  Early Islamic Agriculture and Water Management: Talking about a “Revolution”

  Second Ḥajar Online Workshop

  In the workshop organized by Hajar, three archaeological case studies which relate to agriculture and/or water management during Early Islam will be presented, followed by responses and a discussion. These will enable another examination of Andrew Watson’s arguments from the 1980s about an “Arab agricultural revolution” or “green revolution” - this time from an archaeological perspective.

  Configuring Monastic Architectural Settings: Early Medieval Experiments

  Fenestella - Inside Medieval Art, issue 3/2022

  Fenestella is a scholarly, multilingual, and peer-reviewed open access journal. Fenestella publishes scholarly papers on medieval art and architecture, between Late Antiquity and c. 1400, covering the Latin West, the Byzantine East and medieval Islam. We are now accepting proposals for the 2022 Thematic Issue: Configuring Monastic Architectural Settings: Early Medieval Experiments.

  Ancient mosques in their spatial context

  Mosques are one of the physical representations of Islam and of Muslim communities in the archaeological record. The workshop will present a number of archaeological case studies in the Levant, the Arabian Peninsula, Africa, and Spain between the seventh and the thirteenth centuries. Mosques will be introduced in relation to water systems and burials, to earlier and later structures, and to specific types of settlements. In particular, the workshop will treat the question of Islamization, the definitions of the term, and its validity. The event will also include launching a database for excavated mosques until the 9^th century in OpenContext.org and discuss methods and approaches for open data in archaeology.

  Pour la neuvième année consécutive, les rencontres internationales des doctorants du monde byzantin seront organisées à Paris les 7 et 8 octobre 2016. Elles ont pour objectif de rassembler les doctorants de toutes disciplines en rapport avec la civilisation byzantine afin de leur permettre d'exposer leurs recherches et de renforcer les liens entre les jeunes chercheurs. Toute contribution en rapport avec le monde byzantin ou post-byzantin est susceptible d'intéresser le comité d'organisation.

  James Zebedee, the "translatio" and the Jacobean pilgrimages

  7th International Colloquium Compostela

  The 7th International Colloquium Compostela aims at analysing the myth of the "translatio" of the body of Saint James from Palestina to Santiago de Compostela and its impact in the historical construction of the Jacobean pilgrimages.  As in the former editions, focusing on an interdisciplinary approach, the Colloquium analyzes the state of the art in the archeological research of Palestinian and Compostela in the early centuries, the studies about the traditions of the translatio, the iconography and the literary and social impact of the "translatio" and the current reality of pilgrimages to Compostella.

Ces journées s'organisent en deux ateliers : « L'iconographie portuaire : formation et évolution » / « Les grands ports du Golfe à la période islamique : nouvelles données textuelles et archéologiques ».

  Les chroniques tardo-antiques et médiévales : perspectives croisées, Orient-Occident

  Cycle thématique de l'IRHT 2007-2008

  Le genre des chroniques connaît dans le monde méditerranéen un succès tout particulier et a été pratiqué pendant toute l’Antiquité tardive et le Moyen Âge, aussi bien dans les milieux chrétiens que musulmans. Mais c’est en réalité toute une palette de textes qui sont réunis sous le terme générique de chroniques, depuis les chroniques universelles jusqu’aux chronica minora, locales et concernées par des périodes courtes, voire de simples listes chronologiques. C’est à l’étude de ces textes variés représentant une manière particulière d’écrire et de concevoir l’histoire qu’entend se consacrer ce cycle thématique.
