exceptionally profitable commodity” (Drake 3).

Sex (Mis)Education in the English-Speaking World

    Historical, Literary and Socio-political Perspectives

This call for papers seeks contributions that will engage with the competing forms of formal and informal sex education as they pertain to the English-speaking world with a special focus on English speaking societies from the Indian ocean. Our aim is to propose varied, innovative and interdisciplinary approaches to the broad question of sex education, welcoming papers from historians, linguists, literary critics, sociologists, specialists in gender studies and others. Keeping in mind Foucault’s notion that sex is both hyper visible and taboo, we aim at providing in-depth discussions which will help better understand both formal and informal sex education taking into account the fact that sex education is fraught with cultural tensions and political feuds.

    New Monuments

Iconoclasm, Reenactments, and Alternative Commemorations in the United States since 2000

As demonstrated by Wendy Bellion’s scholarship, iconoclasm lies at the foundation of the United States. Yet Bellion also shows us that, rather than being sealed in the past, iconoclastic projects continue into the present. Iconoclastic destruction invariably entails creation—whether it is the construction of new monuments to replace the toppled ones, or the coalescence of a new community, movement, or nation. This conference seeks to bring together scholars interested in monuments and their destruction, public history and public art, historical reenactments, memory studies, and artistic practices across diverse media. We invite papers that evaluate recent commemorative projects, examine acts of iconoclasm and their aftermath, and study or propose novel approaches to representing historic events.

Retrophilia, Nostalgia, and the End of Pop Culture

The purpose of this publication is to question and re-evaluate Simon Reynold’s 2011 statement that “We live in a pop age gone loco for retro and crazy for commemoration. […] Could it be that the greatest danger to the future of our music culture is … its past?” One decade after Reynolds’s thought-provoking analysis, one may wonder whether this assumption is still relevant today. Can it be extended to other objects of pop culture (films, series, music, video-games, tatoo art, etc.)? In the Post-pandemic age, is pop culture still fixated on its (and our) past? Is this “addiction” to the past a regressive trend or, on the contrary, an opportunity to reassess modern history and re-evaluate its legacy and its representation in popular mass media? In terms of forms and formats, can something “radically new” emerge from nostalgia?

    Theories and Practices of Federalism

    Federalism Conference 2022

The Federalism conference is an international and hybrid conference that seeks to explore one the one hand, normative and historical theories of federalism and, on the other hand, investigate federal practices based primarily on case studies from Asia. With many countries opting for a federal structure of the government, federalism has now become a popular research topic among political scientists and constitutional scholars, leading to the burgeoning of centers and research projects at the international level. Federal ideas and the reality of existing federal states cannot be sharply divided. A comprehensive analysis of institutional philosophical roots can thus help us to further a comprehensive understanding of federal institutions as well as design appropriate analytical tools for investigating elements of multilevel governance systems.

Nouveaux mondes, anciens mondes, mondes perdus

Environmental Social Governance (ESG): Major Mover Towards Sustainable Energy Future

5th Annual North American Environment, Energy, & Natural Resources Conference

Even as the world shut down in 2020 from covid-19, ESG (Environmental Social and Governance) investing and principles accelerated their domination of the operation of and investment in the private sector.  These accelerating trends came despite initial fears that the COVID crisis would slow consideration of ESG.  In fact, ESG investments outperformed the broader market, and ESG related projects can command a premium in investment and lender interest. Historic fossil fuel emitters are not exempt.  In a two month span in early 2021, several large legacy oil companies indicated an intent to become carbon neutral and to accelerate diversification into renewable energies.

Time at the Turn of the Twentieth Century in American-British Philosophy

Around the turn of the twentieth century, time became a major focus of American-British philosophy. Against a broadly Kantian-Hegelian backdrop, philosophers began developing new questions and theories about time. Shadworth Hodgson argued humans perceive a ‘specious present’, a short duration rather than an infinitesimally small one; this view was further developed by Mary Calkins and William James. J. M. E. McTaggart advanced a new argument for the unreality of time. A. N. Whitehead made time the foundation of his process philosophy. This event brings together philosophers from Europe and North America exploring this period that was to become defining for the contours of twentieth-century English-speaking philosophy of time. The event will deliberately be scheduled to be compatible with European and North American time zones.

Political Mobilization in the US: New Stakes and Evolutions

    Still on the Map!

« Still on the Map!
