The Americans in the western Mediterranean (1942-1945)
Landings, liberation and the "pax americana"
The objective of this meeting is to refocus the history of landings and subsequent military liberation operations in the Western Mediterranean, between 1942 and 1945, from an American perspective. Indeed, from Operation Torch in North Africa to the landing in Provence in August 1944 and the final battles in Italy in the spring of 1945, the United States asserted their decisions over the British within the coalition. Furthermore, the arrival of thousands of American soldiers, coupled with the installation of dozens of military bases in North Africa, Italy, Southern France, and Corsica, was accompanied by the establishment of various administrative structures by the United States to ensure a return to order and to set up a kind of "Pax Americana" according to their own interests. The interactions of these soldiers with the local populations sometimes lead to tensions. The aim, from a comparative perspective, is to go beyond the simple military dimension and broaden the study of this theater of operations to include political, economic, social, and cultural fields.

Dans son article intitulé « La guerre a eu lieu », paru dans le premier numéro des Temps modernes au lendemain du second conflit mondial, Maurice Merleau-Ponty décrivait différents aspects caractérisant la vie d’avant-guerre en France face à la possibilité d’un conflit déclenché par l’expansionnisme allemand : insouciance, incrédulité, méfiance envers « la politique », individualisme. En outre, il y soulignait les différentes attitudes qui avaient mûri sous l’occupation nazie (impossibilité de « rester neutres », nouvelle idée – non plus individualiste – de la liberté, engagement), tout en identifiant leurs conséquences sur les temps à venir (conscience du poids de l’histoire, des institutions, « de nos rapports multiples avec autrui et avec le monde »). Merleau-Ponty nous léguait ainsi des réflexions précieuses que nous sommes sollicités à reprendre et réélaborer aujourd’hui à l’aune de la guerre en Ukraine déclenchée par l’invasion russe unanimement et légitimement condamnée.

Nous souhaitons organiser un moment de rencontre, de réflexion et d’échange autour de l’œuvre de Maïssa Bey, aussi dans une perspective de comparaison avec d'autres écrivain·e·s, en posant une simple question : comment arrive-t-elle à écrire les blancs de l’histoire de l’Algérie ? Notre but est de faire dialoguer des chercheurs et chercheuses qui s’inscrivent dans une pluralité d’approches en sciences humaines et sociales (historiens, littéraires, sociologues, anthropologues, psychanalystes, etc.).

Antimilitarisme et société en Italie (1970-2020)
Depuis la fin de la seconde guerre mondiale, les USA sont présents militairement en Italie, notamment en Sardaigne et en Sicile qui, en raison de leur position stratégique dans la Méditerranée, sont des lieux centraux de décisions, d’opérations et d’exercices militaires, en lien avec les conflits internationaux (au Moyen-Orient, en Afrique du Nord, ou encore au Yemen pour le conflit russo-ukrainien). Cette journée d’étude et de débats vise à comprendre comment ces mouvements et collectifs travaillent à la transmission de leurs luttes et à leur réactualisation dans le panorama militant du pays.

History of “carabinieri”, gendarmeries and police with military status history
Italian Society of Military History, in charge to publish the journal Nuova Antologia Militare (NAM), offers the possibility to publish contributions dedicated to the history of “carabinieri”, gendarmeries and police forces with military status. The main fields of interest are the police activities like riot crowd control, public order, investigation activities, patrolling et cetera, but it is not limited to those activities. You could consider focusing your paper on the social role of the personnel, on the development of skills and so on. The call for paper is open to contributions on Police forces during war time with the exception of the role covered as combatant units.

Italian Military Occupations in Europe, 1940-1943
Between 1939 and 1943, the Italian armed forces occupied Albania and portions of France, Greece and Yugoslavia. In September 1943 when Italy signed an armistice with the Allies, these territories were quickly occupied by Germany, ending Italian dreams of a European spazio vitale. Although these military occupations ended in failure for Italy, they represent an important aspect of the history of Fascism, military occupations, and the Second World War. This special issue aims to contribute to the historiography of Italian military occupations in Europe, particularly those which present original research.

Depuis la guerre froide le continent africain est le théâtre d’une instabilité politique accrue. Malgré le regain démocratique qui émerge au début des années 1990, des pratiques contestataires, plus ou moins unanimes, comme le renversement du pouvoir en place (Printemps arabe, Burkina‐Faso…), les soulèvements populaires face à la révision de la Constitution (République Démocratique du Congo), la contestation des élections (Burundi) questionnent aujourd’hui la viabilité du régime démocratique en Afrique. Si la notion d’instabilité politique renvoie à la propension d’effondrement gouvernemental, celle de conflit est déjà une conséquence de cette action. L’insécurité accompagne désormais la transition démocratique et les conflits se multiplient.

This panel seeks to provide a reflection on a multidisciplinary basis about the ethical implications on research in humanities and social science related to the objects of study. These objects potentially induce the researcher to "adopt" (even indirectly) one or more of the parts/reasons involved.

Letters, diaries and memoirs of soldiers, women and children in the First World War
What were the feelings, the perceptions and the mental attitudes of soldiers and civilians, of women and children, during the war? What strategies of psychological resistance did they employ in response to such destabilising experience? It is possible to answer these questions by consulting the wide variety of writings produced by the combatants and by the civilian population "mobilised" during the conflict. These letters, diaries, and memoirs – some still hidden in old drawers, though many collected in 'folk writing' archives – are also of considerable narrative and historical interest, due to their linguistic peculiarities, and their efficacy as depth-probes and guides into the war. This conference will address the methodological debates that are still ongoing, while presenting texts of particular significance, as well as the results of European research in historical and linguistic fields.

Le Bollettino della Società di Studi Valdesi est une revue d'études semestrielle italienne ayant une longue tradition et prestige. Actif depuis 1884, elle est consacrée à la publication des recherches historiques concernant le Valdisme et les mouvements de réforme religieuse en Italie et en Europe. Le comité scientifique a décidé de consacrer un numéro spécial (n ° 214, Juin 2014) à « Diasporas, expulsions et exilés religioniscausa dans l'Europe de l'époque moderne (XIV-XVIII siècles) », un sujet qui dans ces dernières années a revenu au centre du débat historique.
