Legacies of Encroachment(s) in French and Francophone literatures, arts, and medias

The reality of globalization, and its inherent movements and interactions of bodies, challenges the radical frame and geographies of the aforementioned concepts. The inevitability of the relation, in its materialisations as contact, conflict, and integration, highlights the thin lines between acknowledging, understanding, and trespassing boundaries in human relations to each other and to the systems that govern their lives. The idea of encroachment in thinking of the experiences of boundaries in human relations captures the inevitable obsession for trespassing. Regardless of its motivation, trespassing has an impact on the body that is transformative. Therefore, the effects of encroachment pervade the body in its relation to itself and its environment(s). In thinking about legacies of encroachments in French and Francophone literatures, we think of the legacies of this concept in literary practices, in thematic choices across geographies, and its transmedial expressions within and beyond the literary canon(s).

Empathy and the Aesthetics of Language

For three decades, the question of the role played by empathy in the aesthetic apprehension of language, and notably in the experience of literature, has been the topic of a growing number of studies. A joint project of the University of Parma, Aix-Marseille University and the University of Texas at Austin, this two-day webinar brings together thirteen experts – philosophers, literary theorists, neuroscientists, psychologists, historians – whose contributions will be published in two special issues of Texas Studies for Literature and Language (TSLL). Taken together, the talks proposed aim at offering an updated and encompassing discussion of recent, but also older research in the field. The webinar intends to address the question of empathy and the aesthetics of language from a cross-disciplinary and cross-methodological perspective, by giving room to both theoretical and empirical approaches and tackling the concept of empathy in all its semantic diversity.

The Agency of Plants in the Literature and the Arts of the French and English-Speaking Worlds (19th-21st century)

Puissances du végéter dans la littérature et les arts des mondes francophones et anglophones (XIXe-XXIe siècle)

The aim of this international conference is to reflect on the active role of plants in texts and visual representations in the literature and arts of the anglophone and the francophone worlds from the nineteenth century to the present day. We will think about the aesthetic, political, and epistemological implications of this form of agency and analyse the way in which plants act upon and with the human world from an anthrodecentric perspective. We will look at how plants can organise or disorganise our world, call into question established truths, and shape power relations, including political ones.

    Narrating the Body

New Perspectives on the Connection of Corporeality and Narrativity (c. 1500–1800)

Multiple disciplines such as gender, historical, or literary studies have been using different approaches to the body as a heuristic instrument. This interdisciplinary symposium invites scholars to reflect upon the intersections of corporeality and narrativity. Which role did the body play when writing? How did the body influence the narrative about the body and the author?

Inventing Past Narratives. Venice and the Adriatic Space (13th-15th centuries)

This conference aims to explore the dialogue between Venice and the Adriatic area from a specific perspective: the construction of the past. We would like to create a dialogue between specialists from various disciplines and also examine the validity of interdisciplinary approaches at the intersection of different cultural fields: textual and visual, material, and historiographic. The chronological and geographical perspective chosen covers the late Middle Ages and the early modern age and focuses on the interaction between Venice and other centres in the Adriatic space.

Libraries & Digital Humanities: Projects and Challenges

    Erasmus Training Week

Digital Humanities Laboratories’ staff involve professionals from different areas, encompassing teams that are necessarily interdisciplinary. The experience of information managers, librarians and documentalists, makes them the perfect partners to cooperate on these projects. In UNED, our Library is an essential part of the Laboratory of Innovation in Digital Humanities (LINHD), supporting a wide range of projects in these disciplines, as well as providing advice and training, both in UNED and other institutions. UNED Library will hold the International Meeting about Digital Humanities and the role of university libraries as essential allies in approaching DH projects, in Madrid in September 2022.

    Do we still need inspiration?

    Scriptures and theology

The aim of this conference is to scrutinize afresh the traditional notion of inspiration and related concepts such as revelation, in the framework of a theological reflection that takes into account both the challenges of biblical criticism and contemporary hermeneutics. What does it mean to speak of an inspired text when the manuscript evidence reveals that it is fluid, and when historical criticism shows that it is self-contradictory or fictional? Is there “theology” in the Bible, in spite of its inner plurality? Should reception be regarded as an integral part of revelation and/or of the inspiration process? Such questions will be raised not only in relation to Christianity, but also in relation to Judaism and Islam.

Eroticism, Poetic Concretism, and Visuality (1960-1970)

The erotic imaginary and the relation between body, gender and text nourished the daring experiences of neo-avant-garde visual poetics in the 1960s and 1970s by establishing themselves at the core of “verbi-voco-visual explorations” (McLuhan, 1967). Without losing sight of the vast cultural heritage and references of historical avant-gardes as well as of Beat Poetry, Fluxus and Situationist visual-erotic production, the symposium aims at reconstructing and assessing the impact of erotic desire on Concrete and Visual Poetry through a rich corpus of literary works, magazines, and ephemera starting with the Bibliothèque Kandinsky – Centre Pompidou collections and expanding the reflection to other relevant examples of post-war experimental poetry. In addition to keynote lectures and academic presentations, the conference will host poetry readings and performances in order to prompt an interdisciplinary and international debate on the issues, and to examine a unique body of works that illuminate the far-reaching conceptual and poetic implications of neo-avant-garde verbo-visual eroticism.

Speaking as the 'Other': Coloniality, Subalternity, and Political Articulations

    Calliope International Conference

Speaking as the 'Other' is organised by the ERC-funded project Calliope: Vocal Articulations of Parliamentary Identity and Empire (University of Helsinki). This multidisciplinary conference seeks to examine performative, embodied and acoustic histories of articulating political representation and colonial ‘otherness’. To that end, we intend to extend the focus beyond established Anglophone analyses of the metropole and colony, and indeed, beyond the disciplinary pre-eminence of Anglophone postcolonial studies.

Organicité et technicité. Hybridations dans le discours littéraire

Since the second half of the 20th century, a fundamental paradigm shift can be observed in the scientific discourses of various disciplines: The separation between the organic and the technical, which has shaped the "Western" history of ideas for centuries seems to have been abolished. This paradigm shift - from separation to hybridization - turns out to be a multifaceted process and becomes the scene of a contested terrain, also in literary studies. The discussion will focus on organic-technical figures of thought in German-language texts from the Middle Ages to contemporary literature.

Contemporary American Fiction in the Face of Technical Innovation

Although French woman writer Colette was indifferent to and even critical of the feminist movement of the early 1900s, in the way she lived her life as in her fiction, she exemplified financial and social independence and shame-free sexuality, or what would be call today “gender fluidity”. This international conference will show how Colette represents a vibrant and radical expression of feminism in tune with the #MeToo spirit in today's society
