The Pius XII Archives and the Jews

First Notes and Research Hypotheses

This panel features scholars of Catholic-Jewish history who will share their initial research findings about the documents concerning Jews carried out in these newly-opened Vatican archives, with a focus both on the role of the Catholic Church in the Holocaust and also on the Holy See's attitude toward the establishment of the State of Israel. Each panelist will share some of their research from the archives, and will be in dialogue with one another about their findings, and then will address questions from the audience.

What is an egalitarian city?

In this roundtable, professors Jonathan Wolff (University of Oxford) and Avner de-Shalit (Hebrew University of Jerusalem) will discuss their work in progress, focused on the topic of urban injustices. Employing a methodological approach merging normative expertise with applied reflections, supported by data from interviews with over 180 people worldwide, Wolff and de-Shalit set out to conceptualize a city in which individuals relate to each other as equals.

Call for good practices on caring communities

The AGORAge project team is a european pilot project on citizen science funded by COESO project. We are collecting a list of good practices to be included in the AGORAge Caring Community Toolkit addressed to all those interested in implementing initiatives that enable the creation of caring communities in which the social inclusion of older people is given special consideration. The toolkit will be published into four languages: English, Italian, Spanish, and Catalan, and will be freely available from June 2023.

Occupation Studies Research Network - Call for members

A new interdisciplinary online Occupation Studies Research Network which aims to promote the exchange of ideas and encourage a more systematic, comprehensive and conceptual understanding of the subject, was launched on 1 September 2021. The Network now has over fifty members. Doctoral students, postdoc and early career academics and staff at universities, other higher education institutes, museums and archives, who are either actively researching or have recently completed work on some aspect of the subject at PhD level or above are welcome to join the Network and are invited to contribute to the blog.

DARIAH-EU is calling for applications for one vacant "Virtual Competence Centre" head position: VCC3 - Scholarly Content Management. The main task of a VCC head is to work closely with DARIAH Working Groups. The topic of the workshop will be "Building Multilingual Theasauri" and will focus on the presentation of the greek web tool THEMAS (Thesaurus Management System), which was developed within the framework of DARIAH-Gr project. The workshop is intended for the humanistic scientific community and for GLAM institutions (archives, libraries, museums) to wich theasauri are necessary not only for the organization of knowledge and information in general but are also an important factor in ensuring the sustainability of e-infrastructures.

Around the world in a TextGrid day

Edit, manage, publish and explore your TEI data with TextGrid and DARIAH-DE

The workshop will explore two infrastructures, TextGrid and DARIAH-DE, at work, focusing on modeling a “prototype” digital edition starting with a plain text, finishing with a TEI-based online publication. Workshop participants will explore the diversity of the digital research environment TextGrid as well as tools and services of the research infrastructure DARIAH-DE and its possibilities for digital analysis. An introduction on both infrastructures, illustrated by examples from various user scenarios, will be followed by a hands-on session focusing on editing and modelling TEI data, particularly of digital editions, to their publication and exploration. Following these steps, participants will be able to explore the different tools and services to generate, model and publish XML/TEI data guided by TextGrid and DARIAH staff members in small groups according to their own interests and needs. The aim is to create a small digital edition starting with a facsimile and a transcription, enriching data with extended mark-up such as geospatial encoding, and publishing into both the TextGrid Repository and a SADE instance (web portal). The workshop is organized by the German DARIAH member DARIAH-DE.

Demystifying Digitisation – A Hands-On Master Class in Text Digitisation

Antwerp Summer Academy in Digital Humanities organized by Digital Humanities Flanders (DHuF) and DARIAH-BE

The core of the our programme exists of two half-day workshops on software packages that may help the researcher automate some aspects of the transcription process. The first will deal with ABBYY, still one of the best software packages around for OCRing digitised print materials. Focusing on the software’s possible advantages and pitfalls, this workshop will show the participants how to prepare their documents in order to achieve the best OCR (optical character recognition) results. The second workshop will introduce Transkribus, a software package that has recently made great advancements in optically recognising characters in handwritten materials.

Edith Wharton and the Great War in France

The talk is about Edith Wharton's commitment to Paris and to France from 1914 to 1918. A wealthy and famous expatriate American novelist, who had been living mainly in Paris since 1907, she used her fame, money, writing and influence in the service of France and dedicated her considerable energies (Henry James called her the great "generalissima") to persuading her American countrymen to enter the war. In the anniversary year of the outbreak of the First World War, Edith Wharton's role in war-time Franco-American relations makes a dramatic story, well worth reconsidering.
