  Animal, animalité, bestialité dans les images médiévales

  XVes rencontres du groupe de recherches en iconographie médiévale (GRIM) / IMAGO

  Comment les images médiévales traduisent-elles la place de l’animal dans le monde créé, son inscription dans la nature et les liens qui l’unissent à l’homme ? À quelles conceptions du monde renvoie la figuration en s’attachant aux animaux et à l’animal en général ? À partir d’études de cas qui s’attacheront à mettre en évidence leur méthodologie, les interventions de cette journée interrogeront les notions de vivant, d’animal, d’animalité, de bestialité dans les cultures visuelles du V^e au XV^e siècle (mondes occidentaux et orientaux).

  Instruments à cordes pincées : organologie, facture, modes de jeu, fonctions

  Après le symposium international De organis dédié à l’orgue roman (2018), les colloques sur les Percussions et flûtes tambourines médiévales (2019) et sur les Cornemuses (2021), il s’agira cette année de rassembler différents types de spécialistes autour des questions liées à la connaissance, au processus de restitution, à la facture, aux modes de jeu et aux fonctions sociales des instruments à cordes pincées. L’objectif est de croiser différentes méthodologies disciplinaires : musicologie, ethnomusicologie, archéologie, archéologie expérimentale, organologie, iconographie, histoire de l’art, littérature médiévale, histoire médiévale, facture instrumentale, performance musicale.

  Symbolic and Material Changes to Cult Images in the Classical and Medieval Ages

  Iconotropy is a Greek word which literally means “image turning.” William J. Hamblin (2007) defines the term as “the accidental or deliberate misinterpretation by one culture of the images or myths of another one, especially so as to bring them into accord with those of the first culture.” In fact, iconotropy is commonly the result of the way cultures have dealt with images from foreign or earlier cultures. Numerous accounts from classical antiquity and the Middle Ages detail how cult images were involved in such processes of misinterpretation, both symbolically and materially. Pagan cultures for example deliberately misrepresented ancient ritual icons and incorporated new meanings to the mythical substratum, thus modifying the myth’s original meanings and bringing about a profound change to existing religious paradigms. Iconotropy is a fundamental concept in religious history, particularly of contexts in which religious changes, often turbulent, took place. At the same time, the iconotropic process of appropriating cult images brought with it changes in the materiality of those images...The conference hopes to generate new research questions and creative synergies by initiating conversation and the exchange of ideas among scholars in the arts and humanities.

  Révolutions médiévales

  Le BAM, Bulletin des Anglicistes Médiévistes (peer review journal), lance un appel à contributions pour son numéro 93 sur le thème « Révolutions médiévales ». Le terme « revolution » n’apparait pas dans la langue anglaise avant le XIV^e siècle. Le mot est emprunté au français revolucion qui est issu du latin revolvere. En latin médiéval, l’acception de revolutio devient à la fois scientifique et religieuse puisqu’elle renvoie au mouvement des corps célestes ainsi qu’à la transmigration des âmes (ou métempsycose). La première trace du mot « revolution », utilisé pour signifier un brusque changement dans l’ordre social, date de 1450. Pour autant, cet emploi ne devient courant qu’à partir de la fin de XVII^e siècle.

  Following the success of edieval equestrianism sessions at the International medieval congress (IMC) Leeds 2016, we invite papers for special sessions on medieval equestrian history for the IMC at Leeds in 2017. We welcome papers on theoretical and practical aspects of medieval equestrianism, as well as for the special strand of IMC 2017, “Otherness”. We also accept papers using experimental and reconstruction approaches building on profound scholarly research.
