Intellectuals and the Great War

Call for papers - Early modern
Approaches to trans-local / trans-cultural / trans-civilizational dimension of Modernist movements
The trans-cultural and trans-civilizational potential of Modernism lies at the roots of our present globalized condition; on the other hand, internal contradictions of Modernism mark the limitations of our present consciousness. This is the reason why it is important to reinterpret Modernism from a planetary perspective. Our aim in this issue of "Planeta Literatur" is to foster the debate on how to approach Modernism understood not only as a transnational, but also a trans-cultural and a trans-civilizational movement.

1914-1918: the scandal in the imagination
How the imaginative representations of the First World War can affect the interpretation of history

The 1rst World War dramatically affected societies and territories, as well as personal lives and all forms of culture, in Europe and elsewhere in the world. The 1914-1918 conflict had in all respects a foundational nature. On the occasion of the 1rst World War commemorations, and in connection with the exhibition, "Summer of '14: The Last Days of the Old World", which will be held at the French National Library from March 25 to August 3, the French Committee of Cartography organizes a conference specifically dedicated to the role of cartography in the war, according to three main issues : the role of maps during the preparation of the war, the use of maps on the theatre of military operations, the importance of the map in a civil society during the war.

Call for papers - Representation

Humor and entertainment in popular culture during the Great War
Contributors to this volume will study the role of humor and more largely of entertainment in popular culture during the 1914-1918 conflict. This collective work seeks to evaluate some aspects of transnational war culture by examining seemingly light-hearted discourses on the First World War.

Central banks in the Great War
World War I was a major turning point in the history of central banks, as in the world history of economies and societies. It radically altered the place and the role of national banks of issue – as they were still called before 1914 – within States and monetary and financial systems. It was a major milestone in the historical emergence of actual central banks.

From One War to the Next: What Was Left of 1870-1871 in 1914?
International Relations, Armies and Societies
In Yesterday’s World: a European Memory, Stefan Zweig considered he could speak of the Austro-Hungarian Empire before 1914 as a “golden age of security” when “nobody believed in wars”, which were widely thought to belong to “bygones eras”. Indeed, one of the first questions that comes to mind on the eve of the commemorative events of 2014 is what did Europeans make out of the war and what did it mean to them: what memories and forms of knowledge fed their understanding of the new reality that faced them in the summer of 1914?

The first world war and language
Comparative approaches

Beginnings, starting and initiation: the "first times of the Great War"

The battle of Sambre-et-Meuse, August 1914
German, Belgian and French perspectives on the army, sites of memory and representations

Not All Quiet on the Ottoman Fronts
Neglected Perspectives on a Global War, 1914-18
As World War I was the central founding experience of the twentieth century and thus needs to be discussed in relation to various segments of society and on several levels, we believe that its 100th anniversary is the appropriate moment to bring together recent research on the Ottoman theater of the war based on the various traditions of this new military history established in the last 30 years and assess where we stand today in our knowledge of the World War and where we are headed. We therefore invite papers that develop existing approaches and questions to a further level. On this basis these papers will aid us in entering into a comparative, and where possible transnational, perspective of the war.

Bringing the Great War into perspective
From the summer of 1914, European societies seem brutally seized by war and, as a consequence, seized by the State. In the name of the State, millions of men enrolled in the armed forces are to fight one another. Bodies, minds and resources are subjected to a gigantic “mobilization”, a contemporary word still used by historians. A hundred years later, when all the warring States, as well as the States that were born from the conflict, are launching ambitious commemorative programs, the moment seems well chosen to study how the State wages war and, in return, how war transforms the State.
