The challenges of historical and biomedical research in medical collections and biobanks

In the context of the Neverending infectious diseases project, we have been confronted with the challenges of using a historical medical collection for biomedical research. Historical collections have a rich potential for current and future research, but their use is far from straightforward. This is a relatively unexplored topic and as such, this workshop proposes to take concrete situations into account in order to consider the status of historical medical collections and consider them from medical, historical and social science perspectives.

    Aids before Aids

This issue of Quaderni storici aims to focus on the transitional phase, so to speak, the one in which contagion emerges, manifests itself, and acts, causing sickness and death, but without yet being understood, nor known in its pathological characters, etiologies, and therapies. What are the social practices - including institutional practices in their contextual genesis - acting at this historical juncture in which the concrete experience of illness collides with the absence of terms and interpretations to counter it? What cultural and social processes are activated to deal with something that is both concretely active and culturally incomprehensible? How do these processes involve sexuality and the history of the way in which it has been thought of, signified, and governed?

Psychiatry and addictions in Europe in the XXth century

The goal of this international colloquium is to explore psychiatry’s contribution to the troubled and non-linear history of the medicalization of addictions in Europe throughout the XXth century. This question should be explored through the lens of medical concepts, institutions of care and cure, as well as patients’ experiences. At the same time, our aim is to explore how psychiatric archives may renew the social history of drugs.

Defining and defying the concept of deviance and degeneration in the British Isles and North America in the 19th century

This one-day conference aims at exploring the definition(s) and contours of deviance and degeneration as it was conceived in the British Isles and North America in the 19th century. PhD students, postgraduate students and junior scholars whose research pertains to the study of deviant groups, whether self-defined or not, are particularly welcome to participate. Speakers will be invited to focus on the processes of definition of the standards of normality – whether religious, social, political, legal, medicalor sexual – as well as what those processes entailed for those who were labelled ‘deviants’. The role of scientists, doctors but also political authorities is of considerable interest in this respect, as are the ways in which normative standards were circumvented and challenged.

    Emotional Bodies

A Workshop on the historical Performativity of Emotions

The idea that the body is the site in which emotions are expressed is an old one in Western Culture. However, shall we alternatively consider emotions as historical agents that have given meaning to systems of symbolic relations which we understand here as “bodies”? This three-day workshop seeks to explore the conception of emotions as cultural practices that do things and have the power of creating emotional bodies throughout history. With this aim in mind, we will examine the production of physical, social, political, artistic and literary bodies in connection with the changing meaning of social norms, cultural codes and institutions, and especially as the result of the work of emotions.

Annual conference of the Swiss Society for the History of Medicine and Sciences, September 5 – 7, 2013, Bern, Switzerland. The conference would like to address the issue from various perspectives and ask e.g. the following questions: To which levels of medical knowledge and activity (skill, professional knowledge, experience, relationship with patients) did and does the claim of expertise refer to? Which strategies, rhetorics and kinds of self-fashioning were and are used in order to achieve, retain or reject the status of expertise? Which was and is the relationship between expertise, profession(nalism), institutionalization and specialization? In what respect is there a difference between a physician's claim of expertise and that of other health professionals?

    Complaining about Medicine

In recent years, studies into experiences of health care have led historians to engage with the issue of the medical complaint. As expressions of dissatisfaction, disquiet and failings in service provision, the complaint is both a vital antidote to progressive histories of health care and, in generating contemporary investigation and debate, has also left a fertile seam for historical research. Often it is only when things go wrong that we begin to understand thecomplexity at work in past events. This two-day international conference will explore what has happened historically when medicine generated complaints.
