Heritage, Science, and Technologies for Sustainable Preservation

Cultural heritage is not just a testament to our past; it is a living testament to the diverse cultures and histories that enrich our global tapestry. Yet, it faces numerous challenges in the contemporary world, from natural disasters and climate change to urbanization and the pressures of globalization. Our conference embraces a multidisciplinary perspective, acknowledging that the preservation of cultural patrimony cannot be accomplished through isolated efforts. It calls for the convergence of expertise from diverse fields, from archaeology and conservation to law, technology and new technologies, management, marketing, and social sciences. By doing so, we reflect the spirit of our consortium, which is firmly rooted in the belief that innovative and sustainable practices are essential for the effective safeguarding of our rich cultural heritage.

Police Intelligence, from Local to Global. From 1750 to the Present-Day

The aim of this conference is to take a look at police intelligence, to highlight its specific characteristics and its role in the work of law enforcement agencies. It will thus aim to present new developments and consider new approaches in the history of the administrative management of information and, above all, in the history of the police. The conference will also aim to address the questions of the production and use of police intelligence, of the parties and tools involved in its development, and of the content that feeds it. To highlight these changes in the contexts and uses of intelligence, the conference will consider a lengthy timeline, from the middle of the eighteenth century to the present day. Finally, it will take a resolutely comparative and transnational approach.

Objects of Law in the Medieval and Early Modern Worlds

Materials and texts function in a variety of ways in legal contexts, they forge diplomatic ties, grant gifts of land, levy taxes, regulate markets, etc. The connection between the materiality of artefacts and the law are multiple, their very nature conveyed information, performed authority, and communicated authenticity. The conference Objects of Law proposes thinking more deeply about the artistic practices that shaped the materiality, iconography, and texts of legal objects in the medieval and early modern period. Objects of Law seeks dialogue between scholars working in art history, history, archaeology, legal history, and related disciplines that deal with legal objects.

Democratic Representation in and by International Organizations

The Armenian Genocide: New Interpretations and Cross-Disciplinary Conversations

The study of the Armenian genocide often remains confined to restricted circles of specialists and interdisciplinarity is too rarely promoted. And, although comparative research is praised, it is frequently reduced to the juxtaposition of case studies. Research on the Armenian genocide is now ready to address more cross-cutting issues and to fully contribute to broader discussions on mass violence. Therefore, this conference asks: how can the social sciences, memory studies, and genocide studies contribute to a broader understanding of the Armenian genocide and its aftermath? And reciprocally: what is the contribution of research on the Armenian genocide to our understanding of mass crimes and to the social sciences?

Natural Rights and Politics in the Early Modern Period

Despite the ubiquity of the idea of human rights in our political culture, and its strong presence in the work of political scientists, jurists and contemporary historians, scholarly interest in natural rights — the tradition from which human rights are drawn — remains sporadic and fragmentary. This interdisciplinary workshop aims to deepen and broaden our understanding of the political uses and development of natural rights in the Early Modern Period, in Europe, the Atlantic world and beyond. By interrogating the relationship between natural rights and politics, this will be an occasion not only to analyze natural rights as a theoretical concept, but also and above all to study the different uses of concepts drawn from natural rights in precise political contexts, the political projects they served, their relationship with republicanism, and the emergence and evolution of particular rights.

    Colloque - Europe

    Merchants, arts, luxury and beauty

The long-distance, large-scale luxury trade or the promotion of the arts by merchants are extremely important elements in the evolution of our contemporary societies. What were the legal and institutional strategies on the topic of the judicial history of commerce? Tax privileges, protection of individuals and property, are just a few examples of regulatory interventions in the European and extra-European luxury trade. The private legal sphere is no less interesting: contractual relations between individuals in this area, the regimes of pacts between parties, the value given to goods and merchandise in the identification of the price of obligations, are all aspects of fundamental importance for understanding the legal dynamics that have shaped European legal culture.

    Mapping violences

    EHESS Summer School 2023

By crossing different disciplinary, thematic and cultural approaches, the aim is to endeavor to map violence, to study practices, situations, experiences of violence and their arrangement in topographic, social and mental spaces. The objective is to favour the dialogue between different perspectives of research on violence and more particularly on extreme violence. Be it political violence, state violence, wars, guerrilla wars, revolutions, oppression, massacres, and domestic violence, since it is often -in these contexts- amplified, will also be broached. How are we to observe, define and analyse these violent phenomena? What are the methodological, epistemological and ethical questions specific to these particularly sensitive and fluid objects?

Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Climate and Biodiversity Crises

Historical evolutions, current realities, and future pathways for socio-ecological transformation

Over the past centuries, the industrialisation of Western societies gradually impacted nature, and environmental problems increased with globalisation during the last decades. As a consequence, we are now experiencing major crises which are linked with each other: biodiversity is disappearing faster and faster, and global warming is escalating, not only causing unprecedented damage to the Earth, but also unequally and unfairly affecting different parts of the world. In this context, our summer school proposes to bring together an interdisciplinary range of researchers interested in the various implications and interconnections of the climate crisis and the biodiversity crisis.

    Violent Turns: Sources, Interpretations, Responses

The aim of this international conference is to provide researchers with an interdisciplinary platform to investigate and debate the question of contemporary irruptions of political violence and to inquire into the different responses intended to counteract violence. When and why do individuals, groups, and societies come to believe that peaceful means and legal avenues of redress, including non-violent civil disobedience, are insufficient or improper to achieve a social or political goal and to view violent action as morally legitimate and necessary for change? Can one identify trends shaping recourse to violence by parts of the populace? What role does state violence play in the dialectic? When, if ever, is political violence legitimate? How can violence be averted?
