Textiles: collections, values and tastes

Falling in love in the Enlightenment

The character-spectator in audiovisual fictions

Light and dark in the Americas

Heraldry and the papacy, no.2. The Middle Ages - the modern period

Call for papers - Ethnology, anthropology

Eros and Thanatos in the Arts of Asia
Revue « Art Asie Sorbonne »
From Plato to Saint Augustine to Freud, the pairing Eros / Thanatos occupies a place that is both central and multi-faceted in Western thought and art. It appears as a celebration of love as a vital energy that allows the (male) soul to escape its mortal body and reach the divine, but also as a threat when under the effect of carnal desire, or of feminine, maternal power, the soul is exhausted. This is also the case in Asian thought and art, whether in popular beliefs and images, religious icons, classical, traditional or contemporary representations.

When New York looks at the School of Paris (1930-1950)
Reception, rereadings, and appropriations
The dialogue that the Musée de l’Orangerie has chosen to establish between the School of Paris painter Chaïm Soutine (1893–1943) and the American Abstract Expressionist Willem de Kooning (1904-1997), affords researchers the opportunity to explore the impact on the then-nascent American Abstract Expressionism movement by the art produced by European artists living in Paris during the interwar period. This symposium aims to revisit the sources to better understand this history and encourages candidates to participate in a review of what was visible of European art in the United States before 1950. It also aims to examine the conditions of the birth of American Abstract Expressionism in its relationship to the European, and particularly French, figurative tradition, in the specific context of the Second World War.

Censuring arts, framing bodies

Perspective journal, no.2022 – 1
The journal will devote this issue to the transport of objects and artworks. While the study of the transport of cultural heritage assets has given rise to considerable specialized literature and remains a key issue for the institutions responsible for their conservation, the historiography of the development and standardization of its practices remains to be established. And conversely, within the history of art, where the phenomena of artistic circulation and transfers constitute a well-established research field, the most pragmatic aspects of the physical transport of the objects tend to be ignored.

Imago, Actus et Verbum. Challenges and Questions in Medieval Studies
A crossdisciplinary dialogue between philology, philosophy, history, art and literature
On the outset of the 21st century, cross-disciplinary studies on the Middle Ages seem to be in need of a careful reconsideration of their nature, scope and aims. This is specially so after the series of "turns" undergone by historiography in the last four decades. Despite their differences, philosophy, history, philology , literary studies and art are also bound through their work on texts; and all are currently faced with both methodological and substantive issues raised by important shifts in contemporary society. This congress is devoted to a global assessment of the current state of affairs in medieval studies, but also the upcoming challenges.

The hundred years of Bauhaus - France and teaching

The Virgin and the City : Urban Marian Spaces in Late Medieval Europe
The session wishes to analyze the Marian presence in Late Medieval European cities. The scholarly importance of the session lies in understanding how the Virgin became a part of urban landscapes and how the political and civic powers enhanced religious place‐making practices. How was the Mother of God accommodated and exhibited in civic space? What does Marian images’ location reveal about the relationship between devotion and public places? Why did the Virgin become the guarantor of civic unity? And finally, how did Mary personify the “urban ideology”?
