    Mining Mobilities across the globe

Labour, Science, and Knowledge circulation in Mining (15th-21st century)

The fifth conference of the European Labour History Network (ELHN) will explore how mining mobility and knowledge circulation have played a pivotal role in extractive industries worldwide. The movement of workers, technologies, and knowledge has been mediated by state authorities, corporations, and subcontractors through alluring and forced forms of recruitment. Alongside these trajectories, men and women from neighbouring and distant territories moved to newly reopened mines to search for new deposits and improve their social and economic conditions.

European Energy Shortages during the Short Coal Age (1860-1960)

The winter of 2022-2023 in Europe may become the harshest since 1944 due to fuel and electricity scarcity. This is an obvious moment for revisiting historical energy shortages. The proposed workshop will target the period of repeated fuel shortages in Europe from roughly 1860 to 1960 – the century during which coal supplied more than 50 % of all energy in Europe.

Challenges for the new rurality in a changing world

7th International conference on Localized Agri-food Systems

During the last decades, Localized agri-food systems (SYAL) have become increasingly important as tools for farmers, rural firms and consumers to meet market challenges and satisfy the rising demand for "food with a farmers face". The potential contribution of localized agri-food systems to rural development by promoting economic development, social cohesion and counter-acting the demographic impact of agricultural modernization has also increased their political relevance. Previous research has addressed various aspects of the relationship between SYAL and geographical indications, as well as territorial, organizational and cultural issues, but there are still many unanswered questions and theoretical gaps to fill.

Political discourse is omnipresent in our societies since we have access to a never-ending stream of political messages through media, messages about how the outside world is governed or should be governed. Politics is basically about ideas, ideologies, visions, and arguments, conveyed by language, with which it is closely connected. It is difficult to study one aspect without taking the other into account. In other words, the different approaches (linguistics, discourse analysis, history, political and social sciences) are complementary to each other, as the starting point of analysis is different. Whereas linguistic and discourse analytical approaches have as starting point concrete textual elements and discourse practices (micro-level analyses), the political and social science approach often takes as its starting point society at a macro-structural level. Thus, while the latter gives a picture of general tendencies, the former highlights the practices of individual politicians and political parties.

Mainstream political parties and immigrants: discourses, politicization and participation

    IMISCOE Conference 2013 - Workshop 26

The workshop aims to fill existing gaps in the literature on immigrants and political parties. It also aims to consider the current context of economic crisis and retrenchment that the welfare state is playing in redefining existing discourses and practices of political parties as well as their linkages with immigrants and immigrant organisations. In order to advance these questions, it proposes to explore the relation between political parties and immigrants from three perspectives. The first one focuses on mainstream parties and their discourses and stances on immigration. The second one concentrates on parties as players in the politicization of immigration-related conflicts. Finally, the third one proposes to explore the dynamics of participation of immigrants in political parties.

    In Search of Peace

    Dialogues between theories and practices

The search for peace is longstanding. And yet, the concept remains elusive. Most probably the reason is simple, namely that peace is never fully achieved, it is not an end-point, but rather a constant process of negotiation among different actors regarding the terms of their relationships in a myriad of different arenas.

    Gardens of justice

    Critical legal conference 2012

The theme for this year’s Critical Legal Conference is “Gardens of Justice”. Although the theme may be interpreted in different ways, it suggests thinking about law and justice as a physical as well as a social environment, created for specific purposes, at a certain distance from society and yet as an integral part of it. The theme also invites you to think about justice as a concrete metaphor rather than an abstract concept. Just like any ordinary garden, legal institutions affect both people working in them and people who are just passing through their arrangements.
