L’UCLouvain recrute un·e doctorant·e en philosophie ou en histoire de la philosophie. L’objectif principal de ce projet est de comparer la philosophie moderne de la Bildung et le paradigme contemporain de la Learning Society en analysant systématiquement leurs structures homologiques. Par cette comparaison, nous cherchons à exposer les mutations conceptuelles qui ont opéré, d’un paradigme à l’autre, sur l’idéal de l’autonomie éducative.

Elles partent du constat que, parmi les éléments de la modernité se trouvant en crise dans le monde contemporain, il est nécessaire de consacrer la juste attention philosophique à la notion d’individu et à ses transformations radicales. Face à cette crise, nous proposons d’explorer les interprétations et implications multiples qui émergent de la notion de « dividuel ».

Puissances du végéter dans la littérature et les arts des mondes francophones et anglophones (XIXe-XXIe siècle)
The aim of this international conference is to reflect on the active role of plants in texts and visual representations in the literature and arts of the anglophone and the francophone worlds from the nineteenth century to the present day. We will think about the aesthetic, political, and epistemological implications of this form of agency and analyse the way in which plants act upon and with the human world from an anthrodecentric perspective. We will look at how plants can organise or disorganise our world, call into question established truths, and shape power relations, including political ones.

Global Series: TV and the Political Imagination
This collective volume seeks to explore the vast potential of TV series and their role in shaping our moral and political perspectives on the world. Global Series: TV and the Political Imagination is part of the ERC Demoseries project, hosted by Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, and responds to Sandra Laugier’s call for taking TV series seriously as “a new form of education…[that is] both political and moral” (Laugier 2022). TV series have the capacity to reflect complex social and political realities and can serve as shared representations of moral reasoning and values, prompting viewers to engage in ethical reflection and philosophical inquiry. By examining a diverse range of TV series from across the globe, the volume aims to highlight their power to act as common reference points in shaping public discourse and conversation.

Natural Rights and Politics in the Early Modern Period
Despite the ubiquity of the idea of human rights in our political culture, and its strong presence in the work of political scientists, jurists and contemporary historians, scholarly interest in natural rights — the tradition from which human rights are drawn — remains sporadic and fragmentary. This interdisciplinary workshop aims to deepen and broaden our understanding of the political uses and development of natural rights in the Early Modern Period, in Europe, the Atlantic world and beyond. By interrogating the relationship between natural rights and politics, this will be an occasion not only to analyze natural rights as a theoretical concept, but also and above all to study the different uses of concepts drawn from natural rights in precise political contexts, the political projects they served, their relationship with republicanism, and the emergence and evolution of particular rights.

Revenons à la réalité ! Que ce soit en art ou en philosophie, ces dernières années ont été marquées par une véritable ruée vers le réel, sous des bannières telles que le réalisme spéculatif, le néo-matérialisme, la documentalité, l’éco-réalisme, la poétique spéculative ou l’esthétique orientée objet. On commence tout juste à entrevoir les abîmes qui séparent ces positions. Le workshop comparera diverses stratégies épistémiques et artistiques visant à saisir la nature évasive du réel, et s’efforcera de comprendre les raisons animant ce désir de toucher à la « chose en soi ». Si le seul point sur lequel ces différents réalismes semblent s’accorder est la nécessité de décentrer la perspective humaine, ne serait-ce pas la perspectivité elle-même qui pourrait fournir une nouvelle manière d’appréhender la réalité ?

Methodos issue 25/2025, “Mediaeval Latin Mathematics”, welcomes studies and editions of mathematical texts from the Latin Middle Ages, a field which has received comparatively less scholarly attention than its Arabic counterpart or, for that matter, other disciplines within the Latin traditions (such as logic and dialectic, for instance). Insofar as Mediaeval mathematics encompassed not only arithmetics and geometry but also astronomy, music, optics and mechanics, the call for papers is open to studies which concern themselves with all mediaeval texts which, while they belong to other disciplines as well (natural and moral philosophy, theology, logic, etc.), rely heavily on mathematical lore and practice.

In this roundtable, professors Jonathan Wolff (University of Oxford) and Avner de-Shalit (Hebrew University of Jerusalem) will discuss their work in progress, focused on the topic of urban injustices. Employing a methodological approach merging normative expertise with applied reflections, supported by data from interviews with over 180 people worldwide, Wolff and de-Shalit set out to conceptualize a city in which individuals relate to each other as equals.

Nous invitons les participant·es de ce colloque à repenser les puissances du végéter dans la littérature et les arts des mondes anglophones et francophones du XIXe siècle à nos jours. Il s’agira de réfléchir à la place et au rôle actifs du végétal dans les textes et les représentations, ainsi qu’aux enjeux épistémologiques, esthétiques et politiques qui y sont liés. Suivant une perspective anthropo-décentriste, nous réfléchirons à la façon dont le végétal agit avec/sur le monde des êtres humains, l’ordonne ou le désordonne, met en question les savoirs établis, et fait intervenir des rapports de force et de pouvoir, y compris politiques.

Que reste-t-il de ce projet esthétique dans un monde où la nature se révèle comme étant déjà intégralement « anthropisée » ? Que reste-t-il de la nature, lorsque celle-ci a perdu le statut de Grand Dehors ? Face à l’urgence climatique, d’autres politiques – mais aussi : esthétiques – de la nature sont nécessaires. Comment concevoir une nature qui n’est plus située au-delà de nous, mais qui nous traverse ? Comment penser, en retour, une nature déjà traversée par la récursivité, bref : par la technique ? Car la nature après la nature n’est peut-être rien d’autre que cela : une nature qui se découvre comme ayant toujours été nature seconde. Une nature en tant qu’art.

Violence and Conflict in Alexandre Kojève’s works

Alexandre Kojève is well known for having initiated a whole generation of intellectuals into a certain reading of Hegel. From the claim that the struggle for recognition must be necessarily a “bloody” one to the assessment that the replacement of those elites whose authority has expired may call for their annihilation, not to mention his equation of biological “death” with human freedom or his interpretation of revolutionary terror as a pedagogical tool to bring forth the perfect citizen of the post-historical age, Kojève´s corpus offers not few topics in which to ground such a reexamination. The special issue of Philosophical Journal of Conflict and Violence (PJCV) seeks cutting-age articles from contributors which openly explore the aforementioned topics as well as others along the same lines.

De la circulation d’œuvres écrites dans le contexte de salons littéraires au pouvoir qu’ont les images de capturer un mouvement, comment comprendre nos interactions avec nous-même, les autres et les médias sous formes de conversations qui soient à la fois centrées sur le(s) corp(s) et facilitées par ce(s) dernier(s) ? Nous encourageons les communications à traiter des sujets suivants : la construction d’un corpus, la relation entre texte et critique, les questions de voix, les corps qui parlent pour et par eux-mêmes, la lisibilité d’un corps racisé, sexué et/ou handicapé, la postérité d’œuvres d’art, l’héritage de traditions créatives, la construction d’archives, et les textes en tant que documents vivants. Enfin, comment comprendre nos propres interventions en tant que conversations corporelles à part entière ?

Rhythm is a central element in the creation of meaning in art, and its configuration is such that it requires a multi, inter and transdisciplinary approach. The difference of materials, procedures and events masks the resemblance of rhythmic phenomena that are similar in different arts and hides their identity or their homology. In the work of some scholars, the concepts do not seem to belong to a particular artistic discipline, being rather characteristic of the rhythmic phenomenon. The objective of this conference is to provide an instance for exchanging knowledge, concerns and aspirations for those who have been devoting themselves to the study of rhythm and artistic creation on the subject.
