Ce colloque porte sur les « néo-péplums », un genre cinématographique apparu au début des années 2000, pour interroger la manière dont ils contribuent à réinventer les imaginaires collectifs de l'Antiquité. Ouvert à toutes les disciplines, ce colloque interrogera également l'influence jouée par ces représentations filmiques et sérielles sur d'autres médias et d'autres imaginaires historiques.

On the Roads of Arabia: Itineraries by Land and Sea
From the Bronze Age to the Islamic Period
The aim of the symposium is to study the overland and maritime routes of the Arabian Peninsula and the exchanges they made possible, through archaeology, history, philology, religion and life sciences. This topic will be addressed in the longue durée, from the Bronze Age to the Islamic period. The symposium will also examine the networks of exchanges with border regions such as the Indian subcontinent, the Horn of Africa and Egypt, as well as the empires of the Ancient Near East, and the Greek and Roman empires.

Jocelyne Saab, reporter, cinéaste, au service de l’histoire
Ces deux journées d’études seront consacrées à l’œuvre de la cinéaste libanaise Jocelyne Saab (1948-2019), de ses premiers documentaires à ses dernières œuvres de photographe. Elles ont pour ambition d’investiguer plusieurs thèmes marquants qui traversent le travail de Saab, parmi lesquels les rapports entre histoire, mémoire et engagement, la question des archives et de leur portée testimoniale et politique, l’élaboration d’une poétique de l’exil, qui mettra notamment en rapport les médiums cinématographiques et littéraires, mais également plastiques, relativement à l’influence de son œuvre sur les artistes contemporains libanais de l’après-guerre.

Call for papers - Prehistory and Antiquity
L’intellectuel, le savant et l’expert : réalité antique ou construction moderne ?
Cet appel à communications invite les jeunes chercheurs à réfléchir à la place des intellectuels, savants et experts dans l’Antiquité. Il s'agira de questionner les acceptions données par les historiens à des réalités anciennes, et notamment d'identifier les acteurs de ce groupe, selon des dénominations choisies par eux-mêmes ou non. Se posera aussi la question de l'élaboration du savoir et de l'expertise, à l'échelle individuelle comme collective, ainsi que sa réception, notamment par le pouvoir. Enfin, il s'agira également de questionner le concept de « lieu de savoir » et de chercher à comprendre comment les anciens pensaient les espaces, privés comme public, dans l'élaboration de la pensée et du savoir. L’enjeu est de se saisir de l’originalité antique du travail intellectuel, de l’élaboration d’idées et de pensées, ou plus largement d’œuvres, et d’établir d’après quels standards cette expérience a été rendue possible dans une Antiquité qui ne soit pas restreinte à la « civilisation gréco-romaine », mais intégratrice de l’espace oriental.

Suivant la tradition de l’anthropologie historique, nous proposons aux doctorant·e·s et post-doctorant·e·s travaillant sur les mondes anciens de réfléchir collectivement autour du thème : « Interagir dans les sociétés anciennes ». Si le verbe « interagir » est particulièrement employé aujourd’hui dans des sociétés humaines de plus en plus connectées, il l’est d’autant plus depuis la révolution technologique et numérique née durant le XXe siècle.

This first edition of the YSCH online seminar aims to stimulate a discussion that, relying on the most recent studies, can contribute to specifying the definition of the concept of “Late Antiquity” for the Balkan Peninsula.

Revue Volumen
Volumen est une revue de vulgarisation scientifique éditée depuis 2008 par l’Association d’étude antique néo-louvaniste (ASBL) Roma. Publiée en français, au rythme d’une fois par an, la revue internationale souhaite favoriser la diffusion des travaux qui traitent de manière novatrice des civilisations antiques et de leurs rapports. Volumen s’adresse à un public diversifié, composé de spécialistes et de non spécialistes ; pour cela, les articles doivent être rédigés dans une langue à la fois précise et soignée mais accessible aux lecteurs non spécialisés. Le prochain numéro de la revue annuelle Volumen sera consacré aux jeux, jouets et sports durant l’Antiquité. Une section « Varia » complètera ce numéro.

Créations artistiques arabes ou réinvention du concept de l’engagement
Les artistes arabes, dont la réception de leur œuvre est souvent réduite à tort à une interprétation politique et à la lutte contre les oppressions politico-sociales, ont toujours osé et osent encore déconstruire le concept d’engagement, ne s’intéressant pas seulement à des sujets strictement arabes ni à des thématiques exclusivement politiques et collectives mais proposant des œuvres innovantes, tantôt plus intimes et subjectives, tantôt plus universelles sur des sujets concernant l’humanité entière et reflétant des enjeux sociétaux ou citoyens mondiaux, comme les défis environnementaux et la gestion des ressources naturelles, les pandémies, les concepts philosophiques, politiques et esthétiques, les enjeux et objectifs de la culture, la mise en question de la (post-)modernité, et toutes les questions qui animent le monde. Ainsi, les œuvres engagées visent-elles à la fois la reconnaissance d’une valeur esthétique d’une part et la dénonciation d’une situation, la critique d’une opinion ou la défense d’une cause, dans le contexte de revendication de la liberté d’expression, d’autre part.

Spatial Perception in Antiquity from the Eastern Mediterranean to the Taklamakan Desert
Spatial perception in antiquity is a fruitful and intriguing research area that has already received attention since the late 18th century. The development of separate disciplines dealing with different cultures and sources has, however, led to an often-isolated treatment of such topics in the specific fields of history, philology and (historical) linguistics. This conference intends to provide the opportunity to overcome such isolated treatment and to strengthen the cooperation between the fields by establishing interdisciplinary discussions.

Animals in Greek, Arabic, and Latin Philosophy
Under the aegis of the European Research Council (ERC) funded project “Animals in Philosophy of the Islamic World,” a conference will be held at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU) Munich, on the topic of Animals in Greek, Arabic, and Latin Philosophy. We welcome proposals for papers on any topic relevant to animals and philosophy in ancient Greek and Roman and medieval (Byzantine, Islamic, or Latin Christian) philosophy. Relevant topics could include, but are not limited to, Aristotelian zoology and its reception, theories of animal soul and cognition, views on how animals should be treated, and ideas about animals in medicine and other sciences.

From the disconnected letters to the science of letters: a meeting of knowledges in the Middle East
In order to interpret the disconnected letters of the Qur’an (ḥurūf muqaṭṭa‘a), Muslim thinkers have based their work on esoteric concepts, sometimes handed down from Antiquity, which have flourished in Islamic lands under the name of the science of letters (‘ilm al-ḥurūf). This international symposium aims to study the various representations of the mysterious letters within the wider framework of the science of letters, and to put them in perspective against similar readings from languages and cultures close to Arabic. Part of the symposium will be held in the historic citadel of Erbil in the heart of ancient Mesopotamia, “the land of the two rivers”, the cradle of early writing.

In-betweenness: in search of intermediaries
After more than a century of research, the humanities have developed increasingly refined concepts and tools to identify the characteristics of cultural exchange. Since the creation of the diffusionist paradigm, which often tried to study the circulation of cultural objects without specifically identifying the actors, numerous works have made it possible to dissect the transfer processes and the individuals involved. Concepts and tools inherited from anthropology and ethnology such as acculturation, cultural transfers, métissage, middle ground or hybridization have attempted to account for the phenomena resulting from intercultural exchanges. However, only more recently has attention been paid to intermediaries and their role in the various processes.

From Plato to Saint Augustine to Freud, the pairing Eros / Thanatos occupies a place that is both central and multi-faceted in Western thought and art. It appears as a celebration of love as a vital energy that allows the (male) soul to escape its mortal body and reach the divine, but also as a threat when under the effect of carnal desire, or of feminine, maternal power, the soul is exhausted. This is also the case in Asian thought and art, whether in popular beliefs and images, religious icons, classical, traditional or contemporary representations.

The junior researchers and PhD students from the Anthropology of the ancient world curriculum of the PhD course in Classics and Archeology are promoting the fourth edition of the seminar cycle Classicamente. Dialoghi Senesi sul Mondo Antico. This year's edition will focus on the varied methodologies and hermeneutical perspectives which represent the scientific guidelines followed by scholars in anthropology of the ancient world ever since its development. It will also focus on those approaches that today contribute to a constant enrichment and renovation of this field of study. Our goal is to offer to all those who take part the chance to present their work, be it the result of long research or elements of a work in progress, in an enviroment open to discussion between different perspectives (anthropological, philological, historical, archeological, semiotic etc.).
