Memory, perception and politics of empire today

The study of empires is a dynamic field; we are constantly revising our knowledge of empires, inspired by newly discovered sources as well as new approaches. The context of historical writing itself significantly influences our perception of imperial history. Post-imperial realities also force us to rethink the empire. This special issue of Diacronie. Studi di storia contemporanea invites contributions that present perspectives on how we remember and study the empires that collapsed at the end of the First World War.

Ukraine Under Fire: The Visual Arts in Ukraine and Abroad Since 2014

To say that Ukraine has a complicated relationship with Russia is an understatement: the region was under direct rule in the imperial period, experienced a period of freedom after 1917, followed by repressive rule through large periods of the Soviet era, and then regained independence in 1991. Now, Ukraine faces Russian hostility and the violation of its territorial integrity, which began in February 2014 with the occupations of the Crimea and Donbas region. I solicit abstracts from scholars, critics, gallerists, and artists whose work reflects upon the role of the visual arts during the current conflict in this region. Their topics should explore how artists have dealt with the Russian invasion and other forms of hostilities in recent years.

Beyond Russia’s Two Capitals: Regional Art Exhibitions in the Russian Empire

Art life in the regions of the Russian Empire has often been sidelined in the larger picture of art history, and this conference aims to bring this vital material to wider attention and stimulate discussion. If the 1905 relaxing of censorship vastly increased the number of exhibitions, local societies and individuals had already established regular and highly significant exhibitions all over the Empire. We invite colleagues to illuminate and discuss exhibitions that were held in the different regions, to consider their specific features and become part of this huge — and inevitably collaborative — project. We particularly welcome papers that address exhibitions before 1905.

Violence and Conflict in Alexandre Kojève’s works

“Philosophical Journal of Conflict and Violence” - Special Issue

Alexandre Kojève is well known for having initiated a whole generation of intellectuals into a certain reading of Hegel. From the claim that the struggle for recognition must be necessarily a “bloody” one to the assessment that the replacement of those elites whose authority has expired may call for their annihilation, not to mention his equation of biological “death” with human freedom or his interpretation of revolutionary terror as a pedagogical tool to bring forth the perfect citizen of the post-historical age, Kojève´s corpus offers not few topics in which to ground such a reexamination. The special issue of Philosophical Journal of Conflict and Violence (PJCV) seeks cutting-age articles from contributors which openly explore the aforementioned topics as well as others along the same lines.

    Comprendre la guerre en Ukraine

CFP Forum Ukraine - The American University of Paris

The George and Irina Schaeffer Center for the Study of Genocide, Human Rights, and Conflict Prevention, and the American University of Paris hope to provide a virtual forum on May 9-10, 2022, for scholars from multiple disciplines and humanitarian activists to process the causes and consequences of the war in the Ukraine. Because of the urgency and ongoing nature of the conflict, we are not expecting polished academic presentations but short (10-15 minutes) thought pieces that help to elucidate various aspects and interpretations of the war. A primary aim is to give Ukrainian and Russian scholars the opportunity to express themselves and their point of view.

    The Making of the 1990s

The Genesis of Post-Soviet Society through Its Material Culture

This interdisciplinary colloquium explores the social dynamics of the 1990s through the period’s changing material culture. Everyday “stuff” was transformed by the disappearance of the Soviet system, the irruption of the market, and the opening to the world. The aim is to investigate the long disintegration of the Soviet system by looking at how populations which are caught in a state of uncertainty react with material inventiveness in order to adapt.

Borders and crossings: a transdisciplinary conference on travel writing

The 2022 Borders and Crossings conference will take part in a unique context: that of a post-Soviet and Nordic country situated in a European geographical, economic and political context. Estonia’s history is marked by successive occupations, which could arguably be considered as a form of travel from the point of view of the occupiers. These occupations have affected travel to and from this area, and generated specific mobility, such as deportation and diaspora. This context brings our attention to restricted travels and the forms of control at work when it comes to travel. Additionally, this conference acknowledges the emergency of the ecological crisis and the pressure that travelling can put on the Earth system.

The Creation and Re-creation of National Armies in Post-Soviet and Post-Communist Countries

Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, 15 post-Soviet Armies have emerged, sometimes built from scratch. During this time, armies of post-communist countries[1] have undergone several major transformations. For this future issue, we have chosen to study the creation and evolution of these armies primarily through the lens of social and cultural history, and the political aspects of their transition since 1991. The process of creating post-Soviet and post-communist armies can be analyzed in different perspectives and at different levels. The issue will focus on the experience of post-Soviet states and post-communist countries with an in-depth examination of the kinds of individuals who put on the uniform, combining the approaches of sociologists, historians, political scientists, ethnologists and anthropologists from a comparative perspective.

Logics, stakes and limits of cultural heritage transmission in Eurasia

The thematic issue is about cultural heritage and patrimonialization. It aims at comparing the varying notions of “tradition” and “safeguarding of culture” within an empirical approach. We focus on conflicts about the creation of culture and how these globalised and specific contexts shape a changing self-perception of “ethnic identity” in Northern Asia, Central Asia and Eastern Europe. The articles may be on local as well as global expressions of cultural heritage: poetical genre, engraving or wood carving, architecture, ethno-parks or ecomuseums, cultural tourism, opposition to projects of valorization, etc. Analysis may also focus on the role of actors involved in local projects, on historical contexts or on international fashions.

    Televising the socialist body

Projections of health and welfare on the socialist and post-socialist screen

Bodies and health on television have not been extensively researched, in particular in the socialist and transition to market-economy contexts. The conference seeks to analyse how television and its evolving formats –contemporary, similar and yet differing in national broadcast contexts– expressed and staged bodies and health from local, regional, national and international perspectives. The conference seeks to better understand the role that TV, as a modern visual mass media, has played in what may be cast as the transition from a national bio-political public health paradigm at the beginning of the twentieth century, to alternative societal forms of the late twentieth century when (supposedly) “better” and “healthier” lives were increasingly shaped by market forces.

Divided memories, shared memories: Poland, Russia, Ukraine

History mirrored in literature and cinema

In Central and Eastern European countries, memorial questions appeared right after the demise of the communist regimes in 1989–1991, revealing long-denied processes. The phenomenon of the rise of repressed memories along with the rewriting of history, and the political uses of the past are noticeable in Poland, Russia, and Ukraine, three countries whose histories are as often shared as their memories are divided. The “memory wars” in which these three states have sometimes been engaged since the end of the 1980s have been the subject of an abundant historiography.

    Post-soviet diaspora(s) in Western Europe (1991-2017)

Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, millions of former soviet citizens crossed the national borders in search of better lives in new countries, in what was the biggest migration tide since the end of World War II. These Post-Soviet migrants were diverse in origins, strategies and expectations. They often represented a challenge to the orthodox views of migration processes, since in most cases these flows could not be easily described and analysed following commonly accepted theoretical frameworks. Everybody seemed to be on the move: labour migrants, political refugees, cross-border traders, “tourists” planning to forget their return... and in a short period, they spread all over Western Europe.

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture Journal, special issue, December 2017

Benelux: Europe and the Cold War

The Power of non-powers and perspectives on the economic, social and political aspects of European Security Strategy in the early Cold War

What are the historical roots of views of European defense and Europe's role in Western defence? How did the early European Integration movement perceive American involvement in the development of a common security strategy? This conference will investigate these and other related questions by re-examining the early cold war US/European relationship and the role that early Cold War period developments played in the European Integration Movement. In so doing, this conference will also showcase findings which can contribute to the unification of Cold War and European Integration historiographies.
