    Pluralizing Hospital Histories

Charity, Resilience, and Transformation in the Longue Durée

The interdisciplinary conference examines the socio-economic and cultural conditions for the resilience or vulnerability of historical hospital facilities in urban contexts. By discussing specific case studies, interdisciplinary reflections on lines of development and ruptures in the genesis, practice and reception of pre-modern hospitals will be stimulated. In terms of epoch and space, the selection of papers will be as broad and open as possible. A special temporal focus will be placed on the dynamics of the European-Mediterranean late Middle Ages with their specific framework conditions for the emergence of hospitals.

Asia in the mirror: self-representations, self-narratives, and perception of the other

The 21st century has been defined as the “Asian century”, a new global phase after the European and the American centuries. We invite scholars working in a range of disciplinary fields including literature, linguistics, history, and cultural studies to submit proposals pertaining, but not limited, to the following research questions: What is Asia from a cultural point of view? How has Asia represented itself in its diversity and/or to different cultures? How has Asia represented other cultures? How have other cultures represented Asia? How have contacts between Asia and other cultures shaped the continent? What is the role of postcolonial and decolonial approaches in enhancing our understanding of Asia and its entanglements?

    Mining Mobilities across the globe

Labour, Science, and Knowledge circulation in Mining (15th-21st century)

The fifth conference of the European Labour History Network (ELHN) will explore how mining mobility and knowledge circulation have played a pivotal role in extractive industries worldwide. The movement of workers, technologies, and knowledge has been mediated by state authorities, corporations, and subcontractors through alluring and forced forms of recruitment. Alongside these trajectories, men and women from neighbouring and distant territories moved to newly reopened mines to search for new deposits and improve their social and economic conditions.

A networked urban world: small, medium, and large cities (from the Middle Ages to Contemporary Times)

The interest of urban historiography on small towns has manifested itself, continuously, but not very intensely, since the 1980s, namely through the study of urban hierarchies, the spatial distribution of towns in a region, or city/city relations. Until now, however, the topic of the relationships established between small, medium and large cities, although not omitted, is far from being able to be considered consolidated as a research topic. Mainly, the place that small towns occupy/occupied in large-scale interconnection phenomena and what are the components, modalities, intensity, and relevance of their (eventual) involvement was little questioned.

Logics, stakes and limits of cultural heritage transmission in Eurasia

The thematic issue is about cultural heritage and patrimonialization. It aims at comparing the varying notions of “tradition” and “safeguarding of culture” within an empirical approach. We focus on conflicts about the creation of culture and how these globalised and specific contexts shape a changing self-perception of “ethnic identity” in Northern Asia, Central Asia and Eastern Europe. The articles may be on local as well as global expressions of cultural heritage: poetical genre, engraving or wood carving, architecture, ethno-parks or ecomuseums, cultural tourism, opposition to projects of valorization, etc. Analysis may also focus on the role of actors involved in local projects, on historical contexts or on international fashions.

Before the Anthropocene: Medieval concepts of interdependent human-nature-relations

A global history of free ports

    Capitalism, commerce and geopolotics (1600-1900)

Exactly how free ports arose in early-modern Europe is still subject to debate. Livorno, Genoa and other Italian cities became famous as major examples of a particular way of attracting trade. Between the late eighteenth and the nineteenth century the existence of free ports – as specific fiscal, cultural, political and economic entities with different local functions and characteristics – developed from an Italian and European into a global phenomenon. While a general history of free ports – from their first emergence to the present-day special economic zones – has never been written, this research network aims to pave the way for such an enterprise. The history of free ports research network is organising a number of conferences in the next years, in order to work towards a standard publication and interactive research platform for the history of free ports from the XVIth to the early XXth century.

    The Saints of Rome

Diffusion and reception from Late Antiquity to the Early Modern Period

The saints of Rome have always been among the most venerated and the most popular heavenly patrons in Christendom, grafting the noble air of universality and integration onto emerging Christian cultures. From the apostles and Early Christian martyrs through the Early Modern period and beyond, the textual and material  dissemination of Roman saints made a significant impact on the rise of the cult of the saints. Post-Tridentine Roman cults spread by the Society of Jesus and  the revival of catacomb cults  brought a new  wave in the world-wide  cult of the saints of Rome in the early modern period.

The author – Wanted, dead or alive

New perspectives on the concept of authorship, 1700-1900

The goal of this conference is to reassess, challenge, and enlarge the concept of authorship, by giving the author a post-mortem of sorts. To do this, we want to bring together fresh and critical historiographical perspectives on the concept of authorship, and challenge participants to think in comparative and transnational frameworks. Ideally, we seek to draw together work from a wide variety of sub-disciplines, creating a dialogue which connects often-separated fields such as book history and literary history.

    Circulation and Scientific Institutions

The Americas, Western Europe, South Asia (1750s-1914)

While historians should take into account the movements in space that constantly transform sciences, they should not lose sight of the specific locations dedicated to the daily work of scientists. In scientific facilities (museums, laboratories, hospitals, etc.), modern scientists use their research instruments, meet with members of their networks, teach, and interact with various actors from outside of their scientific community. Participants in this symposium will seek how to write the history of this dynamic between circulation and institutions of science.
