  Why did Yugoslavs decide to resist? A comparison with France and Germany In the framework of the project “Wer ist Walter? Resistance against Nazism in Europe” we are organising this online event which will deal with the reasons and motivations for resistance against occupation and collaboration in Yugoslavia, especially in the “Independent State of Croatia”, during World War 2, followed by a discussion to what extent the context and the reasons for resistance were different and/or similar in France and in Germany.

  Agency and action in Czech, Slovak, Hungarian and Polish émigré communities during the Cold War

  This special webinar celebrates the launch of the project’s public heritage exhibition atkadocheritage.be. This online exhibition contains a selection of contributions produced by the project’s partners, outlining a wealth of civil society mobilizations by Central and Eastern European migrants in the Low Countries during the period 1933-1989. The exhibition’s purpose is to emphasize the potential that forgotten stories like these can play in curating the heritage, commemorating, and documenting the histories of the unique circumstances that these Central European émigré communities faced, living in Belgium and the Netherlands, during this tumultuous period of modern history.

  Betting on the farm

  Institutional change in Japanese agriculture

  Japan Agricultural Cooperatives (JA), a nationwide network of farm cooperatives, is under increasing pressure to expand farmer incomes by adapting coop strategies to changing market incentives. Some coops have adapted more successfully than others. In Betting on the Farm, Patricia L. Maclachlan and Kay Shimizu attribute these differences to three sets of local variables: resource endowments and product-specific market conditions, coop leadership, and the organization of farmer-members behind new coop strategies.

  DARIAH Day

  DARIAH Day is a one day workshop intended to introduce the Digital Research Infrastructure for the Arts and Humanities (DARIAH) to the linguistic community in Zurich.   Teaching Gender. Theory and society in the classroom

  Now more than ever, gender as an analytical concept is being heavily contested from diverse quarters inside as well as outside academia. The panel discussion addresses key questions of how to teach gender as  critical theory in the light of current societal and political tensions on the one hand and institutional constraints inside the university on the other hand. How can we teach “critique”? What does teaching gender mean in terms of methods and topics? And how can we engage in critical research and teaching while responding to societal expectations as to relevant output and knowledge transfer?

  Edith Wharton and the Great War in France

  The talk is about Edith Wharton's commitment to Paris and to France from 1914 to 1918. A wealthy and famous expatriate American novelist, who had been living mainly in Paris since 1907, she used her fame, money, writing and influence in the service of France and dedicated her considerable energies (Henry James called her the great "generalissima") to persuading her American countrymen to enter the war.  In the anniversary year of the outbreak of the First World War, Edith Wharton's role in war-time Franco-American relations makes a dramatic story, well worth reconsidering.

This Summer Academy offers early-career scholars an opportunity to follow up on the debates about modernity, its preconditions and its aftermath by focusing on the multifarious processes in which societies outside Europe have adopted, translated, rejected or produced the global, the modern and tradition since the seventeenth century. It places a specific focus on the notions of subjectivity and objectivity as discursive practices which are intrinsically linked to each other.

  AfrikPlay – Filmes à Conversa | Chat and a movie is a new project presenting films focused in contemporary Africa, organized by CRIA (Network Centre for Anthropology Research) | ISCTE-IUL and Center of African Studies (CEA-IUL) | ISCTE-IUL. Being a ‘work in progress’, aims to bring cinema to the university, opening space for debate and reflection around films that present a innovative look on Africa.The growth of cinematographic productions about Africa has highlighted a number of films that set themselves apart from classical documentary concepts, either in their subjects of interest and chosen aesthetic language, approaching other artistic fields and merging reality with fiction. Some questions arouse our interest: what is the relationship between ‘yesterday’s images and the ones these new generations choose to see in Africa? How these fresh revelations defy our understanding of such a vast and complex continent?
