Applying Qualitative Research Methods to Science and Management

The book is a collection of qualitative research themes and methods used by researchers and practitioners in science and management. The concepts include methods and methodologies applied to qualitative research in a variety of contexts. Each concept deserves a separate chapter written by a researcher or practitioner with extensive experience in the field. The book aims to provide students and practitioners with an overview of the issues involved in qualitative research, based on the most recent academic research. It presents ground-breaking research by leading academics and field experts from around the world. It can serve as a theoretical and conceptual foundation for researchers interested in qualitative issues, and for scientists wishing to gain a business, political or industrial perspective in relation to the various themes of qualitative investigation and analysis.

Individual and Collective Issues in the History and Philosophy of Economics

Workshop organized prior to the 7th “International Conference Economics and Philosophy”

From the individual to the collective level, is there an insurmountable step ? The categories of “individual” and “collective” can be useful to shed light on the objects of study in economic methodology and the history of economic thought. Whether it is for policy-design or for scientific claims, can one start from the individual level to deduce policies or scientific claims at the collective level ? Can we explain macro-level phenomena simply by looking at their micro-foundations ? The aim of this workshop will be to analyze how these relations shape economics as a scientific field. We, thus, encourage proposals that aim to interrogate the individual among the collective – as in the micro-foundation of macroeconomics models for instance – and vice versa the collective among the individual – as in the performativity of economic theories to the individual for instance. The aim of this workshop is to bring together young researchers to question the lenses by which one can analyze economics, philosophy of economics and history of economic thought.

This panel, proposed by the European Association of Social Anthropologists (EASA) network “Anthropology and Social Movements”, is part of an ongoing discussion about how a political anthropology perspective on citizenship can provide new ways of practicing anthropology without losing the politic(s) of the fieldwork when looking for “alternatives”.

    Ecologizing Economics

Reflexivity, Methods and Interdisciplinarity in the Age of Anthropocene

In the context of a multidimensional ecological crisis, economic analysis is challenged to adapt its methods so that it can remain relevant to contemporary issues. In particular, calls to strengthen the consideration of biogeophysical dynamics are becoming more and more pressing. The aim of this workshop is to bring together young researchers to question the place of economics in the ecosystem of disciplines in the context of ecological emergency. To help us in our reflection, we will have the pleasure to welcome prof. Michiru Nagatsu from the Helsinki Institute of Sustainability Science. We encourage young scholars (widely defined) researching in economics, philosophy, sociology, history of economic thought or any related discipline to apply to this methodological workshop, either as a speaker or as a simple participant.

Framing the Virtual: New Technologies and Immersive Exhibitions

As our lives and planet continue to be shaped by complex technological materials, systems and processes, the practices of technology and media-engaged artists are vital to understanding what lies behind the ‘front end’ of our contemporary digital condition. Although diverse in scope, new materialist philosophies share a common approach to flat ontologies that invite thinking across human, nonhuman, virtual and material actors connected via networks of agency, affect, power and desire. These terms provide a powerful way to counter the immaterial malaise as well as the disconnect between our planet and technological existence.

Microbes and Microbiology: towards new stories?

What are the different ways in which humanities describe microbiology, this multifaceted and complex object that, for more than a century, has given rise to various investigations, whether in the context of national histories, institutional studies, or scientific controversies? This webinar proposes to make an inventory of contemporary research in humanities on microbiology and to understand how this research has been transformed by the various “turns” in human and social sciences over the last decades - global turn, imperial turn, material turn, animal turn, to name but few. Beyond simple academic labels, what are, in concrete terms, the new questions, new objects, new methods and approaches currently shaping our understanding of the emergence of the science of microbes, and of the technical and social changes it has spawned until the present day?

The Society for Technology and Philosophy’s 2021 Technological Imaginaries Conference

Technologies are always more than the sum of their mechanical parts. Indeed, technologies are entangled in symbolic forms of a social and cultural nature. Technologies also contribute to the construction of new worldviews and new forms of life. Technological imaginaries are far more than phantasies detached from technological innovation. They are at the heart of innovation itself, of the invention as well as of the implementation and use of technology in our societies.

Is the concept of sustainability misleading?

    Mixed Perspectives
