    Material and visual expressions of personal memories (12th-21st centuries)

    The researcher-led Visual and Material History Working Group of the European University Institute in Florence invites you to a one-day conference on the material and visual expressions of individual memories. By encouraging exchanges between different disciplines and scholars researching on the medieval, early modern and modern periods, we hope that this event will foster new questions and perspectives on the fields of historical anthropology, history and art history.

    Orient oder Rom?

    Prehistory, history and reception of a historiographical myth (1880Ð1930)

    Today the question “Orient oder Rom?” is no longer a topical issue in medieval art history, although a persuasive answer has never been formulated. One of the reasons for this oblivion deals with the controversial figure of Josef Strzygowski, who in 1901 published about the question his pivotal volume, nowadays discredited for its racial and proto-nazi judgement.However, the question “Orient oder Rom?” concerns not only with Josef Strzygowski: the prodromes of this critical concepts goes back to the nineteenth century, when the Russian, Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman empires fought to control territories. The conference aims to distance from the sole Strzygowski’s perspective and to comprehend and rewrite the story of a pivotal concept for both art historiography and cultural identity.

    Arthur, la mer et la guerre

    Un colloque européen se tiendra du jeudi 22 au samedi 24 mai 2014 à Boulogne-sur-Mer. Le colloque s’articulera autour des trois grands blocs thématiques et chronologiques : la mer et la guerre à « l'Âge d'Arthur » (300-700) ; la mer et la guerre dans la littérature arthurienne médiévale (1000-1500) ; la mer et la guerre dans la production arthurienne contemporaine (XIXe-XXIe siècle). Il permettra de confronter les travaux d’archéologues, d’historiens, de philologues, d’historiens de l’art, de spécialistes de littérature anglaise et française, médiévale autant que contemporaine, ainsi que de spécialistes du cinéma ou de la bande dessinée.
