    Agency and Perception

The Roma in East Central Europe

Much scholarly attention has been paid to visible forms of historical anti-Ziganism/anti-Gypsyism/anti-Roma racism, hostility, discrimination, hate crime, harassment, and racial violence in east central Europe. Significantly less scholarly attention has been paid to the ways in which historical invisible prejudice and anti-Roma perceptions were constructed and shaped educational, health, employment, and housing policies targeted at and/or impacting Roma. This symposium Agency and Perception: The Roma in East Central Europe focuses on the intricate relationship between perception and agency through Roma-targeted and related policy discourses and practices, which were informed by specific academic knowledge and disciplinary lenses.

The future of science: scientific archives and new research

The testimonial value of scientific archives cannot be denied: archives help historians and particularly historians of science retrace science’s history, its place in society, past and future. But what other direct value could be assigned to old scientific archives? Could scientific archives be used for producing new scientific results, either in their discipline or in another? Could they be used for informing new artistic or societal work or bring about technological innovations ? This conference aims to consider examples of reuses of scientific material for producing new results.

European Energy Shortages during the Short Coal Age (1860-1960)

The winter of 2022-2023 in Europe may become the harshest since 1944 due to fuel and electricity scarcity. This is an obvious moment for revisiting historical energy shortages. The proposed workshop will target the period of repeated fuel shortages in Europe from roughly 1860 to 1960 – the century during which coal supplied more than 50 % of all energy in Europe.

La transition vers les didactiques immersives

De solutions éducatives pendant le confinement de covid-19 à l’enseignement dans le métavers

Didactics, like any other fields of science, has embarked on a process of transformation that has been the product of the fourth industrial revolution. It has delivered most educational programmes to the student in an interactive way, ostensibly taking a cursive form in its relations with users regardless of the diversity of their educational field, while hiding a very complex form at the level of programming. We aim, through this international conference, to question the transition observed by the didactics of teaching, regardless of its scientific, literary or artistic field, to provide teacher-interactive lessons, as limiting the presentation of lessons to “PowerPoint” slides or PDF files uploaded on teaching platforms, no longer meets the requirements of the learner.

Tourism 3.0. Intangible cultural heritage at the heart of the tourist experience

    Diritto e Ritualità

The full online seminar “Diritto e Ritualità” 10-11 November 2021 will focus on questions of Greek law and ritual forms in the ancient world, investigated through the lens of anthropology. We will explore the relationship between rhetoric and law, the evidence of judicial practices in literary sources and some issues related to the analysis of specific epigraphic sources (defixiones and prayers for justice). In the second day, we will try to put some ritual forms of the ancient world into context. In particular, we will investigate the function of knucklebones in Greek sanctuaries and the relationship between the ludic dimension and the ritual one. Late antique adoratio will also be discussed in light of the most recent theories developed by Anthropology and Ritual Studies.

Spirituality, Healthcare and Social Movements in East Asia. A Transnational Perspective

The East Asian cultural sphere has figured prominently in recent collections of research on new religious movements, Theosophy and global therapeutic cultures, while it continues to attract the attention of scholars working on civil society and self-help movements. But, although we are often aware of the complex entanglements between these seemingly separate areas of interest, we seldom have the opportunity to discuss such entanglements in and beyond East Asia. At the same time, in the last twenty years, significant scholarship has been published in East Asia on this topic. This conference aims to offer such a chance by inviting academic contributions to reflect on the intertwined relationship between spirituality, healthcare and social movements in East Asia from a trans-national/local/cultural perspective. As a time of unprecedented changes and accelerated global interactions, our focus lies on the period between the nineteenth to the twentieth-first centuries.
