Appel à contribution - Langage
Issue of “Open Cultural Studies”
Migration and translation are distant but closely related phenomena that understand migration discursively as mobility of texts, international transfer of knowledge and transformation in the field of cultural literacy. Migration may be defined as translation, in line with Salman Rushdie’s proposal that migrants are “translated beings” (Rushdie, 1983). As a matter of fact, it would be easy to prove that they are constantly engaged in “translating and explaining themselves.”

“Literary Offenses” and Other Contentious Matter
This one-day conference will address the subject of controversial or polemical texts such as reviews, essays, letters, prefaces and/or postfaces published between 1800 and 1900 in Britain and the United States. It seeks to open fresh approaches to controversies or polemics by focusing on literature and the literary aspects of these questions. Indeed, if controversy can be defined as a debate between two or more parties with different viewpoints before an audience, studies have mainly come from the fields of social sciences and science studies, with some interest in rhetoric and/or argumentation. However, literary controversies are as important as scientific ones for the constitution of the public, democratic debate as it was shaped in Britain and in the U.S. in the nineteenth century. Controversies and polemics contributed to legitimizing some literary genres; they gave publicity to new or avant-garde authors; they redefined the content and contours of the public debate.

Adaptation and Resilience to Droughts
Historical Perspectives in Europe and beyond
This symposium will give us the chance of exploring the topic of historical droughts whose contributions in the international research community are still very diffuse. It aims to bring together researchers working on historical droughts mainly in Europe. Extreme events throughout history that challenge the reactive capacity (resilience and adaptation) of societies will be highlighted. The symposium will bring to light information provided by a large diversity of narrative sources. Lying at the crossroads between environmental history, historical climatology, geography and hydrology, it will provide an international and interdisciplinary scope.

Colloque - Époque contemporaine
European Society for Nineteenth-Century Art Conference
This year’s two-day international ESNA conference intends to study the various and complex relations between food, the experience of eating, and nineteenth-century art. Although food has always been a subject in the arts, the modes of production, distribution and consumption of nourishment changed radically during the course of the nineteenth century. Food decisively entered the public sphere and consciousness in cities where new sites of consumption in the form of mouth-watering food shops and restaurants emerged. At the same time food became a marker of national identity, of gender identity, of “taste”, of affluence, and of social and economic status.

History, Memory and Reshaping Identity in Post-Communist Literatures
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture Journal, special issue, December 2017
This volume is intended for both scholars and a general readership interested in contemporary aspects of post-communist literatures from East-Central Europe which witness a special relation between History, Memory and reshaped identity (be it personal or collective). Papers are invited to analyze strategies of remembering communism in different types of discourse, from autobiographical recollections to collective representations which re-define the post-traumatic status of the Eastern intellectuals in relation to the "rediscovered" West and their transition dilemmas.

Tourism in Indonesia and Southern Countries
A vector of sustainable development?
The objective of the conference is to analyze the effect of tourism, questioning more specifically in this second edition its potential for becoming a vector of sustainable development, understood in its more general sense. Within this framework, we will question its economic impact, as well as its social effects, on Indonesia and Southern countries. We are interested in knowing how extra income is redistributed to the local population and whether it affects, or on the contrary, strengthens the traditional organizations of the communities, bringing new actors, investors, decision-makers in the traditional social organization.
