Call for papers - Early modern

The Inquisition(s) and the Christian East, 1500-1800

The conference is the first of its kind to examine in a comparative way how Catholic ecclesiastical tribunals (Roman Inquisition, Spanish Inquisition, Portuguese Inquisition, episcopal courts, etc.) dealt with Eastern Christianity in early modern times. By bringing together historians of the Inquisition and specialists in the relationship between the Catholic World and the Eastern Churches, this colloquium aims to find out the far-reaching consequences of the attempt by Catholic authorities to frame and discipline a Christian tradition different from their own. Scholars are invited to focus both on the judicial level (Inquisition trials) and on the doctrinal one (book censorship, dubia circa sacramenta, liturgical issues), keeping a comparative perspective and linking discussions on the Christian East to other controversies formulated by theologians and missionaries in the 17th and 18th centuries.

    Seminar - Prehistory and Antiquity

Classicamente. Dialoghi senesi sul mondo antico

    Diritto e Ritualità

The full online seminar “Diritto e Ritualità” 10-11 November 2021 will focus on questions of Greek law and ritual forms in the ancient world, investigated through the lens of anthropology. We will explore the relationship between rhetoric and law, the evidence of judicial practices in literary sources and some issues related to the analysis of specific epigraphic sources (defixiones and prayers for justice). In the second day, we will try to put some ritual forms of the ancient world into context. In particular, we will investigate the function of knucklebones in Greek sanctuaries and the relationship between the ludic dimension and the ritual one. Late antique adoratio will also be discussed in light of the most recent theories developed by Anthropology and Ritual Studies.

History, Philology and Archaeology of Zoroastrianism

The purpose of this workshop will be to provide a multidisciplinary approach by combining historical studies, archaeology and philology, in order to contribute to the study of the ancient zoroastrian religion, ideally outside of modern Iran and India. Nevertheless, this purpose cannot be achieved without taking into consideration and a side-by-side comparison of the data from the long-standing tradition of the mentioned disciplines, collected from Iran, India and other related regions.

New Worlds, Old Worlds, Lost Worlds

Picturing Prehistory in American Art and Visual Culture

Atlantis, pre-Columbian “Mound Builders,” cave men locked in combat with T. Rex — visions of ancient, ruined, or “lost” worlds on a spectrum between fact and fantasy have long fascinated American artists and producers of visual culture. How have U.S. artists and image makers depicted prehistory, and to what ends? How have visualizations of prehistory from the eighteenth century to 1980 contributed to new conceptualizations of culture, time, and space? For this two-day conference, we invite papers examining images of prehistory, in different media and in both artistic and nonartistic contexts.

Spirituality, Healthcare And Social Movements In East Asia

    A Transnational Perspective

East Asian Network for the Academic Study Of Esotericism - EANASE's first conference aims to offer the chance to reflect on the intertwined relationship between spirituality, healthcare and social movements in East Asia from a trans-national/local/cultural perspective. The emergence of new religious movements like Theosophy, Falungong and Taireido, or the worldwide popularisation of, for instance, acupuncture, reiki and hypnosis, challenge reductionist binary views of East/West, tradition/modernity, science/religion. Likewise, the recent dissemination of New Age practices across East Asia or the ongoing study of Buddhist meditation by American and European psychiatrists seem to reflect broader concerns that, for the past two centuries or so, have ignored national and cultural borders – and whose wider social implications are now more visible than ever.

Urban Parish Communities in Medieval Europe, 1049-1545

Research in Medieval Studies - An International Meeting Series

We call for research papers that draw upon sociological analyses of secular and ecclesiastical communities, their discourses and the interactions between them— both in terms of cooperation and collaboration, and disputingly and competingly — in order to characterise the parish in its temporal and spiritual dimensions. Proposals may cover longer-term examinations or focus more narrowly on a period and place in Western and Eastern Christianity. Comparative approaches and contextualised micro-history are especially welcome in that they allow for further, wider comparison.

Esoteric currents and medicine (19th-early 20th century)

The academic annual journal Arcana Naturae invites submissions for its 2022 edition devoted to the relations between esoteric currents and medicine (19th-early 20th century). One objective of the issue is to adopt a bio-bibliographical perspective with a view to developing a comparative and trans-geographical analysis of the condition and outlook of “physician-occultist”. How were “esoteric” beliefs reconciled with medical knowledge? What was the medical and societal reception of such attempts at rapprochement? And did esoteric interests always translate into medical practices? These are examples of issues to which this collective work seeks to provide a response from an academic and historical perspective.

    Death and Religion

Death and religion share an interdependent relation. Where death is an event or state that threatens to disintegrate worlds and meaning, religion can be seen as a practice that categorizes, consoles and makes sense of this kind of disintegration. This special issue encourages scholars to contribute to this debate. Of special interest are situations in which religion becomes overbearing and a burden to carry forward in times of death, or if religious practices are obstructed, for example, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. How do these crisis situations affect the relationship between religion and death? This special issue aims at invoking curiosity, enquiry and interest in looking at the different facets of this topic.

    The Bible and Migration

Open Theology invites submissions for the topical issue “The Bible and Migration”, prepared in collaboration with the conference The Bible on the Move: Toward a Biblical Theology of Migration, held at Fuller Theological Seminary in January 2020. This special issue asks how cutting-edge biblical scholarship should inform conversation about and action relating to migration in the twenty-first century, bridging the gap between biblical studies, theology, and activism. Articles should examine how the biblical texts reflect diverse migrant experiences, as well as ways in which these texts reflect theologically on migration and appropriate responses to it among migrants and host communities. Articles may also critically interrogate the Bible’s use in arguments over migration and migrants’ reception by host communities.
