Jurists and the Medieval State: Varieties and Development of a Symbiotic Relationship, 1000-1500

    4th Workshop on Legal Culture

This workshop proposes to look at the evolution of the roles that jurists played in government, as the latter developed and became more complex in the period between ca. 1000 and 1500. Historians have long accepted that university trained jurists, both clerical and lay, were instrumental to the development of medieval government. The growth of the administrative apparatus of government and the expansion of its claims of authority and control on society combined with the thickening numbers of law graduates to broaden the scope of the service that jurists provided to rulers. By inviting participants to focus their analysis on a common set of questions (specified below), this workshop will attempt to bring out the stable as well as the dynamic aspects of that service.

Envisioning Latin America: Power and Representation in audiovisual (re)productions

Forma Revista d'Estudis Comparatius. Art, Literatura, Pensament

This issue seeks to critically address power structures in audiovisual (re)productions in and from Latin America and discuss how these play a role in the societal construction and representation of individual and collective identities, the ‘us’ and the ‘other’. By doing so, it aims at understanding how these representations – and broader discourses associated therewith – can be critically examined through media productions (cinema, television, radio, photography etc.) and their use as historical sources.

Las Vanguardistas: Spanish Women Poets in Transnational Contexts (1920–1975)

Spanish avant-garde poetry has traditionally been associated with the “Generation of 1927”, a group of male poets that has dominated critical discussions of literary history for almost a century. Studies that have embraced the generational model have often considered the Spanish avant-garde either as a unique national phenomenon or as an imitation of foreign literary models. This special issue challenges these views by considering women’s participation in avant-garde circles in and beyond Spain and placing the Spanish avant-garde in a transnational context.

New Outlooks on the Napoleonic Empire

Young Napoleonists’ Conference in the Bicentenary of Napoleon’s Death (1821-2021)

Since the 1990s, the multifaceted political and social transformation started by the Napoleonic era (1799-1815) has gained increasing scholarly attention; even if these studies have, for the most part, focused on the changes that took place within the Napoleonic Europe, the scope continues to broaden toward a global-scale geography. The same is true for the angles of research from which the period can be examined: recently, historians have started to deal not only with such classic issues as military or political history, but also to address the diverse range of questions posed by the interdisciplinary study of empires. It is only fair that, as the bicentenary of Napoleon’s death (1769-1821) approaches, we seize the chance to showcase and discuss the research that young historians are pursuing on the Napoleonic legacy and its impact on the existing order.

Warfare, Welfare, and Transformation of European Society in the 20th Century

The workshop aims to study the transformative impact of 20th century wars on European societies. The first research avenue emphasises a perspective “from below”, by focusing on the relations between society and State policy. A second strand aims to deconstruct the traditional view centred on the Nation-State, by analysing the phenomena of mobilisation, demobilisation and transformation according to infra-state (at micro and meso levels) as well as supra-state scales. The workshop shifts focus on social actors and “sectional interests” (e.g. unions, employers’ organisations, voluntary sector), and aims to discuss the impact of the war from a transnational and entangled point of view. As it calls into question the natural primacy of the scale of analysis of the nation-state, it questions the caesura between wartimes and post-war times to consider the processes of war exit (sortie de guerre) and those of social translation beyond the end of the fighting.

Between Conflict and Accommodation? Christian-Democracy and the Rise of “new social movements”, 1960s-1990s

The aim of this conference is to analyze the relation, conflicts and exchanges, between Christian-democracy and the so-called “new social movements” fromthe 1960s until the early 1990s. It wantsto adopt a reciprocal perspective, looking at the ways in which Christian-Democratic parties and related movements reacted in response to the emergence and development of these movements from the 1960s onwards, and, inversely, at the ways in which these “new social movements” were interconnected, in real and imagined terms, to Christian-Democracy. The geographical scope is not limited to Western Europe, but also includes other regions, most notably Latin America.

Imaging North-Eastern Europe: Baltic and Scandinavian states in the eyes of local, regional, and global observers

The image of North-Eastern Europe appears composite and complex. While its geographical conglomeration is cut across by the Baltic Sea, it is not a coherent area at a cultural and political level. Far from attempting to see homogeneous regions where there are none, the transnational interactions and mobility across the Baltic Sea in the last centuries are, besides historical realities, central nodes around whom regional linkages of solidarity and mutual understanding have been imagined. These constructions show that imagination operates also for linking distant spaces and uneven realities. Our aim is to investigate the birth, transformation, international success or lack of success as well as conflicts concerning the multiple imaginaries of North-East Europe, intended as the space which includes all the Baltic riparian states, plus Norway and Belarus, from a historical perspective, with a focus on the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Careers in politics, politics as a career

Developments in 19th and early 20th century Europe

During the nineteenth century, the field of European politics witnessed a host of significant changes, prominent among them being the increasing tendency towards its professionalization. Against the backdrop of major social and cultural shifts, politics ceased to be exclusively regarded as the traditional elite’s ‘duty of honor’ and opened its doors, first to the middle class and then, with the extension of the franchise, to lower social and professional strata. The aim of our workshop is to follow how politics became not only a stand-alone profession, but also part and parcel of careers in other professional fields during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. We are interested in the factors underlying this process, in how it manifested in different European spaces and under different historical conditions, as well as in its outcomes and societal impact.

This question should be explored through the lens of medical concepts, institutions of care and cure, as well as patients’ experiences. At the same time, our aim is to explore how psychiatric archives may renew the social history of drugs.

“Émigré Europe”: Civil Engagement Transfers between Eastern and Western Europe, 1933-1989

Agency and action in Czech, Slovak, Hungarian and Polish émigré communities during the Cold War

“Émigré Europe” seeks to explore the means and methods through which Central and Eastern European migrants were able to engage new or existing civil society structures within their host countries to set or express their own agendas and interact with their host societies on a range of levels, from local grassroots initiatives up to institutional European organizations and decision-making bodies. The conference invites scholars from different backgrounds to foster interdisciplinary collaboration and discussion on the future potential of the research model for a wide-ranging study of European migration. We encourage contributors to think broadly about the porous geographical, temporal and political boundaries of European migration during and also immediately after the Cold War.

Alternative Cultural Globalization: from East Asia to Europe

Without denying the contribution of the American model, which’s mastery in the field of pop culture has been emulated, the objective of this colloquium is to bring to light the alternative represented by East Asia, by spotlighting both the common features and the specificities of countries located in this geographical area, compared to Western countries. For example, if Hallyu was greatly inspired by the Japanese cultural industry, South Korea was nevertheless able to develop quite quickly its own strategies for the production and circulation of its products.

The Power of non-powers and perspectives on the economic, social and political aspects of European Security Strategy in the early Cold War

What are the historical roots of views of European defense and Europe's role in Western defence? How did the early European Integration movement perceive American involvement in the development of a common security strategy? This conference will investigate these and other related questions by re-examining the early cold war US/European relationship and the role that early Cold War period developments played in the European Integration Movement. In so doing, this conference will also showcase findings which can contribute to the unification of Cold War and European Integration historiographies.
