  Black music: the history of sound resistance

  Dans le cadre d’une approche pluridisciplinaire qui pourra faire appel autant aux réflexes d’historiens que de sociologues, d’anthropologues, d’ethnologues, de musicologues, de civilisationistes ou de spécialistes des études postcoloniales, cet ouvrage collectif se propose de s’intéresser aux différentes manifestations musicales dites « noires ». Au-delà de simples études chronologiques de cas, les articles proposés auront pour objectif une réflexion scientifique autour de questionnements de ce type : Quand et comment se sont développées ces musiques noires ? Dans quel(s) contexte(s) ? Quel est le but de telle(s) manifestation(s) ? Quelles pratiques comportementales (rituelles, vestimentaires, corporelles, sexuelles, etc.) s’associent à de tels courants musicaux ? Quels messages – politique, social, idéologique – se diffusent par leur biais ? Quelle a été la réaction des pouvoirs publics face à ces musiques ? En quoi s’inscrivent-elles dans une culture de résistance ? Résistance contre qui ou quoi ? En quoi jouent-elles un rôle de contre-pouvoir ?

  Representations of Power and Power of the Image in British and American Contemporary Photography

  Représentations du pouvoir et pouvoir de l’image dans la photographie contemporaine américaine et britannique

  From the power of images to images of power, this workshop will explore the representations of power and the power of representation in contemporary American and British photography. What is photography capable of doing? Whether in the form of a public person, the environment of power (emblematic places and explicit or underlying forms) or its symbolism, what is photography capable of revealing about power itself? Political, institutional, economic or social power all depend upon a system of relations or tensions between groups or individuals (accepted, rejected, questioned, expressed visually or internalized) participating in the construction of the identity, myths or memories of the American or British nations. In what manner does photography enhance or contribute to this construction or deconstruction of the notion of identity and nation?

  Displacement, Transgression and Dissent

  France, Great Britain and the American Colonies (c.1600-1800)

  This young researchers' conference sets out to examine norms and transgessions in 17th- and 18th-century France, Great Britain and early America, in relation to issues such as knowledge and science, religious dissent and political radicalism, the ontological status of man, definitions of reason and forms of unreason, including melancholy and madness, new discourses of body and mind, including those that shaped concepts of sexual behaviour deemed abnormal or contrary to Nature, the emergence of a political sphere, the beginnings of a public sphere...The aim of the conference will be to explore how these and related issues were explored in literary and artistic forms, as for example in poetry, satirical pamphlets, travel writings and utopias, drama and theological or moral controversies.

  Philo-series episode no.6: Lost

  Le cycle de colloques « Philosopher avec les séries télévisées » initié en 2009 avec Buffy, tueuse de vampires se propose d’analyser chaque année une série télévisée déterminée, sur un mode à la fois monographique et interdisciplinaire. Pour 2014, nous proposons de nous pencher sur la série de J. J. Abrams, Damon Lindelof et Carlton Cuse intitulée Lost, laquelle fut originellement diffusée en six saisons sur la chaîne américaine ABC entre 2004 et 2010. À son point de départ, l’histoire d’un groupe de survivants au crash de leur avion sur une île perdue (lost) au milieu du Pacifique. Tandis que l’île se révèle au fur et à mesure de la série remplie de multiples dangers et mystères, le spectateur découvre progressivement l’histoire personnelle de chaque survivant, chaque épisode étant centré, par un habile jeu de flashbacks alterné avec le récit principal, sur l’un d’entre eux.

  En présence de Judith Butler, Avital Ronell, Catherine Malabou, Martin Puchner, ce prochain colloque questionnera le lien problématique entre théâtre et philosophie, à l’aune des pensées anglo-américaines. De nouveaux croisements, de nouveaux transferts entre l’idée et la scène, l’abstrait et le concret impliquent un changement radical de perspective sur la philosophie et la performance. Au-delà du théâtre pensé comme référence littéraire ou comme concept opératoire, il s’agira de comprendre comment les philosophes anglo-américains peuvent nous communiquer une idée de la scène contemporaine, en tant que lieu physique, concret et vivant, théâtral et/ou performatif.
