    Journée d'étude - Histoire

    Venice, a Mediterranean regional power

Economic, maritime and political perspectives, 1669 – 1797

The Mediterranean has always been at the heart of Venice’s interests during the Early Modern Period. A main source of its prosperity, the Inner Sea maintained its vital role even after the “northern invasions”, the battle of Lepanto and the “downturn” of the 17th century. This seminar aims to explore the relationship between Venice and the Mediterranean between the loss of Crete, the last major dominion of Venetian maritime empire in 1669, and the end of the Republic in 1797.

Levantine Sociabilities in Europe in Giacomo Casanova’s time

Spies, Impostors, Courtesans and Men of Culture

In the eighteenth century, intrigue, libertinage and criminality changed the social norms of politeness and education thereby creating nonconformist social behaviours. An explicit, but certainly not unique, manifestation of these new trends is represented by the city of Venice and its adventurer par excellence, Giacomo Casanova (1725-1798). Ecclesiastic, writer, soldier, spy, alchemist, gambler and diplomat, he was engaged in a network of social relationships which are documented in his Histoire de ma vie (History of my Life), one of the most authentic sources of the customs and norms of European social life during the eighteenth century. Like London, Paris and Vienna, Venice became a centre of social mobility, geographically located as the threshold of the Levant.

Assist and Unify? Nation Building and Welfare in the Upper Adriatic and Eastern Baltic Sea Region in the 20th Century

Monographic issue of «Qualestoria. Rivista di storia contemporanea»

Questioning the primacy of the nation-state, a special issue of Qualestoria to be published in December 2022 aims to analyze how different welfare practices have represented a tool of nation-building in territories contested by various national groups or states. To what extent have different political contexts affected the use of welfare for nation-building purposes? What role have welfare practices played in strengthening the position of the titular nation or in attempting to integrate/assimilate minorities? What outcomes have “bottom-up” initiatives propelled? The special issue will try answer these questions with a focus on the eastern Baltic Sea region and the Upper Adriatic. Contributions related to other east central European areas will also be considered.

Greeks in the Archaic Age: Institutions, Interactions, Traditions

    Τ Ε Κ Μ Η Ρ Ι Α, 1

Τ Ε Κ Μ Η Ρ Ι Α, 1 is a Study Meeting born from the desire of young researchers to create a space for exchange, dialogue, and discussion in the wake of interdisciplinarity. The initiative dedicates its first new meeting to the memory of Clara Talamo, who recently passed away. For this reason, the Call proposes the development of themes to which the Scholar was particularly sensitive, and which have connoted the research directions of the Chair. The subject of Τ Ε Κ Μ Η Ρ Ι Α, 1 will therefore be Greeks in the Archaic Age: Institutions, Interactions, Traditions.

Inventing Past Narratives. Venice and the Adriatic Space (13th-15th centuries)

This conference aims to explore the dialogue between Venice and the Adriatic area from a specific perspective: the construction of the past. We would like to create a dialogue between specialists from various disciplines and also examine the validity of interdisciplinary approaches at the intersection of different cultural fields: textual and visual, material, and historiographic. The chronological and geographical perspective chosen covers the late Middle Ages and the early modern age and focuses on the interaction between Venice and other centres in the Adriatic space.

Geographical Mobility and Cultural Itineraries during the Late Middle Ages

The international congress Geographical Mobility and Cultural Itineraries during the Late Middle Ages (MobGIC) aims to explore the relationship between the geographical routes and itineraries taken by texts, books, artworks, and, in their wake, cultural ideas and tendencies. It will give special consideration to the Occitan-Catalan area as the starting, middle, and final points of these journeys. To investigate this topic, the focus will be on figures who are often left on the margins of study: the intermediaries and agents responsible for the transfer culture.

Penser l’action civique en relation avec les politiques urbaines et la planification

In this seminar, Dr Iolanda Bianchi will present her recent work on the democratisation of local public services by way of the paradigm of the common. The presentation will focus on two urban contexts, Naples and Barcelona, and examines the common-inspired transformation of their local public services, respectively, water services (Acqua Bene Comune A.S.) and sociocultural facilities (Citizens Asset Programme). The seminar will reflect on the capacity of public-common institutions to represent an alternative and more democratic management modality for local public services.

The Project of History – Histories of Projects

Architects / Historians in Post-war Italy

The multifaceted and nuanced relationship between history and design has marked late twentieth-century Italian architectural culture, and have been its most distinct characteristic on the international scene. This conference aims to explore the exchanges, tangencies, overlaps and frictions between designers – of the architectural object as much as of the city and the territory – and architectural historians in the cultural, political, economic, and social context of Italy in the second half of the 20th century. Intended to discuss the specific contributions of individual figures, moments, and sites of exchange, it invites studies based on archival research that are also open to questioning the broader historical, cultural, and disciplinary conditions that shaped dialogues between architects and historians in post-war Italy.

The Dominicans and the Making of Florentine Cultural Identity

Influences and Interactions between Santa Maria Novella and the Commune of Florence (1293-1313)

Florence, the celebrated city-republic, dominates the historiography of medieval Italy still today. Her glory and crises define the paradigm for investigating other medieval city-states. As attention to medieval cities has increased, so too the history of the Dominican Order has constituted a major field of study, since the Dominicans were at the forefront of the cultural and religious life of Medieval cities. This conference intends to analyse the reciprocal influences and interactions between the activities and works of this constellation of Dominican intellectuals and the making of Florentine cultural identity through the social and political events that consumed the public life of the Commune between 1293 and 1313.

Building techniques in writings on architecture between Italy, France and the Low Countries

During the first half of the nineteenth century traveling and sojourning in Europe reflected a cultural climate marked by both resistance and enthusiasm. The conference is intended as well to cast light on the evolving changes in travel and sojourn in Naples and localities along the gulf during the first half of the nineteenth century, not failing to draw comparisons with other areas of Mediterranean Europe.

Courts and Courtly Cultures in Early Modern Italy and Europe

    Models and Languages

The conference will focus on the topic of court culture in Lombardy and North Italy, within the conceptual framework of the SNF Sinergia project: Constructing identity: visual, spatial, and literary cultures in Lombardy, 14th to 16th centuries. This interdisciplinary project, which includes five research unities in the Universities of Geneva, Lausanne, Zurich, and EPFL at Lausanne, works on Visconti and Sforza ages, when Lombardy, one of the most important European regions, established itself as a distinct political and cultural entity. It has been an exemplary case of the construction of a cultural identity, whose repercussions still resonate in present-day Italy. As a part of a potent political project, it has been sustained by complex mechanisms of self-representation and the imposition of a prestige taste. The conference will conclude the research of the Sinergia project discussing its results in a wider historical, literary, architectural and artistic context and verifying its methodological approaches at the light of multiple points of view.

    The Vico Road

Giovanni Battista Vico (1668–1744) spent most of his professional life as Professor of Rhetoric at the University of Naples. He was trained in jurisprudence, but read widely in Classics, philology, and philosophy, all of which informed his highly original views on history, historiography, and culture. His thought is most fully expressed in his mature work, the Scienza Nuova or The New Science. In his own time, Vico was relatively not so known, but from the nineteenth century onwards his views found a wider audience and today his influence is widespread in the humanities and social sciences. While borrowing our title “The Vico Road” to James Joyce, the conference at the Paris Institute of Advanced Study will examine the current state of the study of the works of Giambattista Vico. We will try to encourage discussion of ideas that can be considered Vichian in nature and that have some affinity with modern and contemporary thought.
